President Thabo Mbeki has spent the past few days engaging the ANC’s interim leadership in the Free State to try and foster unity. That province’s leadership structure was disbanded following a court order. It is, much like others, facing a long-standing problem of disunity ahead of this year’s elective conference. Suspended ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule, who appears in court today on corruption related charges, has been accused of being at the centre of divisions in the Free State.
