The Branding Fix episodes

  • Stop Building Your Business on Rented Land

In this episode of The Branding Fix, we’re talking about platform ownership, rented land, and why creators need more than social media to protect their business.

After hearing about a creator who was making $30,000 a month on YouTube and got demonetized overnight, we break down what it really means to build on platforms you do not own — including YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Substack, and anywhere else your content depends on someone else’s rules.

We talk about why your blog and email list are still two of the most important assets you can build, how social media should support your content ecosystem, and why your audience journey needs to lead somewhere you control.

    In this episode, we cover:

    • What “rented land” means for online creators
    • Why relying only on social media or YouTube is risky
    • The difference between borrowing an audience and owning a platform
    • Why your blog gives you more control, data, and freedom
    • How your email list helps you build trust and guide people through a journey
    • Why social media should be a traffic driver, not the final destination
    • How to think about your content ecosystem as a whole

Listen in and ask yourself: if your favorite platform disappeared tomorrow, what would you still have?

  • Beehiiv vs Substack vs Flodesk: Best Email Platform for Bloggers and Creators

Choosing an email platform sounds simple until you realize every platform is built around a different business model.

In this episode, we’re talking about Beehiiv vs Substack vs Flodesk, but this conversation is really bigger than those three platforms. It’s about understanding what you actually need your email list to do.

Are you trying to build an audience directly on a newsletter platform? Are you trying to drive traffic back to your blog? Are you creating a course, selling a service, running a content business, or building a brand ecosystem where your email list needs to guide people through a specific journey?

    That distinction matters.

We talk about why built-in newsletter platforms can feel appealing, especially when they promise growth, monetization, ad networks, or paid subscriptions. But we also explain the trade-offs, especially if you already have a blog or website that should be your main content home.

One of the biggest problems with platforms like Substack or Beehiiv is that they can blur the line between newsletter and blog. Suddenly, you’re asking yourself: does this piece of content go on my site or inside the newsletter platform? And if it lives in both places, are they competing with each other?

For bloggers, creators, and brand owners who want to own their platform, that friction matters.

We also talk about why analytics and automations are not just “nice to have.” If you want to test content, understand what your audience clicks on, and create interest-based journeys, you need an email platform that gives you actionable data and lets you segment people based on what they actually care about.

And of course, we look at the money side, because platform pricing and monetization models should always be part of the decision.

The big takeaway: don’t choose an email platform because it’s trendy. Choose it because it supports your actual content strategy, business model, and audience journey.

    Watch the video: https://youtu.be/xbixLho_mjs

    In This Episode, We Cover
    • Why Beehiiv may be a good starting point for some creators, but not the right fit for every business
    • The difference between a newsletter platform and a traditional email service provider
    • Why bloggers should be careful about putting long-form content on platforms they don’t own
    • How Substack and Beehiiv can create content strategy confusion
    • Why Flodesk works better for creators who already have a blog or independent website
    • The importance of automations, workflows, and interest-based audience journeys
    • Why analytics matter when testing content and improving your email strategy
    • How platform business models influence the features they prioritize
    • What creators should ask before choosing any email platform
    • Why “free” platforms still have a cost

  • What’s Actually Working in Q2? Our Real-Time Experiments

Q2 is where a lot of creators start second-guessing everything. In this episode, we’re unpacking what it looks like to test things in real time without perfect clarity yet. We talk about the experiments we’re running, how long we give strategies before judging them, why so many people quit in the messy middle, and how to keep going when you do not have obvious proof that something is working yet. It’s part strategy, part mindset reset, and part honest look at what content experimentation really feels like.

    In this episode, we cover:

    • why Q2 often feels like the messy middle for content creators
    • what we’re actively testing right now in blogging, Pinterest, newsletters, Instagram, and traffic strategy
    • how long we give experiments before making decisions
    • the difference between something failing and something just needing more time
    • why delayed results are normal in blogging
    • how to stay consistent when you do not yet have proof something is working
    • why creators quit too early
    • how self-doubt and overanalysis can derail experiments
    • what to look at when assessing whether a strategy is working
    • how to think about goals, metrics, pivots, and sustainability
    • what we would do differently looking back over the last 12 months

  • The Social Media Boundaries Every Creator Needs

In this episode of The Branding Fix, we’re talking about why content creators need stronger boundaries with social media. We get into the real cost of endless scrolling, comparison, niche drama, overstimulation, and the pressure that comes from constantly consuming other people’s content while trying to create your own. We also share the specific boundaries we’re setting, the apps we’re deleting or putting on probation, how we think about scrolling versus creating, and why protecting your focus is one of the most important things you can do for your content. • If We Had to Start Over as Content Creators, We’d Do This

In this episode of The Branding Fix, we’re answering a big question: if we had to start over today with no audience, but everything we know now, what would we do differently? We talk about the platforms we’d focus on, why blogging would still be central, the importance of building an email list early, why we’d prioritize platform monetization before asking an audience to buy, and how we’d create content with more depth and intention instead of chasing keywords or trying to be everywhere. We also get into lean category structure, simplifying your tools and design stack, and why video is now non-negotiable in some form. This is the episode for creators who want to build smarter from the beginning.

  • Hobby or Business? The Content Creator Reality Check

In this episode of The Branding Fix, we’re asking a tough but necessary question: are you actually building a business, or are you just posting content and hoping something happens? We talk about the biggest signs creators are treating content like a hobby instead of a business, including not having a revenue plan, not thinking through traffic strategy, not tracking what works, and making decisions based more on emotion than data. We also get into monetization paths, linking and repurposing content, affiliate opportunities, building deeper topic authority, and what we would do differently if we were starting over today. This is a real talk episode for creators who want more structure, more strategy, and a clearer path to making content pay off.

  • Why Your Content Planning System Is Probably Too Complicated

In this episode of The Branding Fix, we’re talking about the organization trap so many content creators fall into: building elaborate planning systems that look productive but actually eat up the time and energy you need to create. We share our completely different organizational styles, how one of us leaned too far into complex digital systems while the other stayed deeply analog, and how we’ve found a middle ground that actually works. We get into Notion, paper planning, notes apps, calendars, collaboration, and the real question behind all of it: is your system helping you publish, or is it just giving you more admin work? This is the episode for creators who want simpler, more functional ways to plan content without turning organization into a full-time job.

In this episode of The Branding Fix, we’re talking about the money wake-up call that hits so many content creators during tax season. We get into why you need to track your expenses, make more intentional investments, think about return on investment instead of impulse decisions, separate your business finances early, and start building systems that support revenue instead of chaos. If you’ve been treating your content like “just a hobby” while still hoping it turns into income, this episode is the mindset reset.

We deleted 2,800 subscribers from our email list and our open rate jumped to 65%. Here's exactly how we did it, and why we'll do it again.

Most people treat their email list like a trophy. We treat it like a business asset, which means cutting the dead weight on a regular schedule. In this video, we're breaking down our email list cleaning process: why ghost subscribers are quietly destroying your deliverability, how to know when it's time to purge, what a re-engagement email looks like before you cut people loose, and why we make the unsubscribe button impossible to miss.

We use Flodesk and purge every 3–6 months. No regrets. A smaller list that actually reads your emails beats a massive list that ignores them every single time.
