I don’t consider myself the most talented artist, but I absolutely enjoy all things creative. It’s about how I feel during the activity, not about the “success” or outcome of whatever I’m working on.

Feelings.

I feel connected with anyone who has lived through loss…. But some people are extra special, instant connections.

Today’s guest on The Be Ruthless Show is not just a Faces of Grief Author. Dan Older is a man on a mission. He’s passionate. He wears his heart on his sleeve. And he puts his complete all into everything he does.

Dan works as a professional portation provider for people with nonmedical needs. In this capacity, he ushers people to and from their appointments with compassion and grace. In his down time, he is part of a hot-air balloon crew and enjoys the unique hobby of ghost hunting with his wife and friends.

In 2019, Dan's life changed when his only brother, Brad, died from a massive heart attack. Dan immediately started writing poetry to help process his thoughts and joined a support community that helped him see he wasn't alone.Five years into his healing journey, he now leads a “Write Your Soul" meeting that encourages others to express themselves through writing.

My dad used to say “let me see your eyes” when I wasn’t feeling well. Dead giveaway. I’m not the kid who got a fever. Ever!

He also could tell when I was “faking fine.” You know - when I knew I was sick but still wanted to do something.

One look. That’s all it ever took.

I’m not the best at evaluating that look myself, and I’m absolutely prone to adult faking fine….. doing something when I should be resting!

The world doesn’t discuss grief, so how can we expect work places to address grief?

It’s necessary, because people will inevitably deal with loss. And then they’ll return to the work place.

Where everything is exactly the same - except for them!

Today’s guest on The Be Ruthless Show is all too familiar with loss and loss in the workplace.

Dr. Kimberly Harms has been around the block in life. She has served as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service, a dental school professor, a grief counselor, a death doula, a civil mediator, a clinical dentist with her late husband Jim in Farmington MN, a school board Chair, President of an international women's organization, the first woman President of the Minnesota Dental Association, a National Spokesperson for the American Dental Association (21 years), an award-winning, best selling author and international speaker on the topics of grief, conflict and legacy planning. She has also suffered many personal losses, including the deaths by suicide of her mother and son and the death by broken heart of her husband after their son's death. Her most important role now is mother to her two surviving children and grandmother to 6 precious grandchildren.

I’ve even been neglecting myself because I’ve been so preoccupied with her.
