Bob wants to know which drink makes you more creative… beer or coffee.

Paul the Rock God says beer makes him more creative… coffee just gives him the jitters.

NoziPaul says that beer is definitely his creative juice.

J-Dean says that coffee is his productivity beverage but beer is great for creativity. He uses both equally.

Stephanie says that beer isn’t the reason for the creativity but rather the environment that we usually drink beer. The inspiration comes from the people and the atmosphere that you are in and not from the beverage itself!

Margaret says that early morning creativity is definitely coffee but later in the afternoon it would be beer.

Bonnie said that although she doesn’t drink she votes for beer.

Sanj says that in the morning its coffee and in the evening Irish Coffee!

Ken doesn’t drink coffee except when he is working… so when he is working he votes for coffee. He doesn’t drink and work so he’s going with the coffee.

Simon King (special guest co-host) doesn’t like how we are fighting over which drink is the best because it is kind of like picking a favorite child.

Bob asks Simon about being a comedian.

Simon talks about his childhood acting and how he discovered stand-up comedy and never went back.

Simon is confused about Social Media. He has Twitter meltdowns and people say they follow him just to see the meltdowns.

Bonnie said he should be the same person on Twitter as he is on stage.

Simon said he uses Twitter as a writing tool for his jokes as well.

Bob asks about what happens if there is a tragedy in his life and has to go on stage?

Simon said when his Grandmother died he was making fun of her on stage a few days later but that is how he deals with grief. And other comics understand that.

Simon recommends going into the emergency room and twitch because you’ll get free shots.

Simon thinks Bonnie should weaponize her tweets by sending all her followers to No Frills to grab turkeys.

Paul the Rock God asks Simon how he manages his fans. With a newsletter or fan club, etc?

Simon uses his website and facebook fan page account to communicate with all his fans and followers. He said occasionally it gets weird and he can take a step back if needed.

Simon says there are two types of comics in the world… internal and external. Most comics are internal and talk about themselves in relation to the world. Simon says he is an external comic and talks about the world in relation to him. So, therefore his act isn’t about his life as it is with other comics. Simon likes to talk about politics and current events.

He likes to use Twitter to communicate to his fans where he is going to be performing.

Nozi Paul believes Canadians have a problem celebrating Canadian comedians. He gives a great example. Simon agrees and says that we are embarrassed to really promote a comic unless they make it big e...

Bonnie talks about a marketing conference she was at. She said the big takeaway was that your online presence needs to help develop trust with your audience. If they don’ trust you, they don’t buy from you.

Paul the Rock God said that there is a guy that can produce alcohol in his stomach by eating bread. The human brewery!

Is innovation dead at Apple or what? No Apple watch or TV? Just a stinking phone? Fingerprint scanner.

We talk about Apple vs Android? What is new in the new iPhones?

We get a question from someone watching the show live on Youtube. He asks if Apple is stagnant?

No iWatch and no Apple TV? Apple is probably saving these products for their next event. They stagger these launches these days.

Craig talks about how people buy Apple products because it fits into the Apple environment of products. Craig has an Apple environment set up at his home and it works great for his family. He says once they come out with a watch it will have to mesh well with the other products. And if it does that then it doesn’t matter about being first to market with a smart watch.

Who are the cord cutters? He is watching Netflix and streaming everything. Is anyone else cutting the cord?

Bob cut the cord a few years ago. Andrew cut the cord for six years but now the cord is back… thinking about cutting it again.

We all suggest Akismet which is a plugin that stops 99% of comment spam.

Andrew brings up facebook or google + comments which also eliminate spam because you have to comment using your social profile.

Bob likes the Pulse Hover plugin which adds social sharing options right on the picture.

Paul asks what happens when WordPress upgrades… does it break the plugin?

Guinness is running an NFC promotion where you tap your smarsmartphoneinst the tap and you can win a pint. Previously they did a QR Code glass that was only visible with Guinness in it.

Nexus 7 vs iPad Mini

Norm calls in to let us know he is thinking about getting a new tablet but is torn between getting a Nexus 7 or an iPad mini. He is concerned that Google is only selling the hardware for less money because they are interested in harvesting your data. Should he go with Apple to avoid his information being harvested or should he sell himself to Google to get a deal?

Settings in your Android phone to block kids from buying apps

Bob talks about his experience buying the Nexus 7. He played with it for 2 days and then boxed it back up and sent it back. He returned it because he has a Nexus 4 and it is basically a bigger Nexus 4. Bob needs a device for production, not consumption. So he sent it back.

Bob says the Tech pundits sell a lot of tech to people who don’t really need it. Leo Laporte drives a lot of sales because he buys everything and says they are all great and recommends everybody buys all the gear.

Remember to check for restocking fees before you buy tech devices.

Paul asks if licensing is a good idea for Blackberry? Andrew and Ken agree that is the right thing to do for Blackberry and they should have done it much sooner. By licensing BBM, Blackberry users will be able to BBM non Blackberry devices.

Show 147 - Your Hootsuite or mine?

* NSA Monitoring Is Child’s Play Compared to the Marketing Industry

* The NSA whistleblower revealed the extent to which they are monitoring the public.

* On For Immediate Release podcast, they talked about the fact that the marketing and advertising industry is much more sophisticated and makes the NSA look like child's play.

* Does the harvesting of data go too far? Ian says it is user beware. Andrew says that it goes beyond user beware because they can harvest information from people who didn’t give it to them and don’t have profiles. The facebook app pulls information from your smart phones phone book and they create a shadow profile containing info that wasn’t supplied to them by the user.

* Is anything private online? Don’t count on it. You have to expect that it could and probably will be public.

* Bob ordered a Nexus 7:

He is looking forward to getting it. Last time he waited a few days and they sold out which caused him to receive it 4 months later! So this time he ordered it right away and should have it in a week. The screen looks good with greater than retina display.

* Microsoft would be better off with a better-looking CEO according to a secret source Andrew spoke with. If Steve Balmer was better looking the Surface would have been a success.

Even though Paul is in here in person he called his question in so he wouldn’t forget it.

Paul asks what tool he should use to schedule his posts? He is looking at Buffer and Hootsuite right now but is looking for suggestions.

* Ian said that Hootsuite is a better comprehensive tool than Buffer for now. But he suggests looking into Oktopost which is a really cool tool where everything can be set up as a campaign.

* Stephanie said that when your deciding which platform to use and two will do the job look at which one has the best community and support.

* Bob says Hootsuite is great posting tool but Oktopost is a more sophisticated marketing system.

* Hootsuite has very robust reporting in the higher end plans.

* Ken suggests looking into Social Bro.

* Ian suggests NOT posting more than one week in advance. People will know that it isn’t you posting. It will be irrelevant content if you're posting too far in advance.

* Stephanie brings up a case study which can be found at www.wildfireeffect.com. The Georgia Stones web series, which is an interactive web series was promoted into a school district in Scotland by a super fan.

* Bob and Ian talk about some bad experiences with Air Canada and British Airways.

* We talk about the airline industry… and some great ideas to increase revenue.It ain’t easy being green… Drunk Kermit the Frog is our number one hit in Google Analytics.

Norm calls in to say that the airplane crash in San Francisco had better coverage from Twitter than CNN. Margaret talks about an example of people using Youtube instead of speaking to the media in big stories. The media will edit your statements and slant them towards their bias.

Ken said that the media always has a bias. They are biased based on who is paying the bills this month. The content is supported by advertising and they won’t bite the hand that feeds them.

We talk about how the media sensationalizes the news.

Andrew brings up Big Pharma being a big time advertiser and that is the reason why the mainstream media portrays natural medicine as a bunch of wacko quacks.

Margaret brings up Traditional Chinese Medicine and how they are being treated in North America. Chrystal said in China there is a system of certifying TCM professionals which don't exist here.

Chrystal said some of the points are death points. Andrew said that the 5 touch, 5 step, exploding heart technique from Kill Bill 2 is awesome.

Bob starts off talking about Borderlands, a game that he downloaded this week and is addicted to it.

• Marcel says facial recognition will be coming and it will be crazy in a couple years.

• Paul says take what Google with a pinch of salt.

• Satomi isn’t sure about the Google Glass.

• Bob loves the idea of facial recognition because he remembers faces but not names and this would help with that.

• James said it could be used for good or evil…

• Andrew said when camera phones came out people were initially freaked out about it and then became part of everyday life.

• Margaret said you can just drag a picture into a Google images search and it will bring up other like pictures so it could be done with a face.

• Kurt wants to know where you go to become registered dyslexia.

• Jane Doe doesn’t care for facial recognition.

• Randall says that facial recognition will be great at networking events.

• Margaret wants to know if there will be an MLM alert.

• Andrew said the bigger the front end load the more money you can make…

• Bonnie said her Google Glasses will need an upgrade in order to get facial recognition.

• Bonnie said she doesn’t see the difference between Glass having it and Facebook having it.

Gaming with James:

• E3 – We now see what the next 10 years of gaming consoles will look like.

• James likes the XBox One… he said if you do a 360 you get ONE.

• James is going against the grain and says that the XBox One is positioned better for the future.

• PS4 is less expensive, XBox has better in home entertainment options.

• James thinks there is too much hearsay and we won’t really know until the devices are released in six months.

• The used game issue is a huge thing in the gaming industry. People won’t be able to sell their used games anymore.

• Everything is going digital and you aren’t buying the book… your buying a license to have the book in a specific medium.

• Marcel said when a DVD sucks you can buy them for cheap in the discount bin at Walmart. Is it the same for games?

• James said you could sell your account with all your games in it.

• We go over an article comparing the XBOX One and the PS4.

• Andrew sneaks in “Social Media is Bullshit” into the show again….

• Bottom line… get both XBox and PS4!

• Norm was checking out our show notes and saw some interesting points. He thinks patent trolls suck and they are the scum of the earth. He said Apple doesn’t seem to be leaders anymore and appear to be laggers. He asks James when will XBox be the complete box and replace the home computer.

Conspiracy Talk

• The words the NSA is scanning for include Terrorist, Bomb and Social Media – wtf?

• Bob said back in 1972 we lost our privacy… people who are complaining now are too late.

• Prism – a special folder that is only accessible by the government. The government requests information and the corporation copies the info into the folder.

• Margaret says the government doesn’t have the resources to monitor everybody and scan everyone’s info. Ian disagrees.

• Bonnie said if your bad guy doesn't be good at SEO.

• Andrew doesn’t think Prism is a bad idea in and of itself but the problem is that the government can arbitrarily get information about people without reasonable suspicion.

• Bob said the police can take data from your smartphone when they pull you over.

• We talk about cell phone companies and if they store people's information.

• The NSA whistleblower, Edward Snowden is hiding out in Hong Kong.

• Bonnie said nobody cares about their privacy and government monitoring.

• Andrew mentions the new Consumer Protection Act which allows seizure of private property without court oversight.

• Paul brings up Google and other corporations being just as bad as the government.

Good News on the Podcast Patent

• Andrew mentions some good progress in the fight against the podcast patent.

• Ian asks if Andrew owns the patent… Andrew says he grabbed a patent that predated Personal Audio’s patent and invalidated it!

• We digress about fiver.com

• The Electronic Frontier Foundation has taken up the fight against Personal Audio LLC.

• They raised the money required to contest the patent within 10 hours. They are going to take the fight directly to the Patent and Trademark Office instead of going to court. They are looking for help in finding ‘prior art’ which predates 1996 showing the concept of podcasting existed before Personal Audio’s claim.

The New iOS

• Andrew said that the new iOS looks good even though they heavily borrow from Android, Windows Phone, and Blackberry.

• James said they should have partnered with other companies instead of competing with Pandora and others.

• James said the only cool thing Apple announced was the Mac Pro.
