  • Mark Twain- The Jumping Frog - w/Abigail (age 5)
Episode 9 features me introducing my 5 year old daughter Abigail to the Mark Twain classic "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". She offers some very thought provoking insight throughout the piece, to say the least, and you won't want to miss this one!

  • Edgar Allen Poe- The Tell Tale Heart w/Abigail Reno
Episode 8 features guest Abigail Reno, a lover of all things classic literature and star of the web series "Cleaner Daze." We discuss Edgar Allan Poe, and then Abigail reads "The Tell Tale Heart" for us.
Poe is an amazing storyteller who often focuses on what going on "inside the head" of his characters. "The Tell Tale Heart" is just such a piece in which contrasts nonchalant violence with gnawing guilt. Very interesting!

  • The Cultured Bumpkin with JC Jacobson Ep. 7- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow- The Village Blacksmith
Episode 7 features The Village Blacksmith by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This is one of the first poems that my Dad ever read to me, and I have enjoyed Longfellow's work ever since (the British did too! There's a bust of him in Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey, the burial place of kings of in England.) This piece extolls the virtues of the hard working family man, and I find it thought provoking to compare myself to this guy and see what qualities of his that I can work to improve within myself.

  • Stephen Crane- The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky
Episode 6 features a short story by Stephen Crane called "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky". It's set out west at the end of an era, and symbolically shows the taming of the Old West. This is a masterpiece of storytelling. It's kind of like Gary Cooper's "High Noon" mixed with some Mayberry-esque characters and humor. A real American classic!

  • The Cultured Bumpkin with JC Jacobson Ep. 5- The Whistle
Episode 5 features a letter from Benjamin Franklin to a friend in which he recounts a poor childhood purchase and the life lessons he learned from it. Franklin was a statesman, diplomat, inventor, abolitionist, and all kinds of other stuff, and his wit and wisdom was world renowned in his day. This episode is short and sweet and I bet it gets you to pondering life a little bit.
