Today marks 32 years since South Africa’s first democratically elected President Nelson Mandela was released from prison. The statesman died in 2013 after a long illness. He made his first speech to the people of South Africa from the Cape Town City Hall. It is also here where President Cyril Ramaphosa who stood beside him on that day, delivered his State of the Nation address last night.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has committed to creating an environment that will help small businesses to create jobs and for legislation hampering informal traders from doing business to be amended. He was delivering the State of the Nation Address last night at the Cape Town City Hall. He has appointed the former chairperson of the Small Business Institute to lead a team that will make these changes. He has also announced that hemp and cannabis will be industrialised and has encouraged localisation.

Parliament’s Select Committee on Education and Technology, Sports, Arts and Culture is calling for Sibongile Mani who has been convicted for theft of NSFAS funds to be sentenced to community service. Mani was convicted of theft by the East London Regional Court earlier this week. The Committee says this will allow the Walter Sisulu student to finish her studies and says she should rather be given an opportunity to pay back the money. What are your thoughts on this proposal?

Advocate Dali Mpofu who is a member of the Judicial Service Commission is in hot water after the Pretoria Society of Advocates lodged a complaint against him for his conduct during the interviews of Chief Justice candidates last week. Mpofu has also faced criticism from Judge Johan Kriegler from Freedom Under Law for the way he handled the interviews together with another committee member and EFF leader Julius Malema. The Pretoria Society of Advocate wants the General Council of the Bar to recall Mpofu.
