  • Button It - Talking to the Ladies of Buttonmania

Fresh out of lockdown, the Bayside Bubble is back.

This week we are joined by Denise, Edwina and Jean, from our new favourite store, Buttonmania. If you are unfamiliar with the business, Buttonmania can be found in Highett and has the most beautiful assortment of low to high-end vintage buttons and buckles.

A family owned business, Denise and her daughters sit down with us to talk about what they do, the surprising impact of lockdown, and (arguably the biggest draw to the store) their young puppy, Leon.

We discuss this niche trade that has led to orders from overseas, for television shows and by designers. We can’t help but to request some of our own.

Denise, Edwina and Jean share the heartwarming story of how a joking comment about buying the business turned into a family passion project.

We can’t thank the ladies enough for taking time away from the sewing machines and their thriving business to talk with us in the studio. See the collection of buttons and belt designs on their instagram page, buttonmanic.

As always thank you to our sponsons, Buxton Real Estate and Chisholm Constructions, who help us continue to make the content we love.

Say hi on our Facebook and Instagram pages and come back next week for some more Bayside Banter!

  • Bayside Banter - Off Yer Bike Part 2

In part two of the Bayside Banter bike accident story we pick up where we left off, in the back of an ambulance off to the emergency department at Sandringham Hospital.

Maree discusses her tactics for talking her way into family-only access to accompany Kate through the hospital, and we relive the hardest and most painful moment for both.

We laugh about the characters we meet along the way and express our gratitude to the Sandy Hospital staff members including super nurse Sue, and orthopaedic surgeon wiz, Wesley, that were fantastic throughout the very long and exhausting weekend.

Thank you again for all the support the community has shown us at this time. We will now return to normal programming with an exciting interview for you next week on the Bayside Bubble.

  • Be Involved - with Gary Nash from the Hampton Rovers

Welcome back to the Bayside Bubble.

Today we are joined by Gary Nash or ‘Nashie’ as he’s fondly known at the Hampton Rovers Football Club. Nashie has a 40 year history of involvement with the club as a premiership player, boundary umpire, coach, runner, and President.

Now a life member of the club, we sit down and ask him to reflect on his greatest club and sporting achievements over the years.

We are lucky to catch him in the season that marks the 50 year anniversary of Nashie’s premiership win and hear about the reunion in the works and the process of tracking down players. If you know of a Ross Collins, Allen Arthurson or Wayne Williamson, then get in touch or pass the message along to let them know about this exiting event!

We discuss the changes over the most recent years to the club including the increasingly strengthened women’s side coming up through the age groups, as well as the activities that were carried out over isolation to maintain participation in club activities.

We look to the future of the Hampton Rovers and discuss the community effort to maintain operations and the volunteers that are so vital to the club.

If you’d like to learn how you can get involved or more about the Hampton Rovers Football club or tune in to their podcast where they interview players and review highlights from recent games, search ‘Roverland Podcast’ wherever you listen to your podcasts or find it on their website.

Thank you as always to our fantastic sponsors, Buxton Real Estate and Chisholm Constructions, that allow us to bring you these episodes of the Bayside Bubble.

  • Bayside Banter - Off Yer Bike Part 1

Settle in and ready yourself for the fully story of Kate’s recent bicycle accident that landed our co-host in hospital with a separated shoulder.

In part one of this special Banter episode we relive the inciting incident, the point that Maree was approached by a handsome stranger with the unsettling news, encounters with some very helpful, and one not-so-helpful members of the public, as well as Kate’s interesting first ‘green whistle’ experience.

Kate and Maree reflect on the compassion of the community and appreciate everyone’s well wishes during this time.

Next week we return for another Bayside Bubble with guest, Gary Nash from the Hampton Rovers Football Club, and in two weeks time we will recall Kate and Maree’s experience at Sandringham Hospital.

  • Investing in the Community - in conversation with Matthew Gallop

On today’s episode we sit straighter in our chairs for a discussion with bank manager, Matthew Gallop, from the Community Bendigo Bank in Sandringham. We are introduced to community banking and how this model works to funnel 80% of profits back into the local area to sponsor and fund beneficial community projects.

We ask Matthew to recall his craziest experiences working at a bank and hear about arguments between coworkers about who should be wielding a weapon, cars through front windows, and an a metro train entering through the back wall.

We hear about how a community bank values its staff and customers, Matthew picking and building a team of staff that have a high regard for customer experience and an emphasis on a positive mindset.

We discuss the spending and money handling habits that have changed since Covid-19, shifting increasingly to cashless payments and the beneficial repercussions of this.

If you would like to learn more about Matthew and the team at Sandringham Community Bank, or information around sponsorships you can find it here https://www.bendigobank.com.au/branch/vic/community-bank-sandringham/.

  • The Conjurer at the Card Table - in conversation wtih Josh Staley

We are joined by one of our own today on a special episode of the Bayside Bubble with social media manager, Josh Stanley to enlighten us about his other career working as a professional magician.

We learn about his twelve year (and counting) professional experience performing this art, admiring his most recent stint of performances for the Melbourne Comedy Festival and Adelaide Fringe Festival.

Josh explains how his passion for magic and performance has evolved and been influenced throughout his growth as a magician, in which we learn about the ‘restricted section’ that only the trusted few are permitted access to in magic stores.

Josh takes us through the process of handling difficult audience members (Kate and Maree for starters) and reacting to stressful situations in which things go wrong, as well as exploring what it takes to make a career in magic happen, including the writing, producing and acting that is required along with the skill for performing the magic itself.

We learn that the magic performing community is an immensely supportive and creative one that organises conventions and competitions aimed at promoting youth participation.

This was a particularly fun episode to make thanks to our wonderful guest. If you would like to learn more about Josh or enquire about working with him, you can get in touch via his website.  http://www.joshstaley.com/#

  • The Colonel's Son - in Conversation with Rishi Chawdhury

On today’s episode we are joined by the owner of one of our favourite coffee spots, Colonel Son. Rishi Chawdhury has run the business with the help of his wife since taking it over in 2014 and has become a prominent face in the community.

We hear about the journey Rishi undertook from studying pharmacy in a Western city of India, to the business owner in Bayside that he is today.

Rishi retells the happy story of how he and his wife met through an arranged marriage and we discuss the difficult circumstances that have geographically separated his family due to worldwide covid restrictions.

We discuss the decision Rishi made to remain open for takeaways over lockdown last year and the rare opportunity that it served the community to leave the house and experience some form of human interaction.

Colonel Son is situated on Beach Road near the round about in Black Rock. If it isn’t already obvious, we highly recommend it for its coffee, food and the vibe (as Maree would put it).
