  • 653: PUSH UP BRENTFORD PART SIX – MARTIN ALLEN
Martin Allen became manager towards the end of the 2003-4 season and was tasked with saving the club from relegation from the third tier with just nine games to play. After what became known as The Great Escape, the following two seasons saw the club achieve two play-off places, both ending in semi-final defeats. A character on and off the field, Allen still holds a special place in the hearts of many Brentford supporters. In this episode we talk to Martin and some of the fans who came into contact with him. The music was written and performed by Robb Johnson.

Push Up Brentford is an oral history project set up to commemorate the last year the club will play at Griffin Park, their home for 116 years.  We have interviewed fans, young and old, as well as players and managers to uncover their personal stories. We have created a fascinating living history of Brentford Football Club, starring the people who have made it such a special place over the years. The project is run by volunteers, many of them Brentford fans, and supported by Arts and Education charity, digital:works.
The project was funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund and supported by Brentford Football Club. Produced by digital:works. Listen to the full interviews and find out more about the project at www.pushupbrentford.org.uk/

Cooped up for far too long, the Beesotted crew dared to venture out ... setting up their first ever socially distanced podcast in a Park in West London

Billy Grant, Dave Lane, Martin The Dutchman and Matt The Allard quite literally sat around and shot the breeze discussing all sorts ... The season restart. The choc-a-block TV schedule. Division One and Two finishing their Leagues on a points per place basis. Plus loads more

And all this whilst being attacked by a nest of hornets - allegedly planted by Fulham fans slightly nervous for Saturday week - causing the volume levels to be even more erratic than usual.

  • 650: "All Bets Are Off. Automatic Promotion is Back On" - Season Restart Podcast No. 1
The Championship is back. In principal anyway. Clubs up and down the country are getting ready for a season restart on the weekend 19th/20th/21st June.

The Beesotted crew of Billy TheBee Grant. Dave Laney Lane. And Matt The Allard Allard reconvened in The Virtual Joint - with chirpy birds - to discuss the forthcoming matches.

And with a shout from the joint that "All bets were off" and "Teams were just as likely to drop out the Top 6 as they were capable of making the Top 2" due to the incredibly congested fixture list coming up - with a raft of Saturday, Tuesday games on the horizon - there were a plethora of questions that needed to be answered:

Will the season actually start? Or will it be voted down a the Monday 8th meeting?

Will Brentford hold onto that playoff place. Or could they even sneak an automatic spot?

Will home advantage - with no fans - take a hit?

Will teams still be able to travel overnight to away matches?

Will the season open up where it left off - with Brentford playing Fulham at Craven Cottage on the Friday night on TV?

Will any matches be played at neutral venues for fear of fan congregation?

What happens to players who refuse to play past their contract expiry date of June 30th - like Lyle Taylor of Charlton. Are they right to have taken that stance?

Why are QPR and Mark Warburton not happy with the restart date?

    Are we expecting more injuries?

What date can we expect the league to finish and playoff final to be?

How will fans be watching matches seeing as pubs will not be reopened?

Was the FC Midtjylland idea of 2000 cars in the stadium car park watching the game being beamed back on big screens a good idea?

Who are we looking at for promotion ?

Who is the biggest relegation candidates?

What are we going to watch after Ozark?

  • 649: PUSH UP BRENTFORD PART FIVE – SIDELINES & BYLINES
This episode is called ‘Sidelines and Bylines’ and talks to some of the people that have worked in and around the club. Huw Powell served his apprenticeship as a photo journalist with the Surrey Comet before going on to work for several local newspapers from the mid 1980s until 2015. He covered Brentford Football Club over those years, sitting on the touchline come rain or shine, developing friendships with players, and a love for the club. Jim Levack has worked as a journalist covering Brentford Football Club since the 1980s with the Middlesex Chronicle. He has had to report at times when some of the owners in the past did not necessarily have the club’s best interests at heart.  We also talked to two former Brentford players about their time at the club. Alan Hawley played his first game as a professional in 1962 aged just 16. He left 12 years later after playing over 300 games.   Marcus Gayle joined the youth squad aged 14 and played his first game as an 18 year-old in 1988. He moved to play for Wimbledon in the Premiership in 1994 but returned to end his playing career with the Bees under Martin Allen. Marcus has returned to Brentford for a third time and is currently a Club Ambassador. The music was written and performed by Robb Johnson.
