In this interview with Charmi, we learn about her journey from attending art school in India, moving to Houston and then stopping her art practice for awhile. She was able to embrace art again when she saw examples of self-represented artists like Jessica Swift, and many more, selling art and teaching. We talk about how that helped illuminate a path forward for her as an artist. Charmi has been painting and showing her work in the Seattle area, teaching art to kids for many years; she is now also offering workshops for adults.

In this interview with Liana, we discuss a new and exciting subject in her work: abstract botanicals! Inspired by a day when she didn’t see a view she liked, but captivated by a stunning pink quince blossom, Liana began making these new works and is developing a new series. In our conversation, we discuss a few of the things that come to mind when an artist like Liana is well-known for one thing (landscapes) and begins to explore a new subject (abstract botanicals).

In this solo episode, I experiment with an idea of processing the news in the form of a collage and including it as a feature in my email newsletters. This lets me just follow my curiosity, cutting apart newspapers, and allowing an idea to take shape. It feels really satisfying to have gotten an idea and to have given it a chance to make art and it was actually pretty awesome and therapeutic to read the news in this way.

In this solo episode, I’m hanging out inside one of my favorite spots to draw and people watch. It’s a tea house inside an old caboose called Tea Chai Te. It’s a great way to have a pot of tea and some drawing time. I love to sit in the top section and watch how people move, it’s a great way to practice gestural drawing!
