  • [195] The Challenges of Going from Job to Business with Katherine DaSilva

    At what point do you make the leap to quit your job and run your business full-time?

    For Katherine DaSilva, that point came not too long ago. Since then, she’s been running her business – The Handmaker’s Bag – full-time.

    In this episode we discuss how she made the decision to quit; the challenges of convincing family and friends that what she’s doing is a ‘real business’; some of the challenges that come along with having a boss telling you what to do – to being solely in charge of your time; the joys and freedom that comes from making the leap to be your own boss.

    Katherine is a member of the Thriver Circle – my private community for makers. Huge thanks to all the members of the Circle – without them, this podcast wouldn’t exist!

    • Quotes and highlights from this episode:
      •  After joining a local knitting group, Katherine started creating project bags for her knitting projects. Members of the group then started ordering their own bags from Katherine and orders continued by word of mouth.
      • These orders inspired Katherine to set up a Shopify store to sell her project bags online. Her store offerings expanded when she included a line of hand-dyed yarns developed by Katherine and her daughter.
      • Keeping focused and motivated when you work from home can be a challenge.
      • “If you don’t make yourself get up and do it, it won’t get done” {Katherine}
      • Katherine uses routines to focus her work hours including dedicated planning time each evening and set work hours in her studio.
      • “One of the key things I worked out early on is having a routine – if you leave it open ended it is a recipe for disaster” {Jess}
      • When Katherine was looking to leave her day job and take The Handmaker’s Bagfull time, she and her husband took time to scope out the different elements of this change including finances.
      • “I’d been selling these bags on the side but trying to take this to a fulltime business was really scary” {Katherine}
      • Katherine has found Instagram very helpful for growing her business. She uses it each day to engage with people to build relationships rather than simply to promote her business.
      • “There is no one right way to do it (use Instagram) – it’s what works for you and your audience” {Jess}
      • There will never be a perfect time to start on a new endeavour.

        Is your to-do list a hot mess?

        Do you find yourself wasting time because you don’t know what to focus on next?

        Do you over or underestimate the time tasks will take, and continually push things off your list to ‘get to later’?

        Do you feel like you’re on an endless treadmill – never moving forward, but sometimes even falling off the end?

        I know how that feels – and over the last 10 years, I’ve designed a planning system and organised to-do list that keeps me on task and – more importantly – sane.

        In this episode I outline my own day-to-day planning system, and share 6 tactics you can use to organise your epic to-do list into something that will help you move forward and feel accomplished at the end of the day/week.

        • [193] How Craft Saved SuzAnne Taylor’s Life
          I’m thankful to be able to share this story with you today – the story of how craft – specifically, jewellery-making and metalsmithing – helped SuzAnne Taylor to find new purpose in her life.

          SuzAnne was a combat medic in the US Army, and after a tour in the Middle East, returned home with a severe case of PTSD.

          I’ve known SuzAnne online for a few years now, but when I finally learnt the details of her story, I knew I wanted to bring her on the show to talk about her experience, and how finding a craft literally saved her life.

          This is an incredibly moving episode – SuzAnne is an open book and we dive deep into her experiences over the years since her tour of duty.

          I want to thank SuzAnne for sharing her experience with us – and sharing her journey towards healing.

          P.S. the Thriver Circle – my membership community & educational hub for makers – is open to new members right now – from June 13 to June 16 2019. Click here to find out more about how the Circle can help you grow your handmade biz… faster.

            • “Whether it is metalsmithing or basket weaving, art is healing and it definitely saves lives” {Suzanne}
            • SuzAnne was keen to learn more metalsmithing and jewellery making, however, a workshop triggered her PTSD.

                In 2016, Catie Miller started listening to the Create & Thrive Podcast.

                Fast-forward to 2019, and she now has a full-time, growing ceramics business! She listened to the show from the start, and used it as a ‘roadmap to success’.

                I was so excited to chat to someone like Catie who has actually used this podcast to find success in her handmade business – and she has a fabulous story to share!

                Not only has she managed to grow a thriving business – she’s done it all while having babies, building a house, moving studios… not to mention dealing with a broken kiln right when she had a big order to produce!

                Catie is a trained artist who chose to focus on ceramics as her canvas – though she’s done other artwork, too – including a large public piece in her hometown of Fargo.

                You’ll love this interview with Catie – she’s super down-to-earth, open and honest about the struggles of crafting a handmade business… don’t miss this one!

                • Quotes and highlights from this episode:

                  • Catie went to school to study art education and at the end of her degree applied for, and won, a two-year artist residency interstate.
                  • After her residency, she moved back home to Fargo, North Dakota and started working at a museum and selling her works on the side. After a year Catie made the decision to become pursue her art full time.
                  • “It always feels like now is the perfect time and then when you do it you think – why did I do this?!” {Catie}
                  • Finding the balance between making work that engages you and making a living can be a challenge.
                  • “I want to make work that excites me. I could make work that is quicker but I don’t do something I don’t love” {Catie}
                  • Consider strategic ways to preserve your creative energy and time. As her initial artistic work can be extremely time consuming, Catie has created a bank of designs that she is able to use across the different range of products she makes including plates, mugs and bowls.
                  • With wholesale designs, Catie streamlines her product range to best use her production time. For example, the design on mugs is limited to one colour.
                  • “I love the idea of my work outlasting me” {Jess}
                  • Invest time to build strong relationships with your customers. Catie develops strong engagement and community on Instagram by answering questions (no matter how repetitious they may be!) and replying to comments.
                  • “Set some time restraints for the work you are trying to do” {Catie}
                  • Don’t let the idea of perfection stop you from starting a task. Remember you can always come back to edit and refine!
                  • Catie’s current favourite quote – is this an opportunity or is this a distraction?

                            • [189] The Power of a Unique Brand – with Jill from For Strange Women

                              Jill from For Strange Women works with natural ingredients to make perfumes. Which she sells – with wild success – on the internet.

                              Jill started on Etsy in 2009, and today, she not only sells online, she also has her own store in downtown Kansas City. With over 35,000 sales in her Etsy shop alone, Jill’s business is incredibly successful – and all based on selling something – scent – that people can’t even smell until they’ve bought the product. Jill formulates all her perfumes, and even today, it’s just her and one assistant running the whole business.

                              So – how has she grown such a successful business? I believe it’s been via the power of her branding and storytelling – and the fact that she’s remained true to herself, even when she was surrounded with doubters.

                              In this episode, we discuss the importance of being true to you in your business, and the way Jill’s business has naturally grown to where it is today.

                              If you would like to hear a beautiful and peaceful approach to running a handmade business, don’t miss this one.

                                  What is it really like to own a brick & mortar retail boutique in the current economic climate?

                                  My guest today – Meg Sutton of Belle & Union – has an interesting business trajectory.

                                  She was working full-time, doing wedding invitations on the side… and then decided she wanted to launch her own business.

                                  Instead of just opening an online shop, she worked for a full year behind the scenes, then launched her business at a major trade show in the USA.

                                  It was a big success, and her business grew from there – to moving from strictly wholesale to also selling online – to now, where she has been running her own brick & mortar shop in San Antonio, Texas.

                                  In this episode, we discuss her journey, and the realities of owning a b&m business – the ups and the downs.

                                  If you’ve ever dreamt of opening your own shop (and let’s be honest – who hasn’t?!) don’t miss this episode.

                                    • Whilst many creative businesses start in retail then move into wholesale, Meg did things in reverse.
                                    • After attending a major trade show, she decided to go full time with her side hustle – Belle and Union. Meg spent the next year working on her collection and debuted at the same trade show the following year where she signed 50 accounts.
                                    • Throughout this time Meg – with help from her husband – was managing all aspects of the business including marketing and manufacture.
                                    • Over the next few years, Belle and Union continued to grow and Meg made the shift into online retail and then into a bricks and mortar store.
                                    • “I had seen a shift happening in the industry – so much of sales is now direct to the consumer” {Meg}
                                    • Between wholesale, online retail and a store Meg required additional support.
                                    • She recruited a store manager with extensive retail experience who takes point on the bricks and mortar shop and has additional support with some very part-time shop staff.
                                    • “So much of business is numbers and money… it’s not all just make things and be happy” {Meg}
                                    • With a retail store, the overheads for running the business has significantly increased.
                                    • “I have a vision I want to stick to but I can’t always afford that vision” {Meg}
                                    •  Getting people through the door and into your store is much harder than many people realise.
                                    • “Marketing is a constant grind – I don’t think you ever get to stop” {Meg}
                                    • Meg has found that creative time can get subsumed by all the aspects of running a business.
                                    • “You have to carve time into your calendar (for creative work) or otherwise it won’t get done. There is always another fire that needs to be put out” {Meg}

                                    • [187] Do the Work
                                      One of the most common laments I hear from my students is that ‘I’m not where I thought I’d be by now’.

                                      There are oodles of reasons this may be. Life happens.

                                      But one of the most common reasons is a lack of commitment and focus.

                                      If you don’t commit to carving out the time to do your work – and then actually doing it – you simply won’t move forward.

                                      Obligation, procrastination, lack of confidence – all of these things can get in the way of us actually doing the work. Goodness knows I’ve been there myself too many times to count.

                                      But the people who succeed… they’re the ones that show up, consistently – for years – and just do the work.

                                      Over, and over, and over again.
