Elmo, the well-known Sesame Street character, recently asked his followers on X/Twitter, “How is everybody doing?” In response, “he got an earful,” as CNN reported, with many complaining about the hardship of their lives. Scanning the news, it’s not hard to see why. But there’s hope beyond the headlines if we’ll look in the right direction.

FBI director Christopher Wray told members of Congress this week that China is already taking steps that would “wreak havoc” on the United States through cyber attacks. However, they seem just as intent on meddling with their own people as they are with us. Unfortunately for them, it doesn’t seem to be working. Let’s take a look at why that’s the case and what it can teach us about our own lives as well.

Elon Musk announced that his brain chip start-up Neuralink has implanted a device in its first live human subject. The quarter-sized chip is designed to interpret a person’s neural activity so they can control external devices with their thoughts. Is this a good thing? Let’s look at how medical ethicists consider the topic and then take four biblical steps.

Are you worried that we are moving closer to World War III? If you’re not, should you be? Iran is now part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, an alliance led by Russia and China. This partnership will enable Iran to engage in commerce and trade arms more freely with both nations. And in assessing other concerns that those countries are facing, such as economic downturns, British journalist Sherelle Jacobs warns: “World War III is approaching fast.”

How will history view the killing of three Americans in a drone attack on a US outpost in Jordan last Sunday? The tragedy marks the first time American troops have been killed by enemy fire in the Middle East since the Gaza war began. Now, as the Wall Street Journal reports, “the Biden administration said it wants to respond forcefully enough to deter Iran’s allies from conducting further attacks on US forces without getting bogged down in another war in the Middle East.”

Taylor Swift was in the news yesterday as she watched her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, play tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, who won the AFC Championship game. However, Swift was also in the news earlier in the week as millions of people came across fake sexually explicit AI-generated images of the pop singer on social media.

People seldom make products for which there is no market. Online pornography has nearly doubled in the last five years to a $1.1 billion industry. And this is just the tragic tip of the moral iceberg.

Tomorrow is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, designated by the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazis’ largest extermination and concentration camp, by Soviet soldiers on January 27, 1945. This annual remembrance focuses on the six million Jews murdered by the German Nazi regime between 1933 and 1945. One-fourth of them, 1.5 million, were children. We remember the horror of antisemitic hatred so it will not rise again in our day.

But it is.

What can we learn from the past to keep it from happening again in the present?

The Doomsday Clock was set at 90 seconds to midnight this week, matching the closest it’s ever come to marking humanity’s end. But what is the Doomsday Clock? And should we care what those behind it think? Turns out, God has a better way for us to respond to its dire warnings than with the fear and angst it’s intended to create.
