In this interview with Elise, we discuss her experience as she takes her work to her first few craft shows, starting a business, and feeling into the risks and benefits of each decision. In this impromptu interview with Tammy, we give you a glimpse of what it’s like inside an art mentoring session. Tammy is spending three months with me working intensively to create and debut a new body of work in her own style. I have a program called the Visual Artist Accelerator and the curriculum learning arc helps an artist own their voice, make a ton of new work, and debut it - and we meet weekly (virtually, typically) and also correspond twice a week apart from the mentoring sessions so artists get a ton of support and accountability while completing the program. I also make up assignments on the spot to assist in the goal and vision of each artist; for example in this session Tammy came with a vision of painting a wave so we spent her time figuring out an approach to this that will work for her.

In this solo episode, I’m celebrating this first art show I’ve had since becoming a parent. Considering that my daughter turned 4 the week of this episode, this feels triumphant. I’m so appreciative of this opportunity to show a new body of work! This collection of new paintings was made possible in part by a grant from The Regional Arts and Culture Council and I’m so happy to see all 33 paintings up! I hope this artwork finds a connection with people as they see it and goes on to do its work in the world - it certainly healed me as I made it and I hope that it can help us all feel a little more alive.

In this solo episode, I share some of the ups and downs from my artist’s life, including finishing the 100-day painting challenge that I began January 1st. And installing these paintings on Sunday at Providence Portland Medical Center, in the gallery space between the main hospital and the cancer center gallery in a space that is curated by Portland artist Seth Nehill. But also about how painting with my daughter makes for more interesting work (in addition to being blissful and exponentially messier for my workspace). I also share that I had a rejection today that stings, a gig I’d been planning on and got my hopes up about and I share that I had to decline a project I’d really love to have done because I have standard rates and can’t take on work that doesn’t meet my minimum rates. And lastly an update on Art Friend School!
