The Cultured Bumpkin

Ep 13 features a Philip Freneau poem called "The Brave Americans" about the Battle of Eutaw Springs in 1780 in South Carolina during the American Revolution.

Freneau was a member of the New Jersey militia during the war, and also a writer that helped bridge the divide between the neoclassical and the romantic periods. His work signals a shift from the Puritan acknowledgement of God's dealings with man, to a more humanistic, self centered world view.

Episode 14 features a story by the 20th century American humorist, playwright, and reporter, James Thurber.

Episode 12 features a sentimental Christmas story by O. Henry called "The Gift of the Magi". It's a wonderful story about how love is much better than material possessions.

Abigail Reno graces the podcast a second time as we divvy up the narrating. She tells the first half of the story and I tell the second.

Merry Christmas!

Episode 11 features the O. Henry classic, The Ransom of Red Chief, and was requested by my good friend Jimmy Simmons of Marietta, GA. Hope the boys enjoy it!

This story is "Home Alone" meets "The Apple Dumpling Gang". A couple of hard luck hard cases that can't catch a break get terrorized by the brat kid they've kidnapped. If you never listen to another piece of classic American fiction, listen to this one! Hope you enjoy.
