We open the show with a shot across The Construction Life bow when Steve brings up his construction bone, he has a problem with people that talk negatively about tool influencers. We get right into the whole social media influencing game since Manny has been very vocal about calling these “influencers” the Tourist In Construction or TIC’s. Jim asks, what makes these influencers experts? Jim feels it’s the first time that these so called influencers are using these tools and using them in their mom’s backyard and not a real job sites by real tradespeople.
We get into branding and why certain trades use certain tool brands and how true this is. We dive deep into health and safety of all Bosch tools and the future if where tools are heading with batteries and why Bosch as a leader makes tools that last, they make batteries that last and they refuse to go to market to simply be the first ones there. Bosch spends so much money on R&D and battery new technology so the batteries can last decades.
The topic of trade schools and are the up and coming young tradespeople ready for the job site, we all feel they are not ready and all three of us make some really great suggestions.
Bosch has some amazing new tools coming in 2021 and trust us you want to be asking a real tradesperson about these new tools. What an amazing show with so much truth behind the mic.
Thanks Steve for being on the show and sharing so much about tools and Bosch Tools, find them @boschtoolscanada and @boschtoolsna and www.boschtoolscanada.ca

We discuss what it is like building to this luxury scale and how the trades of today need way too much handholding, or babysitting or our new term, tradesitting because too many trades simply don’t care enough. We dive deep into what makes these 19 luxury 3500 sq ft 4 story homes way above building code and all of the above fire codes this team has contributed this project.

The newly formed The Construction Life 2.0 with Manny and Jim asking the direct questions about the construction industry.
The wine is poured, it’s a nice fall evening and Jim and Manny sit down to talk about the construction life. Let’s talk about Renovation Price, Quality and Time, pick 2. Clients need to understand how this renovation triangle works and why. It always begins with price, that submitted estimate and the clients flipping through the scope and ending at the back page and the final number. Clients need to understand there is cause behind that final number and clients need to compare apples with apples when sourcing out a contractor. Jim and Manny talk about client expectations, the ups and downs of any project, how nice things are in the beginning and how there will come a time where the client will not like the contractor. The topic of reno shows come up and Jim shares a few behind the scenes stories and even reveals what kind of reno show he wants to see. Jim and Manny discuss setting up your business properly and legally and prepare yourself to grow your business. Jim talks about his first big reno at $20K and how nervous he was and how that 20 turned into 50K and then 100K and now a million dollars and how he handles all of his projects. Manny and Jim discuss babysitting trades, or how Jim calls it, Tradesitting, how job site etiquette is so important. Jim discusses his goals, his construction goals and how he focused on the gain and the gap of the goal, you don’t want to miss this part of the podcast. Don’t chase the buck, keep doing what you’re doing and the buck will chase you.

Wish was a metal fabricator and one day the writing was on the wall and he say his termination, worried Wish had no idea what to do next but quickly realized he can do some handyman work until he figures out his next move. Go figure, he got his first job a week after being fired and the work has not stopped. Wish was in his late 40’s when this all happened and with the help of a government program, the SEB Supplement Employment Benefit program that is still active today during these difficult Covid times. Wish learned a lot during that SEB program on how to set up a business.
Wish has always been realistic and honest with his clients and has always stayed that way and he has built a solid list of clients and client referrals. Wish ahs been very lucking finding employees that care and want to learn and help build his business, most of his employees over the 12 years have been from post schooling and the word got out. Right now Wish has a solid team and looking to hand the torch over to one of his team members, Wish has an exit strategy and that is where his lead hand, Sean will take over.

Rosie and Rob join Manny and Carlito to talk about construction and food and Covid and how things were, how they are and what we hope things will be like soon enough. We get right into how best to cook speducci and we get right the whole menu and how you can step up your lunch game on the job site with a little help from Speducci. Oh and the salt, wait for it, the salt is key. We discuss the upcoming thanksgiving boxes they will be offering, a Canadian AKA mangiacake and the Italian thanksgiving box. We dive into Gabe and find out the he is the only one in North America with a salumificio certification. As Rosie shares with us, if you look at anything significant in your life it stems around a table of food, food and construction are very important. Don’t take your lunches for granted.

Nobody plans their day in hopes of getting injured on the job. What safety hazards commonly shut down jobsites or create injuries? What’s the deal with PPE and Fall Protection? What could the Ministry of Labour look for if they paid your work a surprise visit?
Hear our interesting hard facts about jobsite safety, and some of the very reasonable cost & time saving solutions that are overlooked.
We talked about all this – and a lot more – with the folks at Brafasco. Brafasco works directly with trades and companies of all sizes, alongside sourcing product directly from manufacturers for all kinds of jobs across Canada. Too often, many people believe an injury won’t happen to them on the job – or you won’t get injured by someone else…Brafasco fights to make that a reality each day with end users, but it only happens with proper education and awareness!

Jim Caruk is my co-host of a newly formed The Construction Life 2.0 where Jim and Manny will be speaking to more people that are passionate about construction. On today’s show we are speaking with Rob Renna about his recently completed project from Caruk Hall Construction. Rob tells the whole truth about working with Jim, why he and his wife went with Jim and his team and how Jim finished the project on time and under budget. The show opens with a great intro by Rob and a lot of food, as Rob says, you can’t go to an Italians home and not eat and drink wine. It isn’t all that often you get a chance to hear a client speak candidly about the process of construction, this is a great show where we get great insight into what clients go through.
Thank you so much Rob for joining the show and sharing your amazing story and more. You can find Jim @jimcaruk and @carukhallconstruction www.carukhall.com [email protected] 416 546-8602
