In South Africa, corporal punishment has been banned since 1996 and legislation to protect children for more than 20 years. However, surveys show that 50% of children in schools will experience corporal punishment. Yesterday, the Johannesburg High Court heard a case on corporal punishment where two families have children have been beaten by teachers. In the 2020-21 fiscal year, the South African Council for Educators (SACE) received 169 complaints. Only two teachers “were removed indefinitely for severe assault on learners,” while 23 were found guilty and paid a fine. The case also raises concerns surrounding how the SACE has been lenient upon issuing the mandatory sanctions, if found guilty for assault.

National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has turned down a request by the UDM and the ATM to take action against President Cyril Ramaphosa over the Phala Phala farm matter. The UDM has requested that parliament undertake an investigation while the ATM has called for the establishment of a process to remove the president. Former State Intelligence DG Arthur Fraser last month laid a criminal complaint against Ramaphosa claiming there was a theft of four million US dollars from the President's Limpopo farm and that the matter was not reported to the police.

Taps are fast running dry in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. This after the maintenance team of the municipality discovered that water could no longer be extracted from the Impofu dam due to the low water levels. At least 30 suburbs in the metro have been affected by the outage. The Department of Water and Sanitation has also intervened to assist with the crisis.

As a young man he’s being credited for dedicating his life to rescuing the Great African Kelp Forest. It’s said to be the only forest of giant bamboo kelp on the planet which stretches from the Cape to Namibia.

 Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa's family has expressed optimism as the second docket in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial was disclosed to the High Court in Pretoria - forcing postponement of the case to today (Monday). The second docket opened in 2019 recommends Longwe Twala, Kelly Khumalo, Gladness, Khumalo, Zandile Khumalo, Mthokozisi Twala and Maggie Phiri be charged with murder and defeating the ends of justice. Meyiwa was shot dead in 2014 in Vosloorus at the home of his girlfriend's mother Kelly Khumalo. How is this likely to change the course the case is taking?

 A few weeks ago social media was abuzz with the reported kidnapping of Shireen Essop. At the time, reports indicated that she was last seen on May 23, driving down Weltevreden Road in a white Toyota. Her car was then recovered in Philippi hours later. The good news is that she was found through the help of the Klipfontein Mission Station Neighbourhood Watch. She was reportedly held hostage in Khayelitsha where ransom money was demanded for her release. So we thought to use this opportunity to talk about the involvement of community anti-crime groups and how effective they can be in working with community safety officials.
