This week we sit down with longtime friend Derryl Yeager, founder and artistic director of Odyssey Dance Theatre.
We’ve known Derryl for years, but this conversation gave us the chance to really hear the full story of how his life and career unfolded.
And it’s incredibly inspiring.
Derryl grew up in Texas playing sports before discovering dance as a teenager. That decision set him on a path that eventually took him from Ballet West in Salt Lake City to Broadway, where one unexpected moment changed the trajectory of his life.
After missing an audition for A Chorus Line, Derryl decided to take matters into his own hands. A cold call to a casting director and a chance encounter at a theater led to an unexpected audition in front of Broadway legend Michael Bennett.
He walked away with a contract.
Throughout this conversation Derryl shares powerful insight about what it really takes to succeed in the arts and in life.
His biggest advice for young dancers and performers:
Train. Train. Train.
Learn multiple styles.
Become versatile.
Prepare yourself so when opportunity appears, you stand out.
He also talks about the powerful connection between live performers and an audience, why theater still matters, and how Odyssey Dance Theatre has built a culture where dancers continue to grow and improve.
If you’re looking for a conversation about discipline, passion, and taking control of your own path, this episode is worth the listen.
Derryl and Odyssey Dance Theatre have been entertaining audiences for over 30 years.
Their upcoming spring shows include:
Chicago Nights
Romeo & Juliet: One Funky Tale
