He's also published monographs on the 1919 racial cleansing in Elaine, Arkansas. We'll discuss his 2021 publication, American Atrocity: The Types of Violence in Lynching. Lancaster analyzes White Terrorism in Arkansas specifically and specifies how lynchings and White Mob Violence was the product of the entire White collective. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the debut study session on Ernest Tidyman's 1970 novel, SHAFT. Tidyman is a White man. He forged a distinguished journalism career working for The New York Times and Ohio's The Plain Dealer. In the midst of the so called Civil Rights Movement and the unrest of the 1960's, Tidyman decided to concoct a narrative around a black private detective named John SHAFT. This relatively short book sparked a half century of trashy films and mightily influenced the thoughts, speech, action, emotions, and wardrobe of generations of black people. Most of these victims are clueless that there favorite black action hero is the creation of a White man. Gus is excited to closely scrutinize a work that depicts SHAFT as a "bi-sexual" Vietnam veteran out to stick it to "The Man." The film adaptation of Tidyman's work is also a spectacular illustration of Racial Showcasing. The director was Gordan Parks, Richard Roundtree starred in the film, and Isaac Hayes' legendary soundtrack remains beloved and recognized a half century later. Hayes owns an Academy Award for his contributions to SHAFT. This franchise of films, along with the late Melvin Van Peebles, is credited with introducing the era of "Blaxploitation" films - cheaply made movies, bloated with crime and gratuitous sexual content, featuring mostly black characters. The self-proclaimed "pied piper of R&B" R. Kelly was found guilty on charges of racketeering, sexual exploitation of a child and other lurid sex crimes. He scheduled for sentencing in May of this year, and numerous legal experts suspect Kelly, 54, will die in greater confinement. As opposed to connecting this case to Simone Biles's abuse at the hands of Larry Nassar, the defunct Boy Scouts of America, or the countless other examples of children being de-valued and sexually exploited, this case was generally isolated as a "victory" for black "girls and women," and/or an example of the disregard for black females. When not bashing R. Kelly, mainstream news outlets paused briefly to excoriate a small number of black male NBA players who've hesitated to receive vaccinations. One of the most critically revered movie-makers of all time, Woody Allen is a New York City and entertainment icon. In addition to his flicks, he's an acclaimed comedian, a concert-playing musician, and bestselling author - Apropos of Nothing being his most recent text. Published in 2020, the book recounts his life, entertainment career, and "romance" with Soon-Yi Previn. In addition to being non-white, adopted/abducted from Korea, Previn is thirty-five years younger than Allen. Despite a damning Child Protective Services investigation and years of allegations of child rape and sexual abuse of children, Allen remains beloved my hoards of Whites. We'll examine this work for what it reveals about White culture. During our last reading, Allen explains how he hired a black male, the late Geoffrey Holder. Allen explained that his film required an "exotic" element, and Holder fit the bill. Tellingly, this 1972 film is: Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex, But Were Afraid To Ask. When not making films, Allen describes going on a musical tour, where he "steals" from the same black New Orleans jazz legends he previously branded as "primitive" When not making films for Whites, Allen confesses one of his top enjoyments was being home to "fondle" Soon-Yi. In spite of this, Allen acknowledges officers accorded him substantially more courtesy than the typical treatment of black male criminal suspects. Allen's narcissism and egoism drip from each sentence. He describes weeping fathers who're struggling with divorce and limited visitation with their children. They seek out Allen for sympathy or perhaps a teaspoon of Hollywood privilege to help their case. Allen sees no commonality around fatherhood with these New York dads.
