Colleges are starting to verify what students put on the Common App. A made-up internship, paper, or activity can become a rejection risk the moment a college asks the student to explain it.
Andy Lockwood covers the new application checks, a student who backed out of a 60-second interview about a paper he claimed to coauthor, and a real client who wanted to list a dental internship she never completed.
He also explains why school counselors cannot verify every activity, how AI is making applications look more alike, and what a specific, personal essay needs to do to survive both a skeptical reader and a follow-up question.
What you'll learn:
- The difference between strong application polish and fiction - How colleges can check activities and research claims - Why generic AI writing creates a chance for real voice to stand out - Why test scores may carry more weight when other claims are hard to trust

The Common App Lie That Can Get Your Student Rejected

The federal government just changed the math on paying for college. Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, parents are now capped at $65,000 in total federal borrowing per student — and no more than $20,000 in any single year. In this episode, Andy and Pearl Lockwood walk through what that cap actually does to a four-year payment plan, and why so many families are about to get blindsided in their senior year.
Then the good news: a wave of top schools rolling out income-based tuition. Yale, Harvard, MIT and Penn going tuition-free for families under $200,000. Plus how to write a Common App activities section that sells instead of bores — including the exact before-and-after that turns "I worked at a deli" into an entry admissions officers stop on.
In this episode: - The $65K federal loan cap and the $20K-per-year limit - The schools going tuition-free for families under $200K - Why your application is a marketing document, not a report card - The cashiering before-and-after that actually gets noticed

How To Negotiate With Colleges After They “Lowball” You

In this episode I talk/rant about the sleeping elephant in the room: Going to college and learning NOTHING that an employer wants or values. The big picture here is that there’s a major problemo: Student debt is at all-time high (and seems to increase each time stats are released) 80% of kids change majors If…

Go find the nearest dumpster, because you’d better get used to your future home and source of food. OK, perhaps I’m overreacting a smidgeon. 🙂 Check out this episode to hear some (slightly) better advice about…
