I offered my colleagues, Richard and John, what seems like the perfect job opportunity: I would pay for everything they need, their food, their clothing, even an apartment. But they would have to work for 24 hours, 7 days week. And no additional pay. I would pay them indirectly by taking care of everything they need.
These men turned this job down.
Yet at least 40 million women in Nigeria do this job every day. Maybe even closer to 70 million. These are the real housewives. Majority of them do not earn a living from managing their homes. They’ve been told that it is their duty to do this work. Yes, the man will provide everything she needs, everything the house needs, everything the children need, but she won’t get paid. She has no money that she can call her own. No ability to make choices that do not require her husband’s permission.
