The inauguration found the Capitol Building in Washington DC in stark contrast to the scenes of January 6. ready to hear the swearing-in of a new President and Vice President. Ken welcomes back his friend John Williams, the Director of the Center for Racial Reconciliation. Recorded on January 13, after the insurrection and before the inauguration, Ken and John talk about the assault on the Capitol. John's work at the Center has put him in a position to counsel some 200 pastors, most of them white pastors with predominantly white congregations, all of whom are eager to address the issues of race. John is about  to launch a new podcast he calls Disruptive Peacemakers. The Center is also launching a second series of Table Talks. Ken will serve as a facilitator for a second time. The podcast was released just after the inauguration ceremonies - Ken pays tribute to  22 year old Young Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman and her poem,  The Hill We Climb. SHOW NOTES

EPISODE 66 - Ken welcomes retired Chief Editor of Christianity Today (CT), Mark Galli. Mark made headlines in December 2019, just as the House of Representatives voted to impeach the sitting President. In a CT Editorial, Galli and the editorial board called for the removal of Donald Trump by the Senate. As an evangelical coming out against the President, Mark's editorial went viral, hitting headlines all over the world. Ken and Mark go back to his childhood in Northern California, tracking his spiritual, academic, and professional journey. In Beach Talk #16, Ken and Carla find themselves next to a natural gas fire pit on the deck of a decadent house in Newport Beach overlooking the blue Pacific. They review a wonderful/terrible week in the headlines - Presidential conversations with the Georgia Secretary of State, the run-off election that resulted in the Wornach and Ossoff victories, and then the day (Wednesday, January 6, 2021) that will "live in infamy," first on the floor of Congress in joint session to count electoral votes and then the reckless storming of the Capitol building of flag-waving, red hats, toting Bibles in a failed attempt to thwart the will of the people with force. Ken ends the podcast with a reflection on calls for the President to step down - voluntarily or involuntarily - and the role of evangelicals, their scapegoating of Antifa, and their fixation on "the Trump victory," on the day's events.

In this first episode of 2021, Ken introduces his newly released little book, My Creed, on Amazon. It's a book about authentic belief - and takes on the traditional evangelical statement of faith. Ken reviews Season 1 and the 65 episodes he created during the covid crisis - since the podcast launch in March of 2020. A major question addressed for the year by many of his guests is the strange but undeniable devotion of a large majority of white evangelicals to Donald Trump. He reviews many of the theories and scholarship addressing that vexing question - and shows how his little book addresses the theological issues surrounding this phenomenon. He includes a brief reading from Chapter 2. This podcast was recorded on Tuesday, January 5, 2020, the Georgia run-off day for two U.S. Senate seats. The results were unknown. Ken also gives us a glimpse of what's coming for 2021. SHOW NOTES

REPRISE: The Most Downloaded of all (60 episodes) Beached White Male Podcast (Originally aired July 7, 2020) Kristin Kobes Du Mez, Ph.D., has just released her new book: Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation. In two episodes, she discusses her meticulously researched book in which she follows the development of white evangelicalism and the emergence of the religious right from the mid-1900s to the present. She concludes that the white evangelical support for Donald Trump is no surprise - he is the fulfillment of the values embraced by the movement for decades. Here in Part I, Ken also shares a letter he wrote to Republican Senator John Thune, challenging him to break the silence of the Republican stronghold, and hold the President to account.
