The Coronavirus Crisis – How Testing Can Be the Holy Grail if Regulators Get out of the Way (Guest: Roger Klein, M.D., J.D.)

Listen Later

Roger Klein describes how testing, if it rolled out quickly, could have possibly avoided the heavy-handed approach the nation is taking to mitigate coronavirus. Klein was pulled into the issue weeks ago as a consultant and Yale trained expert in clinical pathology and saw first-hand the regulatory obstacles created by FDA and CDC. Now that more wide scale testing is underway, Klein discusses how results can answer numerous questions about how the virus spreads so we can design more targeted strategies in controlling it.

 Klein explains:

1.     Why online testing trackers are showing a large percentage of tests are coming up negative

2.     “Stealth carriers,” those who can spread the virus but show no symptoms of disease

3.     The huge potential for anti-body testing

4.     The “bazooka” approach, mass shutdowns, for mitigating spread of the virus

5.     Where testing stands today

6.     Pros and cons of universal testing

7.     Costs of testing

8.     False results of testing

9.     Treatments and the FDAs roll

10.  How the goal should be is to manage it, like flu,

Klein called the initial rollout of testing a disaster in which he states had regulators at the FDA and CDC not gotten in the way, the nation could have gotten a jump start on controlling the virus.
