A man can have a career, a marriage, and a full calendar and still not have a single real friend. Bob Wischer lived that, and he'll tell you how close it came to costing him. In his first marriage he ran the same loop for years, work, home, family, repeat, until the male friendships that once carried him quietly faded, nudged aside by a wife who guilted him out of the softball games and the beers with the guys. When that marriage ended and his kids left for college, he was standing there with a job and not much else, the friends they'd shared having gone with her in the divorce. He calls the place he landed the danger zone, the one where a man starts asking whether this is all there is and what his worth even is. Bob has known four men who never made it out of that zone.
What pulled him back is the focus of his talk with host Mike Forrester. Bob did the deeper work and uncovered a story he'd been carrying since before he was born, conceived before his parents married in a small town where that still carried real shame, so a sense of being unwanted got wired in before he ever took his first breath. Naming that changed how he understood seventh grade, his marriage, and even the divorce he filed for. From there, he rebuilt on purpose and with intentionality. He went looking for other men instead of waiting on them, he learned his wife's love language and his own after years of missing both, and he made a non-negotiable weekly date night the rule rather than the exception. He now runs Men Becoming Better Men and goes by the relationship engineer, because relationships turned out to be the thing that saved him.
Bob keeps circling back to the men he's lost, including one he taught alongside who seemed like the last person anyone would worry about. That's why he's blunt that suicide is a permanent answer to a temporary problem, and that no problem is too heavy to survive once you're sitting across from someone who actually cares. He's honest about his own blind spots too, the things you simply can't see from inside your own life, the label you can't read from inside the jar. If you've been running on empty, telling yourself the lie that you're better off handling it all alone, Bob's whole message is the opposite. You were never meant to do this by yourself, and one honest conversation is usually where the way back starts.

Resilience isn't formed in our comfort zones - it's built through adversity and the choice to keep moving forward. Jeff Robertson, a business coach, has transformed his greatest setbacks into his strongest assets. Jeff shares his journey from losing his law enforcement career to becoming a present and involved father and successful entrepreneur, revealing how mental toughness is developed through intentional choices and reframing perspective.
Jeff discusses how he broke generational cycles by choosing to be the father he never had, despite having no roadmap for healthy parenting. He emphasizes that resilience comes from being honest with yourself, putting effort into every area of life, showing up when it's hard and taking responsibility - his "BEST" framework helps with teaching both his children and clients how they can uniquely showup.
Your setbacks aren't your story's end - they're puzzle pieces that will eventually reveal a bigger picture. Jeff demonstrates how his lowest moment, losing his career due to a DUI, ultimately positioned him to impact lives in ways he never imagined, including a redemptive encounter with the family of the officer who years earlier had arrested him.
In this episode, you will be able to:
• Master the art of reframing adversity as stepping stones rather than roadblocks to success
• Develop practical resilience strategies using the BEST framework for consistent growth
• Break generational patterns by choosing to be what you needed rather than repeating what you experienced
• Build authentic leadership skills through understanding personality types and communication styles
• Transform your identity from your past mistakes to your future potential
• Create accountability systems that help you define and maintain your personal standards

Life's challenges can either hold us back or move us forward. In this episode, I'm joined by Robert Foster, a man who chose to turn his obstacles into opportunities. Robert's journey is proof to the power of mindset, resilience and determination. Despite facing significant setbacks, including a devastating knee injury and the loss of his father, Robert has completed over 150 obstacle competitions and earned medals in track and field. His story shows how facing physical hurdles can lead to profound emotional and mental growth, which pushes us beyond our perceived limits.
Robert shares his experience of losing everything - his business, home and financial stability. Instead of giving in to despair, he used this low point as a catalyst for change. His journey of rebuilding highlights the importance of a growth mindset, taking responsibility for our situation plus setting clear goals and taking consistent action. If you've been told to just push through the pain and keep going, but it's only making things worse then maybe it's time to break free from the cycle of ineffective action and overwhelming pain. Confidence is belief in your own abilities, and it gets built one obstacle at a time. My guest Devan Gonzalez has had to start from zero more than once. He began as the youngest trainer at a corporate gym and became its busiest. He moved to a private gym with no clients, helped build its training department, and became its highest paid trainer. Then the owner planned to move him to a location that needed a primarily Spanish-speaking trainer. Devan saw it as a setup to fail, and he quit on the spot. He called his girlfriend, now his wife, and told her he’d stand outside a grocery store selling sessions if he had to. He built that independent business to six figures. Today he runs Strive 11 Fitness with a business partner and is growing it as a national franchise. He’s also married with a three-year-old daughter. In this conversation with Mike Forrester, he shares how a man keeps going when life knocks him down.
Devan describes self-belief as a wall of bricks. Every obstacle you’ve already beaten is a brick, so the next one is just a new level. When he didn’t know how to sell, he learned from YouTube videos and tried again until it worked. He says a man will never have it all figured out, so waiting for that is only an excuse. You only need the next step to the next milestone. He breaks big goals into small ones, so losing 40 pounds in a year becomes about a pound a week. He reads most criticism as people pulling you back like crabs in a bucket. He limits their access rather than cutting them off, and he looks for circles of people further along than him. Every goal costs time, effort, or money, and he says a man has to be willing to pay. While launching the franchise, he stopped working out and everything felt bigger than it was. Getting back to the gym cleared his head and lowered his stress.
The heart of this conversation is what Devan learned at home. He says an entrepreneur can build something for his family and lose his family in the process. Now his phone goes on silent for the evening hours with his wife and daughter. He and his wife share one calendar so his schedule never catches her off guard. Early on, he kept business problems from her. Now he brings them to her, even when he already has an answer, so she feels part of what they’re building. Mike Forrester knows that mistake from his own life. When he started in IT consulting, he hid his stress to protect his wife, and she could read him anyway. This one is for the dad with kids still at home who carries his work stress alone. He keeps it from his wife to protect her. He wants to build something for his family without losing them along the way.
