  • TBF 116 Pride Special
With Pride parade just gone past we had to very heavy conversation aroound one simple but very important question.
What would Jesus really do if he walked the earth today, as pertains to those that identify as LGBTQI?
We attempt to be as objective as possible using just the scripture to guide the debate and where there will always be more to add to the conversation, the one thing we definitely were all sure of is that Christ behaviour would be very different from the behaviour of most churches today!
Bobby A was out babe chasing or failing at babe chasing or something along those lines so he was unfortunately not around for the episode however in his absence we were joined by some very lovely young guys, Aiden and Janelle.
Both brought a nice unique to the conversation and we're super thankful for their lending their voices to the episode
Of course we had some dope hookups for you
Starting us off Aiden shouted out Kedine Fairweather's Youtube channel called A walk with him, shot and edited in part by our very own Mo, she addresses life and the bible in a really unique way so give her a shout and telll her Aiden sent you
    Check it out here
    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoYdQ4gDMXTHA6qu3bhYjJQ/featured
Mo suggested some 75p tropical ice creams from Aldi for the lovely summer days.
I shoutted out the Streetlights App which is just an audio version of the bible read over hip hop beats you can find it on spotify here
    https://open.spotify.com/artist/6JrmofdhxBatsnpTA10CHB
Kedine and Janelle also have a prayer request thing on Tuesday where they take prayer requests and pray about it so feel free to slide in their dm's with some prayer requests and if led to do so they'll hit you back with any responses they got form God when they pray for yall.
    Janel's instagram is @_officialjanelle and Kedine's is @mskay_aay

  • TBF 115 Partners, Phones, Passwords and Pin codes
Should your partners have the pin code or password to your phone? And where they don't is it offensive to ask.
Of course it's no surprise Bobby A wasn't the biggest advocate for this but today on the podcast we talk about why and if this really is as big a deal as many make.
We also talk about the unfair double standard seen in the culture where it seems much more acceptable for men to have lower moral standards than women.
We also had a very special guest today our good friend Ade from the On Court Off Court podcast was also down and it was a pleasure to have him on. Definitely check out his podcast available wherever you find ours!
Of course there's the hookups for this week.
Bobby A suggested a book he was currently reading Sex, Jesus and the conversations the Church forgot. The title says it all lol.
    Check it out here http://a.co/74x4dw7
Ade had s a couple of great hookups, the first being the Atheist Delusion on youtube.
    https://youtu.be/ChWiZ3iXWwM
Check out this guy challenging atheists on the existence of God, and on a lighter note, the netflix series Marlon by one of the Wayans brothers, unsurprisingly a funny series you can watch just for the giggles
    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5720168/
Of course we also had to plug the podcast, check out On Court Off Court wherever you find podcasts you can start here,
    https://soundcloud.com/oncourtoffcourt
Peter suggested a Verse, Acts 17:11 about the Berean Jews who would hear a message but also search the scriptures to make sure it was true.
He considers this just a reminder to make sure as christians we're doing at least two things, firstly that we're not reading or hearing about our bibles just once a week at church but also that we are diligently studying our bibles and corroborating the sermons we're hearing at church.
    Acts 17:11
Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. (ESV)

  • TBF 114 To remain in the hearts of those left behind, is to have never left at all!
This past week has been an interesting one but for all the wrong reason.
Rapper XXXtentacion was shot and killed during a robbery earlier this week. The response has been pretty polarising. The rapper's shady past came into play in a big way and today we talked about it and about what our own feelings are regarding such heavy issues such as abuse and domestic violence
We were joined by the elusive Kevin (Jolade), the eloquent Jemz and the lovely little Leia for what was a very difficult conversation about pain, forgiveness, justice and freedom!
The conversation ran a bit longer than expected so we only had one segment this time round and had our hookups at the end.
Speaking of which here are the Hookups
Bobby A suggested watching a movie called McQueen about the life of one of the greatest fashion designers to ever work in fashion.
Check out the trailer for the movie
    https://youtu.be/4OjX3ZbsfbU
Mo had a bit of a tech hookup , he suggested a pair of sony in-ear headphones, the catch being these are under a tenner and sound incredible for the price check it out on amazon here
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00I3LUQPW/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_jt7lBbR76XHFF
Jolade suggested checking out Dr Dre and Jimmy Lovine's documentary on Netflix called the Defiant ones
It's the story of their rise and careers in hip hop and makes for a very informative watch
    https://www.netflix.com/title/80214552
Jemz hooked up all the black women with a hookup called Black girls book club who hold events all over the country talking about books and things they learn form them.
    http://blackgirlbookclub.co/
And Pete's hookup was a brand new first of it's kind Dance E-book called Ruth by one of his favourite dance couples Keone and Mari Madrid. You have to check it out!
    Check out chapter one here
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xuTKoiB0-4
Pete also had another hookup in the form of an artist, recently featured in the Bet experience called Tobe Nwigwe He's an incredible lyricist and has a message that is absolutely worth listening to. Check out some of his videos

  • TBF 113 A Tale of Two Babes
Guess who came up with this week's episode title?
    Easy right?
Of course it was the one and only beautiful Black beast of the Furnace, Bobby A that has tales of the babes
This time it was a bit more serious and Bobby a wanted some thoughts on how to deal with some of his interactions with two particular babes over the past couple weeks.
I won't disclose too much here but Bobby would definitely appreciate your advice so do drop a comment when you listen.
Oh and just a friendly warning, Mo meows at the end of the podcast.... yeah.
    For our Hookups this week.
Peter suggested a fictional podcast called the Bright sessions. IT's essentially recordings of Psychologist Dr Bright's sessions with patients with super human abilities.
It's written really well and is very immersive so give a try.
    http://www.thebrightsessions.com/
Bobby A suggested checking out a movie called Memento about a man who after witnessing the rape and murder of his wife can't create ne wmemories and is on a mission to avenge his wive's murder
Here's the IMDb cover of the movie
    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209144/?ref_=ttpl_pl_tt
Mo had a , in his words, doozie of a hookup. It was an interview of John Piper discussing some issues with some lyrics of some very popular worship songs.
It's definitely worth listening to as it provides a unique view on the words we use during worship.

  • TBF 112 The Furnace on Spiritual Gifts
I think a necessary aspect of the Christian walk should be interactions with the Holy Spirit.
It can't be co-incidence that Christ saw fit to leave that the Spirit should come and be with us wherever , whenever, affording us to walk like Liverpool fans ie Never walk alone (I'm not even a soccer fan but boy have I been waiting to use that one!)
Anyway Bobby A did a questionnaire that helped identify his spiritual gifts and we talked about that, what we think ours are and how they are to be used in church.
You can access the test at the following link
    http://www.bethanyonline.net/media/WagnerModifiedHoutsQuestionnaire.pdf
regardless of your position in church I think this would be a great way to help you identify some areas you might be able to help out at your local church!
    HookUps
Peter's hookup was an animated move called The boy and The beast, it was the last time Peter remembers crying and is an incredible story told with an incredible animation style
It's currently available on Amazon Prime Video but here's a trailer for you to check out
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uifJLWoWv8c
Bobby A had a culinary hookup; after recently visiting this restaurant he recommends checked out The Diner for it's great value for money and even greater food!
    http://goodlifediner.com/
Mo had another obscure hook up this time and it quite simply was for you guys to be intentional in consuming content and art in the manner in which it was intended to be consumed.
    Try it out!

  • TBF 111 Drake's Dark Days
It's no secret that one of hip hop's biggest artists is on the losing side of a "beef" this week, and with all of us in the furnace being avid fans of the genre we had to talk about it.
Does a culture that celebrates division and insulting each other need to change, or is it all just healthy competition.
Side note, if you meet someone on tinder and go out for a real date should you presume they have all their arms or is that something they should inform you of before hand?
We get into that after the hookups!!
    Speaking of which;
Bobby A recommended watching a conversation between J.Cole and Lil Pump
    Check that out here
    https://youtu.be/RNlQU-7y9Fo
Pete shouted out a new Ep from Black Thought of the roots, he feels it highlights what he thinks rap should all be about, well crafted, skillful, intelligent BARS
And Mo recommended Lecrae's latest project with Zaytoven Get Back Right from the Mixtape Let the Trap Say Amen
    check the track out here
    https://youtu.be/9x2TWHEimIQ
Since we had the pleasure of being jjoined by Jems she also had some hookups; A book called Ordinary People by Diana Evans that she picked up recently Check out an article about the book in the Guardian
    https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/apr/11/ordinary-people-diana-evans-review-couples-marital-angst-black-mixed-race
And lastly there's a poetry event going on in Peckham called "The Mood Room" so anyone who wants some good poetry should heave over to the Unicorn bar in Peckham from 4 - 8pm on the 16th of June

  • TBF 110b Gangs, Drill & Prayer Part 2
The BBC created a documentary on how young Christians are using rap and drill music to lure gang members away from the streets and towards God.
It followed a young brother who was recently made a pastor at 21 and his story of salvation and now ordination.
While that's incredibly great and such an inspiring story is told it also presented a view of one of the fastest growing youth focused christian movements that was somewhat controversial especially in terms of doctrine and culture.
This was our first ever episode where we all had the documentary and had to prepare our responses on it (hopefully that showed) we had a great and edifying conversation about our thoughts on the biblical validity of some of the practices that were highlighted by the documentary and inorder to ensure we presented a fully fleshed out representation of our thoughts we actually did this episode in two parts and for the first time in Furnace history we're bringing a double episode.
This is part 2 and mostly focuses on the main subjects church SPAC nation and some of the practices that might be controversial or debatable at the very least.
Just one more thing before I go we had an incredible special guest in Ade, from my days back in Queen Mary University, who brought a uniquely gracious respective to the furnace massive thanks to him for travelling down for this one!!
And speaking of shout outs here are some hookups from the episode
Bobby A suggested the classic hymn What a Friend we have in Jesus check it out on Spotify
    https://open.spotify.com/track/1tXvtfTrtUMcGHotypx78u
Peter suggested checking out the Four horsemen in battle rap, 4 of some of the very best in the culture at the moment
here's a video of two of them in a tag team battle from last year (Some explicit content!)

  • TBF 109 Wanted Down Under (Not the TV show)
Today's episode is definitely not at all related to the TV show looking to help families decide on relocating to Australia, but, with Bobby A's pastor leaving with his family to Sydney Australia it just seemed like an appropriate episode title.
And with that I guess I've given it away, we had the pleasure of being joined by Bobby A's pastor Captain Ashish Pawar and had a really nice conversation about his time spent as a pastor here in London and looking at the emotional, spiritual and mental challenges of making such a big change for himself and his family.
Mo was busy playing pastor at his own church so unfortunately he wasn't here.
Captain Ashish has been on the podcast before and is an incredibly humble and down to earth guy and that shines through so brightly throughout the conversation.
I left really inspired and I'm really excited for you to hear it.
And just before I forget here are our hookups
Bobby A recommeneded a movie from way back called the Mannequin, it's a cult classic he suggests would be a great watch
    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093493/
Peter suggested a new Podcast from the creators of the Daily Audio Bible Chronological which much like the Daily Audio Bible I hooked y'all up with a few months back it's a year long daily reading of the bible in chronological order that will get you through the bible over the course of a year
    http://dabplayer.com/http://dabplayer.com/home/chronological
And Captain Ashish recommended a book called Goliath Must Fall by Pastor Louis Giglio. Check it out here
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Goliath-Must-Fall-Louie-Giglio/dp/0718088867
A special hookup was also provided by one of the long time listeners and friend of the podcast, the Inktrovert who suggested listening to Kaleb Mitchell's album 45
The theme is Michael Jordan and it's an album about God's purpose for us and His equipping us for that purpose so give that a listen too here

  • TBF 108 It's Desiigner not Seamstress!
From a conversation about the benefits of physical books vs e-books to what defines a classic Hip Hop album! Today's podcast was, for the most part, about time and what elements of art and it's enjoyment are affected by technology and the maturation of an audience.
In classic Furnace fashion Bobby managed to fit in a rant about his jam on toast woes, and back-flipping robots so it's definitely a fun listen.
As alwasy we've got some hookups for you
Bobby A suggested checking out a rapper called Joyner Lucas, check out his youtube channel here
    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUebubwSuTHfHjWJI4gCS9A
Peter suggested a new feature on youversion (bible app) that allows for shared reading plans with you and your friends
    Check that out here
    http://youversion.com/
and Mo suggested checking out another great hip hop label called Lampmode, they're a collective of rappers with a big focus on theology and have great doctrine in their songs check them out here!
