  • [211] Selling via subscription & my Earring-of-the-Month Club story

    Have you ever considered selling your products via subscription?

    I have done just that – many years ago, I ran an Earring-of-the-Month Club, which was quite successful.

    Customers could sign up for a monthly subscription, or they could buy 3, 6, or 12 month subscriptions (which made great gifts!).

    In this episode, I tell the story of why I started the club, how I ran it, and why I eventually wound it up.

    I also outline some reasons why you might like to consider offering some form of subscription for your own products, and how to go about doing so!

    This is a premium episode, available only to members of the Thriver Circle.

    You’ll be able to get access to the FULL episode, as well as ALL past premium episodes when you become a member.

    • [210] 6 years, 12 employees, and $1 mil revenue… the inspirational story of Popov Leather.
      Imagine starting a business because you just wanted to make yourself the perfect wallet… and then looking back 6 years later to discover that you’ve got 12 employees, 2 children, and over a million dollars in revenue?

       That’s the position that my guest today – Ryan Popov – finds himself in – and as he stated himself in the podcast, he never dreamt he’d be where he is today when he was perfecting that wallet for himself 6 years ago.

      His business has been incredibly successful in a relatively short timeframe, and in this episode he shares:

      • how (and why) his business has grown so quickly;
      • how he and his wife (who is equal partner) balance work and family;
      • the differences between selling on Etsy and on his own website;
      • how he and his wife took the leap from being employed to full-time self-employment;
      • the marketing strategies that have worked for him, and much more.
      •  I had so much fun chatting to Ryan for this episode – he’s clearly passionate about his craft, and about his business, and I hope you enjoy listening to his story as much as I did!

        • Highlights from this episode:
          1. Ryan began leatherworking to create a perfect wallet for himself. After seeing his finished wallet, his now-wife Jill recommended he make a few more and add these to Etsy and they sold well.
          2. Popov Leather’s sales are slowing on Etsy but are significantly growing up on their own site with the business grossing more than $1 million dollars last year.
          3.  “You get to a certain point when you are selling on Etsy where you have to decide if you want to run a business and make some serious money or if you want to stay crafting” {Ryan}
          4. As business grows the roles you fill within it will shift.
          5. “That (creativity) sort of disappears when you have 100 orders in the queue and you are working like crazy to get things done.” {Ryan} 10:10
          6. With their first child due, Ryan and Jill made the choice to hire their first employee and Ryan quickly realised that more could get done if there were more hands on deck.
          7. “Everything that goes out that door is a representation of everything that you stand behind and it’s that first impression customers have when they feel your product” {Ryan}
          8. There are now 12 full time employees including team members who specialise in customer service and shipping.
          9. “You can’t have people care about your business as you do but I feel like we’ve gotten to the point where everyone does care a lot. And 90% is good enough” {Ryan}
          10. Sometimes you need to break up with customers when you are unable to meet their requirements.
          11.  “There is not one magic bullet to increase sales. It is a combination of a lot of little efforts” {Ryan}
          12. Instagram photos is a big impact for little effort. Great Instagram images can build your story, encourage people to investigate your brand more and can be repurposed elsewhere in your business yo.
          13. When you run an online business your photos need to create the feeling of walking up to your product in-person and picking it up.
          14. “Photography is the key to successfully selling online” {Jess}
          15. Share the story of you and your brand. People want to know the story behind the product and connect with you.

            • Highlights from this episode:
              1. Accept that you’ll be busy, but that there is an end date! Yes, you’ll be working long hours, and it might get overwhelming, but it won’t last forever – and think of the money!
              2. Schedule some downtime after the busy season has passed – even if it’s just 1 day to yourself. It’s something for you to look forward to. A massage, weekend away, or just a day by yourself reading a book or at the beach (or the slopes!).
              3. Keep an exercise schedule! The busier and more stressed you are, the MORE important this is, not less. 20 min a day, heart-rate-elevating exercise. This can be as simple as a walk, and will act as a brain break, too.
              4. Do a stocktake now and make sure you have enough materials in stock and packing stock!
              5. Use the pomodoro technique.
              6. Don’t make promises to customers you can’t keep (set expectations) – it’s better to lose a customer than not deliver something on time – especially over Christmas! Remember it’s not your fault if someone didn’t get organised early enough – don’t take on the guilt.
              7. Set cut-off times, and stick to them!
              8. Turn off your phone notifications – schedule in time to deal with messages/emails
              9. Don’t over-commit (business or personal)
              10. Get help if you need it (with packing, promotion, emails etc – or with cleaning or childcare). Think about local teenagers – hire them now school is over (in Oz).
              11. Drink enough water, not just coffee! Especially for those of you in cold climates, it can be easy to forget. And keep eating good food, too – try to avoid binging on the unhealthy stuff (save the binge for the holiday meals!)
              12. Do your own shopping now, before the super-busy season hits.
              13. Carve out designated work time.
              14. Educate your family and friends that you’re not as available as normal.
              15. Pre-make any stock you can now!
              16. Schedule any marketing (social media, emails etc) as early as possible so you’re not worrying about it during the busiest part of the season.

                • [208] How to deal with unhappy customers (Redux)
                  It can feel like the worst thing in the world to have an unhappy customer.

                  And I get it, I’ve been there – it’s almost impossible to not take it personally, especially the first time it happens to you in your business journey.

                  The fact is: it’s inevitable that at some stage in your business you will have an unhappy customer.

                  The old saying ‘you can’t please 100% of the people 100% of the time’ holds true for every business, no matter how hard you try or how awesome you are (and I know you’re awesome!).

                  You can’t live in fear of it happening though! You must contemplate in advance that it is going to happen one day, and rather than stick your head in the sand, be aware and realistic, and ensure you are prepared to deal with an unhappy customer when the time comes.

                  The truth is: sometimes things go wrong. Sometimes you will stuff up. Sometimes it will be out of your control. Sometimes you will be able to turn it around… and sometimes you won’t.

                  No matter the situation, this episode outlines some ways you can be prepared and ensure you manage the situation effectively: with compassion, rationality, humility, honestly, and grace.

                  This is a re-broadcast of episode 82.

                  • Quotes and highlights from this Episode:
                    • An unhappy customer can express themselves either publicly or privately.
                    • A private conversation is preferred but often an upset customer will leave public feedback or a bad review – it’s best if you can avoid this, for obvious reasons!
                    • There can be so many reasons why people are unhappy. Sometimes it is their fault, sometimes it is yours, and sometimes it is out of both your hands. Whatever the case may be, always approach the situation calmly and be polite, helpful and upbeat.
                    • ‘You can’t control how people are going to respond, and you can’t control people’s emotions’. {Jess}
                    • First up, don’t panic!
                    • If this is the first or second time it has happened it is hard not to panic.
                    • Don’t ever respond to a customer in the heat of the moment.
                    • If you have someone you trust it can be a good idea to share with them. Two heads are better than one.
                    • Be the bigger person
                    • Approach the issue from a place of calm rationality.
                    • ‘Don’t get caught in the drama’. {Jess}
                    • Think logically and rationally and try and be compassionate to your customer.
                    • ‘Really try to put yourself in your customer’s shoes as much as you possibly can’. {Jess}
                    • Try and work out the underlying reason the customer is upset – often it is not initially clear.
                    • Admit your mistakes
                    • If you have made a mistake you need to fix it.
                    • ‘Own it, fix it, and then move on’ {Jess}
                    • Learn from the issues that arise
                    • You need to fix the part of the system that is broken so that the same thing never happens again.
                    • Stick to your policies and don’t be held ransom
                    • If you have not made a mistake and something has gone wrong don’t feel like you’re held ransom by the possibility of a bad review.
                    • Your policies should outline all information your customer needs to know so that there are no surprises and you are covered.
                    • Always be understanding and kind even if you have not made the error.
                    • ‘Think of a way to respond that is empathetic and understanding’ {Jess}
                    • If you follow all of the steps you will hopefully be able to turn an unhappy customer into a satisfied or even a happier customer.

                          • [205] How to choose the right platform for your handmade website & shop.

                            Etsy, Shopify, WordPress – oh my! How do you choose the right platform for your handmade shop & website?

                            There is no one-size-fits-all solution to this question – but in this podcast episode, I do my best to lay out all of the things you need to consider when making the decision.

                            I outline 15 different aspects to consider – things like price, security, design & much more!

                            I also discuss the difference between selling on a marketplace (like Etsy, Amazon, Ebay) versus selling on a stand-alone website (like Squarespace, Wix, or Shopify). AND – why you might want to do both.

                            If you are just getting started, my usual recommendation is to begin with an Etsy shop – but that shouldn’t be the be-all and end-all of your online presence – and I outline why that is in this episode, too.

                            If you’ve been wanting to set up shop online, but don’t know where to start, this episode will steer you in the right direction – as will my course, Set Up Shop, which is open for registration right now – and class starts October 14, 2019!

                            Do you want to learn how to set up your own online craft shop and get it right, first time?

                            Want access to a proven system that over 1,000 makers have used to set up a stellar online shop?

                            • #MakingItPodcourse – Week 4 – BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
                              Welcome to the Making It Podcourse!

                              It’s back! Those of you who are long-time listeners to the show may remember the original Making It Podcourse I ran in July 2018.

                              Well, I’ve re-organised the lessons, and am bringing this free course to you again in September 2019 – but this time, in weekly chunks.

                              Each episode will be approximately an hour long, packed full of lessons.

                              Today is the fourth and final week of the course, and in it, I talk about all things business management.

                              I’m going to cover managing a whole range of things – your focus, your energy, your expectations, your business systems, your time, and your schedule. Some of those might seem like somewhat of a surprise, but I promise you – managing all of them well is the only way to ensure everything flows smoothly in your business.

                              In September I’ll be releasing an episode once per week, via the Create & Thrive Podcast – on the topics of mindset, money, marketing, and business management.

                              I’ve created this FREE course specifically for makers – those who create handmade goods to sell.

                              To create this course, I’ve drawn on my 10 years of experience running my own successful handmade business, coupled with over 6 years of teaching other makers about handmade business right here at Create & Thrive.

                              I wanted to create something that was actionable and practical for all makers, no matter what stage of business you are at: and that would allow you to dig deep into 4 key aspects of the crafty biz journey.

                              I hope it helps your handmade business to thrive!

                              If you want to take your learning to the next level, the course conversation is happening daily over in my private membership community for makers – the Thriver Circle.

                              You can find out more about the oodles of benefits of membership right here. Membership will open again in late October, 2019.

                              • Making It Podcourse – Week 3 – MARKETING
                                Welcome to the Making It Podcourse!

                                It’s back! Those of you who are long-time listeners to the show may remember the original Making It Podcourse I ran in July 2018.

                                Well, I’ve re-organised the lessons, and am bringing this free course to you again in September 2019 – but this time, in weekly chunks.

                                Each episode will be approximately an hour long, packed full of lessons.

                                Today is the third week of the course, and in it, I talk about all things marketing.

                                What exactly IS marketing? Why does it matter? What is your Brand Story and how should you tell it? What is visual marketing? What is SEO and why does it matter? I’ll also discuss how to use social media, a mailing list, and more.
