The CITIUS MAG Podcast | A Running + Track and Field Show episodes

  • Berlin Marathon Takeover: Meet Ryan Welsh
Continuing the series ahead of the Berlin Marathon, I'd like to introduce you to my closest training partner on the Brooklyn Track Club. The listeners, readers and supporters of CITIUS MAG have been super responsive in me sharing some of my own respective marathon training so we're going to try and capture our experience ahead of the 2019 Berlin Marathon through a series of four podcast episodes. Meet Ryan Welsh.
Ryan has run maybe 80% of this training cycle with me and is the reason why I've set off on this crazy idea to chase a Boston Marathon qualifier for 2021. He shares how he found running after a career as a high school and college football player. Through his mother's inspiration, while battling cancer, he decided to sign up for his first marathon. After her passing, he took a break from running but then found it again. Hear how he developed a passion for the sport and then brought that same football-basketball mentality to chase his best on the track and roads.
Yosef Herzog helps co-host this episode and was featured on the previous episode.

  • Berlin Marathon Takeover: Meet Yosef Herzog
In the next two weeks, I'd like to introduce you all to two key friends and teammates of mine on the Brooklyn Track Club. The listeners, readers and supporters of CITIUS MAG have been super responsive in me sharing some of my own respective marathon training so we're going to try and capture our experience ahead of the 2019 Berlin Marathon through a series of four podcast episodes. On the first one, I want to share with you is Yosef Herzog.
He's been called the "Magic Mike" of stage managers by the Today Show but way before he was preparing to try and BQ, he could barely tie his shoelaces without getting out of breath. His inspiring weight loss story has been told by Today and Men's Health but hear it in his own words. He was a volleyball player at Yeshiva University but that's around the same time that his diet took a turn for the worst. From double-fisting burger to heavy dinners, Yosef let himself go. Hear how the lightbulb turned on for him and got him from barely running a mile on a treadmill to two marathon finishes.
Ryan Welsh helps co-host this episode. He will be the next guest.

  • Woody Kincaid on Running 12:58 for 5,000m (No. 5 U.S. All-Time!)
The Woodman cometh back on the podcast, This week, Woody Kincaid became the 5th fastest American of all-time and the eighth man to run under 13-minutes when he won the Portland 5,000 in 12:58.10 at the Michael Johnson track on Nike's campus. Lopez Lomong and Matt Centrowtz finished behind him and both notched the 2020 Olympic standard.
On this episode, Woody breaks down in full detail every aspect of that race. How he rebounded from injury in the past 18 months. How much did the atmosphere factor into the performance? Should Matt Centrowitz stay at the 1,500? What's it like being undefeated and now faster than Galen Rupp? Is the beef with Paul Chelimo squashed? And much more...

  • Matt Futterman on Running to the Edge: A Band of Misfits & the Guru Who Unlocked Secrets of Speed
"What I hope is that it's the book that can make you faster, make you love running even more and make you feel like you want to go out for a run – which people have told me and that's really cool that's the feeling they get."
Matthew Futterman, the New York Times' deputy sports editor, joins the podcast to discuss his new book "Running to the Edge: A Band of Misfits and the Guru Who Unlocked the Secrets of Speed." The book paints an excellent portrait of Bob Larsen’s untraditional training methods and plans to really make U.S. distance running relevant again in the early 2000s with Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor. Beyond just being a running book, there are many life lessons in a great underdog story.

We look ahead to what she could possibly focus on for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials with such a crowded and tough steeplechase field, overcoming injury and her viral Instagram post that called out criticism of women's body image talk during races.

  • Stephen Kersh Unpacks Western States and His First 100-Mile Race, 7th Place in 15:54
“The ugly side of the sport is an amazing thing that we get to experience as runners. That’s the most appealing thing to me about running is just to get yourself in these pretty daunting situations, pull yourself up and march through it. Usually, it works pretty well as a larger metaphor for life.”
Stephen Kersh joins the podcast. He might be familiar to a lot of people who follow the podcast since he's made a couple of appearances on the feed and also was one of the integral figures who helped start CITIUS MAG in 2017. This past weekend I was part of his crew at the Western States Endurance Run. It’s a 100-mile race from Squaw to Auburn in California. This was his first Western States and his first-ever 100-mile race and he did it in 15 hours, 54 minutes and 15 seconds to finish 7th overall. Heck of a debut.
I was truly honored to be part of it. Major props to my fellow crew members Jeanne Mack, Paul Snyder, Tim Jeffreys, Ryan Sterner and the Kersh family. I sat down with Stephen on Sunday night to try and unpack the whole day. I'm joined on this episode by Tim, Ryan and Paul.
Stay tuned for a thorough recap of the crewing experience by reading on CITIUSMAG.com.

  • Remembering Gabe Grunewald
    Remembering Gabriele Grunewald
What you’ll hear on this episode is audio from April 2017. Bear with me if the audio quality from the call wasn’t the best. It was from an interview with Gabe about her life that I never got around to using. I had this recording on my phone for two years. I listened to it for the first time recently and jotted down notes. Gabe shared a lot of her life story with me. It was awesome to hear and in retrospect, the amount of hope and bravery that she had as we talked and she faced her latest cancer battle, was something that never changed with her.
Initially, I wasn’t planning to release this audio but after talking to several people at the memorial run in New York who wanted to hear it when I mentioned some tidbits from it, I figured it would be best to share with everyone.
