  • Making It Podcourse – Week 1 – MINDSET

    Welcome to the Making It Podcourse!

    It’s back! Those of you who are long-time listeners to the show may remember the original Making It Podcourse I ran in July 2018.

    Well, I’ve re-organised the lessons, and am bringing this free course to you again in September 2019 – but this time, in weekly chunks.

    Each episode will be approximately an hour long, packed full of lessons.

    Today is the first week of the course, and in it, I tell you what to expect, as well as sharing a little bit of my own story for those of you who don’t know me.

    Over the next four weeks, I’ll be releasing an episode once per week, via the Create & Thrive Podcast – on the topics of mindset, money, marketing, and business management.

    I’ve created this FREE course specifically for makers – those who create handmade goods to sell.

    To create this course, I’ve drawn on my 10 years of experience running my own successful handmade business, coupled with over 6 years of teaching other makers about handmade business right here at Create & Thrive.

    I wanted to create something that was actionable and practical for all makers, no matter what stage of business you are at: and that would allow you to dig deep into 4 key aspects of the crafty biz journey.

    I hope it helps your handmade business to thrive!

    If you want to take your learning to the next level, the course conversation is happening daily over in my private membership community for makers – the Thriver Circle.

    You can find out more about the oodles of benefits of membership right here. Membership will open on September 16th, 2019.

    • [204] Grow your Handmade Biz via YouTube with Patrick Adair
      Have you ever thought of using YouTube to grow your handmade business?

      My guest this week has done that – and in spectacular fashion.

      Patrick Adair has grown a 7-figure jewellery business and a 6-figure supplies business over a few short years by leveraging the power of YouTube.

      Patrick is in his early 20s, and as a digital native, saw the power and potential of YouTube very early on – having experimented with other channels throughout his teens.

      He publishes regular, detailed videos showing him creating a unique ring design – many of which go on to be sold in his shop. As of publishing this episode, he has over 660,000 subscribers on YouTube (and over 100,000 subscribers on Instagram).

      If you’ve never thought about using YouTube to grow your handmade biz – or if you have, but have questions about how to best make it work for you – don’t miss this detailed episode!

        • Quotes and highlights from this episode:

          • Patrick’s business began with a Kickstarter campaign to create carbon fibre rings. From there he was able to buy supplies and grow his business.
          • Patrick started filming the production of his rings to share on YouTube and Instagram and has cultivated a significant following.
          • He would make a post for a custom ring made of their winners’ selection of materials, with the price starting at $1 including shipping. To begin with this was costing him money.
          • “You make a website, you put a ring on there for $300 and you’ll go a full year before someone randomly decides to place an order. You have to do whatever you can to get people ordering” {Patrick}
          • Patrick has found he has two main audiences—those who enjoy watching the process of making the rings and those who would like to buy them.
          • “By showing people how to make it you are not going to have people not buy your ring and make it instead” {Patrick}
          • To serve both audiences, Patrick sells both the rings and the supplies to make the rings.
          • YouTube can be a very powerful way to build an audience.
          • “A lot of social media can be hard to grow organically. With YouTube there is an algorithm side to it that can help you grow like crazy” {Patrick}
          • Focus on getting the initial 1000-2000 followers for YouTube as it becomes much easier to grow from there. If you have another social media audience, cross promote to YouTube.
          • “Make good content. Bring people to it. It’s the key” {Jess}

          • [203] Emails that Get Attention with Katie Salmon

            You’ve heard you should be using email to market your handmade business – but how do you get people to open – and act on – your emails?

            My guest on this episode – Katie Salmon – is a self-proclaimed marketing geek and spends her days dreaming about how to help business owners sell more stuff. Since 2016, she’s been serving clients through her boutique marketing agency Katie Does Marketing, where she has helped shop owners turn email marketing into a lucrative sales channel.

            But Katie knows that not all businesses are ready to outsource their marketing, so this year, she co-founded Shop Pop, a one-stop resource center with marketing education and templates. Through Shop Pop, Katie hopes to help shop owners get the skills and confidence they need to do better their marketing in less time.

            In this episode we discuss:

            • Why email is more effective than social media to get sales;
            • How to create a subject line that gets people to open your emails;
            • How to best design an email to get people’s attention;
            • Why you need to design for mobile;
            • The importance of a clear call to action – and more!

              • Quotes and highlights from this episode:

                • You can have fun and be creative with your marketing.
                • “If you’re not on social media how will people know you exist” {Katie}
                • Someone is three times more likely to see your email than see your social media post.
                •  “People are more receptive to sales messages from email than from social media” {Katie}
                • The subject line is the gatekeeper of your email – if it is not engaging it will be deleted.
                • Keep your subject line short at ideally 40 characters or less. This ensures it is not cut off on a mobile device.
                • Create intrigue in your subject line by using power words such as “limited edition” and “last call”.
                • Experiment with your subject lines and see what works for your audience.
                • “You can read blog posts and look at studies but your audience is your audience and it is important to take an investigative approach with email marketing” {Katie}
                • As makers, it is powerful to begin your emails with an image.
                • Critically look at the email marketing you always open. What common elements capture your attention?
                • “The number one thing you need to think of is how is this going to look on someone’s tiny phone” {Katie}
                • Ensure your email has clear calls to action throughout as readers often do not make it to the end.
                • In your email focus on why you believe in your product, how it is thoughtfully designed to serve clients and how it will make people’s lives better.
                • “It won’t seem like selling, it will feel like service” {Katie}
                • Cultivate a healthy and engaged subscriber list.
                • It is common that the large your list and the longer your list the lower your open rate.
                • “Email marketing is something that you commit to and takes time to see results” {Katie}
                • There are no quick results with marketing – you will need to take time to build relationships and see results.

                • [202] How & Why to Document your Business Systems
                  How often do you find yourself doing a repetitive task in your business, and thinking… ‘what’s the next step again?’

                  Do you find you leave out/forget important steps in the process?

                  Do you get the same questions from customers over and over again, and have to write out the same answer multiple times?

                  Do you make mistakes (hello, sending the wrong order to the wrong person *cringe*) and have to deal with the unpleasant consequences (P.S. I have TOTALLY done this – do not recommend).

                  A LOT of the work we do in business is repetitive. And we can speed things up, reduce errors, cut down the mental load, AND make it easier to teach others how to help us if we properly document our business systems.

                  In this premium episode I’m going to:

                  • give examples of some of the (many!) systems in your biz that you can document (some of which you’ve probably never considered);
                  • outline the numerous reasons why you should take a little time to document these systems as you go; and,
                  • give you a whoooole bunch of ways you can document these systems.
                  • This is a premium episode, available only to members of the Thriver Circle. If you want the whole episode, you’re in luck – membership is opening on August 19 for just a few days! So you’ll be able to get access to the FULL episode, as well as ALL past premium episodes when you become a member.

                      You know I’m all about no-nonsense advice about growing a creative business – and my guest today is aaaaall about that.

                      Heidi Luerra is the founder and force behind RAW artist showcases, which she founded in LA 10 years ago.

                      She’s also the author of the upcoming book The Work of Art: A No-Nonsense Field Guide for Creative Entrepreneurs.

                      In this interview, she describes how RAW came to be (and her background as a fashion designer); how she’s grown it into a global organisation; and she shares some tips from her book on how you can be more successful as a creative entrepreneur.

                        • Heidi started in fashion and design and after crossing paths with a variety of creatives over the years coordinated a showcase featuring fashion, art and music.
                        • The event was so successful that Heidi shifted her focus into further developing these showcases which lead to the development of RAW artists.
                        •  “You can network all day on social media but there is nothing like in person communication and exchange” {Heidi}
                        • With RAW showcases, rather than pay a booth fee, artists sell tickets to cover costs.
                        • This crowdfunding-type model can open up opportunities for creatives who may not otherwise be able to afford to pay gallery or showcase booth fees.
                        • “There has never been a better time to be a creative entrepreneur—you have the world at your fingertips” {Heidi}
                        • “A common mistake many artists make is at the first sign of success they quit their day job and could possibly put themselves in a precarious situation” {Heidi}
                        • There are ebbs and flows throughout your creative career and there will be times when it feels like your creativity and drive are exhausted.

                          Have you ever wanted to hear the other side of the story?

                          What’s it like to be the partner of a creative entrepreneur?

                          What’s it like working full-time with your spouse in your business?

                          Who does the washing? (Spoiler: not Jess.)

                          We answer all these questions and more in this special, 200th episode of the Create & Thrive Podcast, where I interview my husband and right-hand-man, Nick Bianchi, on the show!

                          I did a call-out for questions… and boy, did you all deliver! So I asked, he answered, and we bantered about our experience working together and sharing all aspects of our lives over the last decade – since before Epheriell even began.

                          We had a lot of fun recording this, so I hope you enjoy listening to Nick’s experiences, and this glimpse ‘behind the curtain’ of a self-employed couple.

                            • Nick has been with Jess since before the beginning of her different creative businesses.
                            • As Jess started her business, Nick kept the household side of things running.
                            • Over time, Nick started picking up some of the support and administrative tasks.
                            • “We do what we do to enjoy our lifestyle.” {Nick}
                            • Nick started developing skills in jewellery making – starting with prepping earrings and from there taking on more and more jewellery making tasks. This frees up time and energy for Jess to focus on the creative side of the business.
                            • “The business and the rest of our lives are not really separate.” {Jess}
                            • Jess and Nick have set work hours, tasks and routines.
                            • Separate offices and workshops mean that while they are both in the same vicinity they are not up in each other’s space all the time.
                            • “It’s not a stress to talk about work outside of work because it’s our business.” {Nick}
                            •  Nick and Jess have complementary skill sets. Jess focuses on creative pursuits and Nick focuses on admin and household.
                            • Getting Jess to handover tasks to Nick can be challenging. Once the task has been handed over it frees up lots of mental space for Jess.

                              • [199] 5 Ways to Find Shops to Stock your Handmade Products
                                So you want to get your handmade products into shops, galleries, or boutiques… BUT – how do you find the right ones to approach?

                                There are a ton of ways to do this – many of which we teach in my newly available course – Wholesale Know-How – but in this episode, I’m outlining just 5 of the strategies you can use to track down potential new stockists who would be a perfect fit for your product.

                                It’s important to get this step right, so you don’t waste time approaching the wrong type of stores. Of course, not every store you approach will say yes (even if you are a perfect fit!) but you vastly increase the likelihood of a store buying from you if you do the research and hard yards beforehand to make sure they’re a great fit.

                                Do you dream of walking into your favourite boutique or gallery store, and seeing your beautiful creations on the shelves?

                                Do you love the idea of just making, and letting someone else do the ‘selling’ for you?

                                Do you want to get your work out into the world, because you know people will fall in love with it if they could just see it right in front of them?

                                Then selling wholesale is the perfect choice for you!

                                The self-study course – Wholesale Know-How – will show you EXACTLY how to make that happen.

                                  • So, how can you find stockists? I share 5 ways in this episode, including:
                                  • Using a wholesale agent, and the pros and cons of this (sharing my own experience), and
                                  • Asking friends and family who fit your ideal customer profile to tell you about places in their local area + more!

                                      Do you struggle to set boundaries in your handmade biz?

                                      Maybe you feel like you have to respond to every email or message RIGHT NOW.

                                      Perhaps you feel like you should ALWAYS be working.

                                      Maybe you struggle to focus when there are chores catching your eye around the house.

                                      Or do you find it hard to say ‘no’ to family and friends when they want your attention during what should be work time?

                                      In this episode, I go into detail about all the different sorts of boundaries you need to set in your handmade business – around your time, your privacy, and much more.

                                      I share a few challenges I’ve faced over the years to set boundaries (and why I took Facebook off my phone…), and share many tips about why boundaries matter, and how you can set and enforce them.

                                        I can’t count the number of projects I’ve never started, or not done properly, or been up at all hours trying to finish by a deadline!

                                        Why does this happen?!

                                        Because we don’t project manage properly, that’s why.

                                        Today’s guest is here to save us from all of that! Kate Hutcheson of the Efficient/Creative has turned her years of project management experience to helping creatives like you and me work out how to get big things done.

                                        She outlines a super-simple method for you to follow in order to plan and execute your next project… properly!

                                          • It is possible to be creative and organised by using project planning.
                                          • When working on a project, you can reach a point of resistance when a task becomes challenging or you don’t know what to do next.
                                          • Project management assists in combatting resistance.
                                          • To begin, write down the tasks that have to be done to reach your goal.
                                          • Making decisions are actions so include these in your brain dump of tasks. Not making decisions halts your project and creates resistance.
                                          • “You see the decisions you have to make as actions you have to take” {Kate}
                                          • Making a decision that is good enough for now is better than waiting to make a perfect decision. You can always change your mind or refine your decision later.
                                          • After completing your brain dump, take all of your tasks and shuffle them around to create a rough chronological order.
                                          • As you order tasks it is likely you will identify other tasks that are missing. Add these in.
                                          • After you have all your tasks ordered, estimate time for each task.
                                          • “People have a tendency to under estimate the amount of time tasks will take them” {Kate}
                                          • Be realistic with your time and include a buffer. This is especially relevant if it is something you have never done before, something you are not very familiar with or something you hate doing.
                                          • Now you have your plan keep it somewhere handy where you can see it all the time.
                                          • “Mark your progress as you go so you get those little wins” {Kate}
                                          • If you get stuck on a step, break it down even further until there is a small enough task that you are confident you can complete.
                                          • “If you are creative and scatter brained all is not lost. You can be organised and creative!” {Kate}

                                          • [196] Why you should (maybe) keep you day job.
                                            Can you be ‘successful’ in handmade business AND have a day job?

                                            The question of ‘should I quit my job?’ is not an uncommon one.

                                            Answering this question is a tad tricky as there are variables, and the answer will be different for different people.

                                            However, there are three points that are key to remember as you ponder this.

                                            • One, there is no rush! Don’t just quit rashly and end up regretting it.
                                            • Two, you can hold a day job and run a successful business.
                                            • Tnd three, perhaps most important, do not compare yourself to anyone else! You can be a successful handmade business owner AND hold down a day job – the two are not mutually exclusive.
                                            • In this episode I cover a number of key points that you need to consider before you chuck in the day job.

                                                • Building a business is not going to happen overnight.
                                                • It takes time to develop a business.  You must work hard and be dedicated.  The growth will happen over time.
                                                • Set goals for yourself.  Allow wanting to quit your day job be the driving force behind the energy you put into your business.
                                                • We all have life essentials, such as food, rent/mortgage, and medical expenses and those MUST get taken care of.  Having a job to provide is something we all must do.
                                                • You don’t need to go the all or nothing route.  Think in steps.
                                                • Can you switch your day job from full-time to part-time?
                                                • TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!
                                                • You don’t know if a business will be a success until you try it.
                                                • Having your day job during these early stages offers support.
                                                • Consider if you even want to run your business full-time.
                                                • There is nothing wrong with having multiple sources of income.
                                                • ‘Success is whatever it means to you, there is no right or wrong here.’ {Jess}
                                                • Having a day job also allows you the opportunity for your business to gain momentum.
                                                • Again, things take time to grow.
                                                • Grow a customer base before you dive in completely.
                                                • Also, you absolutely must build a safety net in the form of a savings account.
                                                • Have at least 3-6 months of expenses saved and stored in an account you can’t be tempted to touch.
                                                • Consider Parkinson’s Law, ‘work expands so as to fill the time available.’
                                                • If you do your business say in the two hours after your day job, you will be ultra focused to get your work done.
                                                • If you quit your day job and have all the time, you may lose productivity.
                                                • Ultimately, do what is best for you!
                                                • But be smart, consider if your business can support you, do you have a back up line, what is your safety net?
