In this episode of The Catholic Gentleman, Sam and John discuss a great pathway this Lent for men. Formed by many years guiding men in the desert to better understand themselves and grow in their union with Christ, Fr. Innocent Montgomery, C.F.R. shares his wisdom with us for this Lent and beyond. We share in his joy as a Franciscan Friar, hear great stories, and learn why he felt called to write a book for men that guides us through Lent and the Easter Octave.
In this episode we discuss;

Fr. Innocent Montgomery, CFR grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska as one of a triplet, and his triplet brother is also a CFR priest. He attended Saint Gregory the Great Seminary for his undergrad in philosophy. He entered the Friars in 2007 and spent many joyful years serving the homeless and drug addicts at Saint Anthony’s Shelter in the Bronx. He made his final vows in 2012 and was ordained to the priesthood in 2016. His master’s thesis work in seminary was in Christological anthropology. He now serves as the Postulant Director for the CFRs, accompanying the young brothers in early formation as they learn how to pray, live in fraternity, and love and serve the poor. One of his greatest joys is to bless people in their identity as sons and daughters of the Father.

Beauty belongs to Catholicism, yet we see fewer and fewer traces of this in our modern Churches. Men often ignore this transcendental and lack a depth of understanding of the objective nature of beauty. It is time to learn how beauty is tied to truth and goodness and how it can awaken within your soul an improved man. We are joined today by Robert Puschautz, a professional artist of the Stabat Mater Foundation, to learn why this is the case and how we can fix it.

"We no longer dare to believe in beauty and we make of it a mere appearance in order the more easily to dispose of it. Our situation today shows that beauty demands for itself at least as much courage and decision as do truth and goodness, and she will not allow herself to be separated and banned from her two sisters without taking them along with herself in an act of mysterious vengeance. We can be sure that whoever sneers at her name as if she were the ornament of a bourgeois past -- whether he admits it or not -- can no longer pray and soon will no longer be able to love." - Hans Urs von Balthazar

It has been used for centuries to elevate and to glorify the Mass, memorize Scripture, and harnessed as a weapon against Satan. Although we see little evidence of this in the modern context, men must understand that music has been given pride of place in the Divine Liturgy. Today, Sam and John are joined by a composer, convert, and man of wisdom, Paul Jernberg, who is working to correct bad Church music and restore the glory of music once again.
