  • [221] What’s the point of your biz – and why should people care?

    So often when we think of branding, we only think of colours, fonts, logo. It’s so much more than that.

     You’ve got to start from the foundations of your biz.

    Ask yourself these 2 questions:

    • What is it all about?
    • Why should anyone care?
    • In this video, I talk about the process of examining (and building) strong foundations for your business, so that you can answer the questions above – and so you can use this knowledge to help you with the more superficial aspects of business branding.

      You can listen to this podcast below, or on your fave podcast app – or you can watch it on youtube!

      Brand your CraftDoes your handmade business have a strong brand identity?

      Or are you just treating your creations like commodities – trying to compete on price, and failing to stand out in a crowded marketplace?

      Creating a strong, unique brand identity is fundamentally important if you want to make your business stand out from the others in your niche.

          • [220] Weaving a Business with Jen Duffin of Nova Mercury

            In just 3 years, Jen Duffin from Nova Mercury has built a thriving weaving business, and a thriving Instagram following.

            I love her bright, colourful, organic style, and when I discovered her on Instagram, I knew immediately that I wanted to chat to her on the show!

            Jen has over 81k followers on Instagram, as well as a super-successful Etsy shop – she was even nominated in the Etsy Design Awards.

            We had a fun, in-depth chat about why she started (by accident, and motivated by dealing with a chronic health issue) how she manages to run a business and raise 2 kids with a partner who travels a lot, why she diversified into both handmade and supplies, and we both agree about putting boundaries around your work – so you can enjoy your life.

            • Highlights from this episode:
              1. Jen got into macramé to make plant hangers for her house and did not start with an eye to creating a business.
              2. After the birth of her second child, Jen started selling her works and built her own business to work from home and have a flexible schedule.
              3. “Monetising your creativity is a tricky business” {Jen}
              4. Some of Jen’s favourite projects are where she collaborates with a client to decide on the colours and story of a work.
              5. Jen now provides kits and supplies in addition to her finished pieces.
              6. “I realised that I really like having the supplies to sell because it creates a revenue stream for me that’s not contingent on my creativity” [Jen]
              7. Jen finds Instagram is a very effective tool for her business and uses it in conjunction with Etsy to sell her pieces.
              8. “I build my Instagram time into my work day” {Jen}
              9. Jen is organised with her workday and works weekdays and while her children are at school.
              10. “I don’t think you should be on your phone or computer all day and not have access to having some downtime. That’s not good for anyone. {Jen}
              11. Building a business with an “always available” mindset is not sustainable and can lead to burnout.
              12. “I’ve been in business for almost 12 years now and I don’t answer emails on weekends. And my business is still fine.” {Jess}
              13.  “It’s fibre art, it’s not an emergency. I think people can wait a little bit and its okay” {Jen}
              14. To get the most out of Instagram educate yourself about how it works. Aim for engagement and people liking and commenting.
              15. Be consistent and post regularly on Instagram. Jen posts at the same time every day as part of her workday.
              16. “Learn to use stories to engage with your followers. If you are a maker or artisan or you have any kind of skill and you are willing to skill share even a little bit people love that and it’s a great way to get engagement.” {Jen}
              17. You don’t need a fancy camera to take great Instagram photos—Jen uses her phone.
              18. “Be dedicated and try not to be thrown off your path by either your successes or failures.” {Jen}
              19.

                There are endless challenges on the road to building a successful handmade business. But have you ever wondered if the biggest roadblock is actually… you?

                In this episode I talk about a number of the most common roadblocks to success – things like money, time, and knowledge – and how you might be self-sabotaging yourself via excuses – telling yourself you don’t have enough of any of the above… when in fact, you do.

                You might be surprised by how little you need to get started – and that if you just switch your perspective, it might be all that’s needed to move forward.

                • Highlights from this episode:

                  • Sure, confidence breeds success… but success can breed confidence, too.
                  • Think back to the last time you learnt something new. Did you feel trepidatious about it at first? When did that change? Probably the first time you got it RIGHT – and got a burst of confidence. Because if you can do it once, you can do it again, right?
                  • Most makers have never run a business before. They’re so afraid of not ‘doing it right’ that they never try at all.
                  • Envision yourself like a kid learning to walk. If they gave up after the first time they fell down, they’d never learn!
                  • Repeat after me – ‘I will fail. I will make mistakes. And that’s not only okay – it’s necessary’.
                  • Seriously. Mistakes and failures are an integral part of how we learn. It’s how you get feedback. It’s how a lesson sticks in your mind.
                  • Courage is feeling the fear and doing something anyway – not being free of fear.
                  • Courage is also like a muscle. The more you exercise it, the stronger it becomes.
                  • Stop looking outside of yourself for the confidence to start.
                  • Only you have the power to click that button and open your shop. No-one else is going to do it for you.
                  • Do some fear-setting (Tim ferris vid: https://youtu.be/5J6jAC6XxAI) “How can we overcome self-paralysis and take action? Tim Ferriss encourages us to fully envision and write down our fears in detail, in a simple but powerful exercise he calls “fear-setting.” Learn more about how this practice can help you thrive in high-stress environments and separate what you can control from what you cannot.”
                  • This is based on the stoic philosophy of ‘the circle of control’ – much like the Serenity Prayer “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.”
                  • Literally write down ALL your fears about what could go wrong. Everything from ‘my spouse might not take me seriously’ to ‘my business could cause us to lose our house’ – no matter how unlikely, if you have a fear lurking in your subconscious, this process will help you to bring it into the sunlight, where it can be properly examined.
                  • THEN, you can make a list of how to prevent these things. Or, failing that, how to repair the damage if it happens.
                  • THEN… you do another chart. What’s the cost of inaction in 3, 6, 12 months and beyond if you DON’T start?
                  • You’ll have your own things here, but one I can give you right now.
                  • Imagine you don’t start, and you stumble across this video/podcast again the same time next year – or even in 5 years time. And you’ve never even started?
                  • How would you feel?
                  • Now flip the script.
                  • Imagine you DO start. Today, this week, this month.
                  • Then you find this video in a year, 2 years, 5 years… how would you feel?
                  • Your answer will tell you which direction you need to go.

                  • [218] De-Risking the Move to Self-Employment with Matt Baker
                    Are you scared of making the leap to being self-employed?

                    There are a lot of risks and fears that we need to confront when we consider leaving a stable job to become self-employed – and these fears and risks will vary depending on your age, your location, and your financial situation.

                    But there are a number of hard and soft barriers to making the move that are pretty common across the board – things like not having the money to pay down debt or pay for training; not wanting to give up benefits (especially health insurance for you Americans); and fear of earning less, and having inconsistent income.

                    In this episode, I discuss those and a number of other challenges with Matt Baker from Freshbooks.

                    Freshbooks does a survey each year on self-employment in America – and we discuss the findings of that survey – specifically, the things people love about being self-employed, and how people who want to be self-employed and de-risk the move.

                    • Highlights from this episode:
                      1. Even if accounting is not your favourite aspect of business it is essential to keep an eye on your books.
                      2. “Having yourself a budget is really just setting some targets before reality happens and that way you can compare yourself to something” {Matt}
                      3. Freshbooks latest survey of self-employed professionals shows that 90% of respondents would not return to a traditional job in the wider workforce.
                      4. “Once you take on the mindset of I’m the owner, all of a sudden you feel in control. And sometimes people have more control over their regular job than they realise. It’s just a mindset” {Matt}
                      5. The survey revealed 63% of respondents think money is less important than quality of life.
                      6. “For a lot of small business owners personal and life is all intertwined” {Matt}
                      7. You have to start saving for taxes immediately and start preparing for the peaks and troughs of your income and expenses.
                      8. “Once you work for yourself your income is lumpy” {Matt}
                      9. Take the time and do the maths on your pricing—if you charge this much how many clients do you need to service to supply.
                      10. Think about how much money do you want to earn each year. How many of your products would you need to sell at the current price to make it feasible to have a profitable business?
                      11. “There is a tendency when you get started to really undervalue the work you do” {Matt}
                      12. A lot of makers forget to include overheads in establishing their product costs. Don’t forget to include electricity, mortgage, mailing lists and more.
                      13. Ensure you invest time and energy into caring for yourself. You are your greatest resource.
                      14. “It’s really important that you do take care of yourself from the beginning. If you fall down the business falls down.” {Jess}

                      16. [217] Finding the Confidence to Start Your Handmade Biz

                        So many makers let their lack of confidence hold them back from starting their business (or starting something new within their existing business).

                        There are many reasons to feel a lack of confidence – but while confidence breeds success… the inverse is also true.

                        By putting yourself out there, failing a LOT, and sometimes finding success, you’ll grow your knowledge, courage, and confidence.

                        Because success also breeds confidence!

                        The more little steps forward you can make, the easier the next steps will be.

                        In this episode I discuss a few techniques to overcome this lack of confidence, and move forward with your dream.

                          • [216] How to make your online jewellery biz thrive with Raphaela of Fifth Heaven Designs
                            In this episode I talk to a jeweller with a very similar ‘origin story’ to myself…

                            Raphaela of Fifth Heaven Designs started her business the way so many of us do – on the side, as a hobby.

                            Fast-forward about a decade, and she has an incredibly successful online jewellery business – and today we discuss exactly how she got from there to here.

                            Much like myself, Raphaela’s spouse also works with her in the business, and we talk a bit about the pros and cons of working with your partner, too.

                            Raphaela also discusses how an adult diagnoses of Aspergers has given her insight into her work patterns, and has helped her to create systems that work for her.

                            I adored chatting with her, and I hope you enjoy this interview!

                            • Highlights from this episode:
                              1. Whilst on medical leave from her administration job, Raphaela began her jewellery journey armed a book Soldering Made Simple, a crème brule blowtorch and a small collection of gemstones and metals.
                              2. Over the next few months, Raphaela began to sell her jewellery and slowly built her business into her primary income.
                              3. Jess and Raphaela both agree that economic uncertainty across Australia, and around the world, has made it more difficult to kick creative businesses off.
                              4. “It was a different world back then. There was a lot less competition. It’s a lot more challenging now. And a lot more people have woken up to the idea and having this crafty business on the side… It does make it a little more difficult for everybody on the whole.” {Jess}
                              5. While the rings Raphaela makes could be seen as fashion rings she consciously has marketed these as engagement rings and created a niche for her business.
                              6. “Two people might be making similar products but the way that you title it and market it and write about it can actually influence how people are finding you” {Jess}
                              7. “If you think that my stuff is not that unique think about how you can aim for a particular niche to help you be more successful” {Jess}
                              8. Raphaela works with her wife Jenna who manages marketing, web content and photography. They use Evernote on their phones to make sure they aren’t missing or doubling up on any tasks.
                              9. Raphaela was diagnosed with Asperger’s as an adult which has provided her with insight into her work patterns and styles.
                              10. “I’ll have a short playlist on my phone of music, it’ll be 30 minutes or so, and that’ll give me long enough to do the task and the music stops and I have to revaluate what to do next” {Raphaela}
                              11. “Being able to work from home and not having the stress of an outside employer—that is the most exciting thing to me” {Raphaela}
                              12. Raphaela’s business is solely online and made to order. By approaching business this way, she ensures her overheads remain low.

                              14. [215] Stop looking for the ‘secret of success’ in business – do this instead.

                                It’s time to STOP searching for ‘the secret to success’ in business!

                                So much marketing in the biz space tells you ‘this is the secret to success in….’

                                It’s rubbish. There is no such thing as a secret – only something you haven’t learnt yet.

                                I hate this language, because it couches knowledge as something only the select/elect few know, and that you must learn from them. It’s sleazy marketing language to sell you something.

                                And sure, I want to sell you something too (the Thriver Circle, my courses) but I try to be clear that I’m not offering a magic bullet or a secret formula – I’m simply aiming to teach you systems that will speed up your acquisition of knowledge and strategy.

                                I refuse to use this language of ‘secrecy’.

                                The truth is, if you keep at this biz game long enough, you’ll figure all this stuff out on your own eventually. You might even be the one who discovers an innovative solution to a problem!

                                So STOP searching for ‘the secret’ to anything – whether it be ‘more sales’ or ‘more traffic’ or ‘how to make a million dollars’.

                                  • Systems are the key!
                                  • Sure, it’s not sexy. In fact, it can be pretty damn boring.
                                  • BUT that is how you actually achieve success!
                                  • It’s not a big, flashy, sudden thing.
                                  • It’s the culmination of years of dedicated, consistent application of the fundamentals of business.
                                  • If you flip your mindset from ‘I just need to find the secret that will turn my business into an overnight success’ to ‘I just need to learn and implement the appropriate systems that will see my business steadily grow and flourish’ you’ll stop getting distracted by the newest shiny thing to come along, and instead, you’ll see REAL progress.
                                  • If you constantly jump around, trying new things, rather than consistently sticking to something that will work given the time to grow, you will find yourself frustrated and wondering ‘why isn’t anything working?!’
                                  • It’s not working because you’re not giving it the TIME to work!
                                  • It’s like planting a seed, watering it for a week, then completely neglecting it in favour of watering another seed… then another, and another. Of course none of them are going to grow, because you’re not giving them consistent attention and care!
                                  • But if you decide on a watering schedule, and stick it it… your seeds will flourish.
                                  • I’ve been running my handmade biz since 2008. Over this time I’ve developed a heap of systems to save time and help my business run smoothly.
                                  • There are ENDLESS systems you could develop for your business.
                                  • The key is finding the right ones that will work for you, your niche, your sales venue (online, markets, etc), your business goals.

                                  • [214] Finding success as a traditional brick & mortar jeweller with Shannon Cornish
                                    We talk a LOT about online business – but what about traditional brick & mortar maker business?

                                    My guest today is a traditionally trained jeweller with a successful small business in South Australia – Shannon Cornish.

                                    I’ve known Shannon online for a few years now (she’s a member of my Thriver Circle community) and I’ve always admired her beautiful work.

                                    In this episode, we talk about her journey to becoming a jeweller, opening her own B&M shop, taking on her own apprentice and staff jeweller, and how her business has become – and continues to be – a great success.

                                    • Highlights from this episode:
                                      1. Unlike a lot of creative entrepreneurs, Shannon’s business is run through a bricks and mortar store in the Adelaide Hills in Australia.
                                      2. Most of Shannon’s customers are local but she does have people travel from interstate or use email and Skype for design consults.
                                      3. After many years of opening the store seven days, it is now closed two days a week.
                                      4. “Working Sundays was lovely for the customer but exhausting for us” {Shannon}
                                      5. To keep up with orders and administration, Shannon has a small team including two jewellers (Josh and Ben), an administration assistant (Yvette) and a bead worker/designer (Skye).
                                      6. Not long after she opened, Shannon was approached by a high school student who had begun to teach himself jewellery making. Josh joined the team as a school-based apprentice and is now a qualified jeweller who runs jewellery making lessons in the shop.
                                      7. “We do compare our pricing structures so that its similar so people don’t look at a bangle I have made and say why is that is so different to the price of a bangle that Josh has made. We do try to make sure we’re pricing our work using a similar formula” {Shannon}
                                      8. Two of Shannon’s team are paid with wages and two are paid on consignment. She also provides perks and incentives to everyone throughout the year to share her appreciation.
                                      9. After five years of running her bricks and mortar store, Shannon established a website for the business. As she didn’t want to do this herself, Shannon outsourced the setup of her website and development of SEO which saved her time and frustration.
                                      10. 32:50 “If you are going to outsource someone, make sure it is the right person and it is working.” {Shannon}

                                      12. 35:24 “I struggle to define success. Because it’s not an end goal for me. It’s just a continual process” {Shannon}

                                            If you sell on Etsy, ranking highly in search is the holy grail!

                                             That’s why I am SO excited to bring this workshop to you today!

                                            Today’s podcast and video are a replay of a live workshop I gave in early November 2019 – in partnership with Etsy themselves.

                                            Yep, that’s right, I literally worked with Etsy to create this presentation – to make sure you have all the correct knowledge moving forward into growing your Etsy shop in 2020.

                                            So – don’t miss out on getting the right info on search direct from the source!

                                            And! I put together a downloadable cheat sheet with all the key takeaways from this workshop – make sure to get a hold of that, too.

                                            I hope this helps to clear up a few Etsy search myths, and gets you fired up to improve your Etsy SEO in 2020 and beyond.
