On our Political Analysis, we look at the issue of the possibility to introduce new laws in order to regulate coalition governments in local municipalities. The African National Congress (ANC) is considering such a legislation to manage coalition governments. The matter has been up for discussion at the party's national executive committee (NEC) meeting taking place in Boksburg at the weekend. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has also tabled the same issue of legislation to try and stabilise coalition governments in South Africa through a new regulatory framework.
It seems coalition governments lack a concrete framework to determine how coalitions should operate; as a result, power disputes across the country have taken central stage in local government. The government, through the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), is also planning to have a new system of governing coalitions by the next term of local government elections in 2026. To understand whether this is necessary and will benefit the masses or the political party were joined by Pranish Desai, Researcher and data analyst at Good Governance Africa.
