Show 142

We start the show off talking about our sponsor, Brewmaster Black. Marcel said once you go black you never go back. Marcel asks if everyone agrees… Marcel has gone back and will not go back (when it comes to beer). Margaret has gone black and been back. She is using the blonde exception clause. OK Spring 1516 is made using the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516 which means the beer is made with only four ingredients and no preservatives…

Andrew brings up the podcast patent and the possibility of getting patent and trademark lawyer, Andrew Mincov to join us for a show again to discuss it.

Round Table Intro Question: Name, Twitter Handle and which social media platform or app are you burnt out on and why?

• Marilyn isn’t into Pinterest anymore. Margaret said Pinterest is for great recipes and food porn.

• Sanj is having difficulty getting engagement on his Facebook business page.

• Kurtis is burnt out on Linked In with all the spam going on.

• Marcel doesn’t have a good answer but doesn’t want to be thrown under the bus.

• Randall only uses the big three. Linked in Twitter and Pinterest… oops. He meant Facebook. He is burnt out on Facebook cat pictures.

• Bonnie is burnt out on Social Media Kumbaya. She was bored of Pinterest after two days. We talk about if people are really making money on Pinterest.

• Margaret is also burnt out on Pinterest because she finds it the least useful.

• Bonnie said that Social Media for SEO is bullshit. Sanj and Bosco say that social click throughs can be bad for SEO because it can seriously increase the bounce rate.

• James isn’t burnt out on any social platform because he can effectively manage his time. Although he doesn’t like the new Google Plus layout… Ken like the layout but doesn’t like what they did with hangouts.

• Bosco is burnt out on Foursquare because he was stalked by people who saw him speak at events.

• Andrew was excited about the New Myspace before it came out. But he was burnt out after a few minutes. Margaret said it is because it is lonely there. Andrew says that the New Myspace should invite all the podcasters to host their media files for free (or use the fremium model) and everyone would have been talking about the New Myspace on their podcast shows. It would have been free advertising for the site and could generate a ton of buzz and make it place worth hanging out in.

• Bob is burnt out on a lot of things but mostly he is burnt out on Vancouver. Oh oh.

Is Vancouver bullshit?

• Bob said that Vancouver is full of a bunch of posturing wannabees and nobody does real business here.

• Andrew asks in the digital age does it matter where you are physically located? Can’t you do business from anywhere to anywhere in the world? Bob said that is true but Vancouver has such a bad international reputation for being a bunch of idiots that you can’t get the big deals.

• Margaret said don’t be a social media douche.

• Bonnie said don’t spam which basically means don’t be annoying and especially don’t be annoying three times in a row.

• Kurtis said to build community focus on having great content.

• Sanj updated his blog plugin and previously had disabled auto-posting but the upgrade turned it back on… so he posted to all networks at the same time.

• Norm heard on another podcast that Google + can take images and organize them and auto suggest (identify) your friends to tag them. And it detects smiles and which pictures are the best.

• Bob talks about how great Google’s technology is compared to the competitors.

• Some talk about Camera Phones and Smart Cameras. Bob said if you don’t understand light you won’t be able to take a good picture no matter what hardware you have.

Traversing the Digital Divide

• James and Bob said trying to get to know your online community personally is the key to building a strong community.

• Bonnie said that is fine if you're doing business locally but not most people aren’t these days.

• Bob said meeting your community when you travel for conferences to Las Vegas or New York is what he’s talking about.

• Bonnie disagrees and says online is good enough with G+ Hangouts and the ability to communicate online.

• James brings up the Craft Beer Nation hangout community has grown to 6000 members and Bob said James would definitely meet those guys in person for beers if he was visiting their city. James agrees.

• Andrew said the point isn’t necessarily to meet your community in person but to get know them, who are they, what do they do, etc.

• Bonnie said this a little to Kumbaya for her… She isn’t going to send a personal tweet to all her 104 000 followers.

• She said generally people who say this don’t like to be friends with only 150 (Dunbar number) people.

Bunker Project Hits The Road

We start off the show with Big Bosco (pro wrestling name for Bosco Anthony) and Kemp Edmonds. Andrew and Bob shoot the shit with Kemp and Bosco and we get right into Social Media talk. Andrew asks Kemp if Social Media is bullshit…

We talk about BJ Mendelson’s book, “Social Media is Bullshit” and Ryan Calloway’s “Trust Me I’m Lying”. Two great books on Social Media and manipulation of mainstream media.

*** Someone comes up and tells us we are speaking too loud and the podcast is overpowering the expert panel downstairs ***

James Karg, the Gaming Maven, joins us and Bosco immediately make fun of him for being a Blackberry fan.

Bosco laughs that the Bunker show always starts with a theme and then digresses for the whole show and then in the last five minutes we get back on topic.

We switch back to the Expert Panel… Bonnie is talking about the Bunker Project being a non-selling zone where people come for information…

Andrew McGivern, Bob Garlick, and James give play-by-play commentary during the questions on the panel.

James talks about Start Up weekend and how they look for people to speak.

Bosco talks about public speaking and his development over time. James said Bosco has great outfits and when you look your best you do your best. Bosco said his favorite thing about the Bunker show is that we stay current and that is important for choosing your speakers and topics for events. James and Bosco talk about taking some risks with your speaking.

Bob goes back to Bonnie’s comment about not selling or plugging your events or courses. Bob says it is ok ifyou'rer adding value and not just making a sales pitch. Bosco said the age of pitch marketing is coming to an end.

Bosco points out that in mainstream media there are still a lot of old school marketers in charge.

Bosco takes an issue with the idea that you have to have a presence everywhere. If your presence on a platform sucks then it isn’t worth being there and can actually hurt your brand.

Bosco talks about Oreo’s ad supporting gay people with different coloured Oreo cookies but they didn’t actually make those cookies and that is where they failed to take advantage of the viral effect of the ad.

The Communications Maven, Maryln Anderson and Social Media dude, Wayne joins us for a chat up in the balcony. We talk about The Fan Club location and The Bunker show and more.

Wayne is part of the Social Media Club because he does all the Digital Marketing for a major company in Vancouver and is utilizing new media to further the impact of the brand. Round Table Intro Question: Name, Twitter Handle and How do Men and Women do Social Media differently?

• Andrew said that he thinks that Women are more social on Social Media than men are. More Cats and Kittens are posted by Women.

• Bonnie said that Women are better at pinning stuff… She says there are more Women and more Old Women purchasing technology than men… Andrew says Women Talking Tech should be called Women Talking Smack.

• Margaret said that Women are known as better communicators and may be better at using Social Media than Men.

• Marcel said that better at communicating = better at nagging. But there isn’t much difference between men and women. But he’d like to take this opportunity to promote his new book “Social Media is Fish” and he has no idea why Facebook isn’t called Fishbook.

• Sanj said that most of his gal friends share a lot of cats on social media and are definitely better at it.

• Randall said Women do it differently.

• Ian said there are good men and good women on social media. Andrew asks what percentage of men vs women are ass clowns online.

• James does his best Sanj impersonation… James said women are knowledge givers and men are story tellers. Good answer.

• Ken said that the one reason that women are better at Social Media because of one word – MultiTasking.

• Bob said the ratio for waves and waves back… huh? Oh, he is waving at the girls as they walk by outside. Bob said that men are better at using systems because they just want to get it over with and women love the actual process of socializing.

Bonnie gives us her review on Windows Phone 8.

• Very easy to use

• Fast

• Business friendly

• Totally different from Android but it is very easy to learn.

• Andrew asks what she likes best about the phone. She likes the simplicity of the OS and also the availability of MS Office.

• Not as many apps are available but quite often pinning the mobile site (if there is one) to the home page works just as well.

• The virtual keyboard is one of the best she has used.

Social Media #FAIL

• Kitchen makeovers – this couple got in a war on Social Media.

• Now they are claiming they are hacked and said they would never say these things.

• Bob asks if this bad publicity will help them or hurt them? Marcel asks if there is such a thing bad publicity.

• Marcel said that because it isn’t an established brand it might work out for them but for established brands like Applebees it will hurt them. Interesting point.

• Paul asked if Gordon Ramsay ever gets bad publicity for being an asshole.

Andrew’s big announcement

Mateo (Andrew’s son) is going to be a brother…. Andrew explains how at the ultrasound he noticed something weird and it turns out that there are two babies. OMG TWINS…

It looks like they might be identical too… two boys or two girls.

Andrew was thinking about getting the Ford Focus ST but it is out now… Ian recommends the Mazda 5.

Ken suggests a “name the babies” contest for the Bunker Project. Andrew said Martini and Daquari works… Margaret said Belini is better. Or Baggette and Brie.

Andrew said they hoping they are boys because he doesn’t want to buy a shotgun… and they already have the toys for boys. Margaret said why can’t girls play with those toys.

A home birth is out of the question this time. Mateo was born at home.

Bob tells the story about being in Thailand when his first daughter was born. He came back from an art show totally pissed and his wife’s water broke. He took her to the hospital and Bob had a great time watching the C-Section. And then the second time he was even drunker… he said hey Doc, I’ve done this before… give me the knife… there is still a mark from the last time!

Linked In Terms of Service  Changes:

Ian talks about the new changes to the Linked In user agreement.

They are trying to cut back on third-party posting on Linked In. And also an inappropriate use of the headline.

Nobody here has read the book yet with the exception of the free chapter. Some of us are planning on reading it but for now, we are going to talk about the concept that the book represents and not the book itself.

• Bonnie said the guy is a hack and we should be discussing work by thought leaders like Brian Solis.

• Andrew said that maybe it is a good book and the author could be going places.

• Everyone agrees it is a good title for the book which will help it sell.

He is a Certified General Accountant and the CGA sent out a course on Social Media and said you guys should be using social media to promote yourselves.

• Margaret and Randall talk about professional associations and the restrictions they put on members on what they can say on social media.

• Margaret went independent so she didn’t have to deal with the legal department of a big company.

Marcel thinks that the guy that wrote Social Media is Bullshit doesn’t really think it is BS and is just trying to get a rise out of people and make waves in the social media world.

• Bonnie brings up an example about two families that were thrown in jail over false accusations of sexual abuse. It was later determined to be completely false.

• Bob said Bevan looks like Clark Kent. Bonnie asks Bob why he is hitting on everyone tonight. Bevan participates in a podcast called The Panel which is a comic book podcast. Bevin is a comic book writer but not a comic artist. Bob asks if there is a lot of comic book artists who are also comic writers. Bevin says in the bigger companies the roles are separated but independent comic producers do everything themselves. Andrew asks if there is a job for a comic colouring person because he has a two-year old that can do that…

• Randall is a regular on The Bunker Project but doesn’t have a web show or podcast. He would like to do a show on how to reduce taxes.

• Margaret doesn’t have a podcast but she co-hosts a web show with Bonnie called Woman Talking Tech and she co-hosts another show called To Finance and Protect. She is also a regular on The Bunker Project.

• Bonnie was listed in the top 20 women social influencers and the top 50 overall social media influencers. She has also been made a brand ambassador for Microsoft. She Co-Hosts Women Talking Tech with Margaret and she would like to do a tech gadget show.

• Earl works for a bag manufacturing company by day… if he was to do a podcast it would be an outdoorsy type podcast. He once cycled down to California by himself on a whim. He also did the West Coast Trail by himself.

• JJ McCoullagh is a political cartoonist and political columnist for the Huffington Post. JJ says “about” the Canadian way…. aboot. He used to do a podcast with an American that was well versed in Canadian politics. His cohost was more Liberal than JJ so they had the Canada vs the USA and Right vs Left thing going. JJ recommends the NPR Politics podcast and The Slate Political Gabfest.

• Andrew asks JJ where he stands on gun control in the US. He says legislation shouldn’t be passed for a warm fuzzy feeling. He isn’t in favour of passing laws for ideological reasons.

Show 135 – Bonnie is Bonified and How to Build Social Media Influence.

 

Round Table Intros:

Round Table Intro Question: Name, Twitter Handle and what are you doing to build influence online?

• Andrew is curating content he finds in RSS Feeds and the Zite App and uses analytics to see what types of content his followers like and he gives them more of it. He is also doing some podcast equipment reviews and blogging more about mobile technology as well.

• Bob is putting out information for free. Some of the research he does for clients he puts out there for others.

• Geoff is working on creating comic strips for businesses to use as advertising or promotional material. He is involved with Behance which is like Linked In for artists which have worked out well for him.

• Randall concentrates on Facebook, Twitter and Linked in and puts out a daily tip on each site. The tips are different on each platform so he isn’t blasting the same thing across platforms. He also blogs three times a week on his blog.

• Margaret is using social media to put out really raw and relevant content out there. She has two web shows she is co-hosting and is continually learning how to optimize her usage of Social Media.

• Bonnie said the numbers are important. She said they have to be real people and you have to engage with your followers. It is also all about content, content and more content. Andrew asks Bonnie if Scribe is worth the money?  Bonnie has it and she said it is totally worth it. For beginners, SEO by Yoast is a good option. For more advanced bloggers Scribe is great.

• Earl works at an industrial filter bag manufacturing company. He is very interested in Social Media and Podcasting because his friend got him into podcasting. The first podcast he got into was the Joe Rogan show. Earl is a big Reddit user. Earl likes to write lots of in-depth posts… Andrew asks if he is a Reddit Troll?  Definitely not. We talk about podcatching software. Earl used to like Pocket Casts but after an update, it had too many bugs and now uses Beyond Pod. Bob uses Dogcatcher and Andrew still loves Pocket Casts for iOS. Earl has a cool new blue camera and an adapter to send images to his phone or tablet.

• JJ is a political cartoonist and political columnist for The Huffington Post and political commentator for CTV.  Andrew asks JJ what he thinks about Justin Trudeau? And who is the Ron Paul of Canada? JJ had a spat on Twitter with Elizabeth May. With Social Media, it is easy to engage with the politicians publicly.

• Bonnie said she spent 3 1/2 years in a cubicle with a guy that only talked about video games and peeler bars. So the whole time she listened to music. Leo Laporte was her first podcast. Does she not know what GBox is?

• Margaret said the Bunker Project was the first ever podcast she listened to and she never had a cubicle… she had an office and could shut her door! She doesn’t know what the @#$% GBox is.

• Troy doesn’t know anything about a Box… the electronic box that is. Troy mentions he trains Spandy Andy. Marcel asks who is Spandy Andy?

• James said the GBox is extremely hard to find. He hasn’t heard of it at all.

• Margaret says Norm knows us well enough to mess with us. Marcel said no way… Norm actually cares what we have to say.

• James said that most strippers are gamers now. James said if your going for a stripper pick one that is fiscally minded and forward thinking.

• James first podcast was The Bunker Project or Geek Beat.

• Sanj is wondering what is going on? He signed up for a social media Meetup and everyone is talking GBox? The first podcast Sanj ever listenBed to was also The Bunker Project.

• Marcel has no clue what the GBox is? His first podcast was The Bunker Project! And now he listens to a ton of them and is a podcaster himself.

• Brian hasn’t heard of the GBox but knows about Music Box Dancer. His first podcast was a Blog Talk Radio show that Bonnie did a few years back.

• Roberto in the hangout actually HAS heard about the GBox. Marcel freaks out that he actually knows and the Google Hangout dies…

• Marcel said the universe is against us knowing what the GBox is? But Roberto is back… and it is at www.androidtvbox.us.

• The GBox is a little android microcomputer.

The Italian Stallion Maven, Carlo, calls in and asks how to use Linked In to get leads for high-end software sales in the medical industry.

• Ian said first and foremost, identify who the purchasers are.

• Second, participate in Linked In groups and people that are looking for a better solution will identify themselves.

• Ian said that to find them you can definitely search on Linked In. He recommends getting a paid Linked In account.

• Identify the pain points that your solution solves and ask questions that will position your product as the solution.

Nimble:

• Nimble is a social CRM that makes it easy to prospect your social media network.

• Margaret is using Nimble and loves it. She said it is awesome but a little creepy.

• You can automatically import your GMail, Linked In, Twitter, Facebook, and more contacts into Nimble.

• The Pro Account is $15 per month and is good for ...
