President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the controversial Electoral Amendment Bill into law, which now allows independent candidates to stand in provincial and national elections. The bill was passed by the National Assembly in February after a Constitutional Court order to amend the law was handed down in June 2020. In a bid to prevent a potential governing ANC-EFF coalition in next year's national election, DA leader John Steenhuisen has proposed a "moonshot pact" with opposition parties. Five political party leaders have already agreed to attend the Moonshot Pact National Convention. Steenhuisen urged other opposition leaders to unite and work together towards the shared goal of unseating the ANC.
