NAIL YOUR CHARACTERS ON THE FIRST TRY

You don't want to write one extra draft only because you got your characters wrong on the first time. Especially for pantsers, but also for other writers, figuring out your characters prior to writing might just save you one draft worth of revising. Writing a book isn't easy, and writing layered and realistic characters certainly isn't. TWO INGREDIENTS FOR A GREAT STORY

These two ingredients are by no means all that you need. A story needs more than that, such as great dialogue and so on. But these TWO INGREDIENTS are what you'll find in most great and successful stories that people tend to fall in love with. Thinking about the two essential ingredients during the first draft will help you with developmental editing, but it's crucial for you to keep these in mind when you're doing developmental edits. I hope this episode will help you craft beautiful stories as well as inspire you to write more.

Line Editing Tips

Whether or not you're hiring an editor or sending your manuscript to a publisher, you need line editing. It's a line and sentence level edit that you will do after all the developmental edits. Sometimes editors will also combine line and copy editing as they are so close to one another.

In this episode we go through line editing, and I try to help you figure it out. If you're querying, a lighter line edit might be enough. But if you're self-publishing, you need to get your lines and sentences as close to perfection as possible.

Self-Publishing Is Publishing

Self-publishing can be just as professional as traditional publishing. Self-publishing isn't a shortcut, it's not cheating. It's a lot of real work. Even more work for the author than traditional publishing requires. It's not an easy way to get your book out there. In fact, it's likely even harder than traditional publishing.

Book formatting is the publisher's job. Are you self-published? Then that's you.

One way to do it is hire someone to do it for you. But there are also other ways if you're on a budget or if you have the skills and time. In this episode, we'll talk about those.
