My revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], once said:
“It is a wondrous trait,
when G‑d grants a person
a warm sensitivity and a pleasurable satisfaction in doing a fellow Jew a favor —
to the point that he cherishes him more than he cherishes himself.
For a person can find many reasons to explain
why he himself deserves [to be challenged by] difficulties,
whereas such assumptions about someone else are unthinkable.”

Beyond the slightest shadow of a doubt,
wherever our feet tread,
the sole reason is that we refine and purify the earth by uttering words of the Torah and of prayer.
We — all of Israel — are agents of the Compassionate One,
each of us according to the charge that supernal Providence has decreed upon him.
No one is free from the holy task that has been placed on our shoulders.

The first step in preparing for disciplined meditation,
especially on G‑dly concepts,
requires:
(a) toiling with the flesh to remove one’s pleasurable taste for worldly matters;
(b) toiling with the soul to arouse a pleasurable taste for the contemplation of concepts in general,
and of G‑dly concepts in particular.

The Alter Rebbe taught
that the mitzvah of ahavas Yisrael, loving a fellow Jew, applies to every member of the Jewish people, even if one has never seen him.
How much more does it apply to a member of the Jewish neighborhood in which one lives, to every man or woman who is a member of one’s own community.

The Alter Rebbe
provided the members of the chassidic brotherhood with a path in the intellectual service of G‑d and the search for the truth.
This entails examining whether every action is dictated only by the truth
and is motivated by one’s endeavors in Divine service.
This path of service does not involve breaking down mountains, shattering boulders and overturning the world, as some utterly mistaken people think.
The simple truth is that any activity or endeavor, whatever it may be, if it is carried out with sincere intent, suffices:
a blessing recited with concentration;
the words of prayer uttered with a prepared heart and with a knowledge of “before Whom one stands”;
a verse from Chumash with the awareness that it is the Word of G‑d;
a verse from Tehillim;
or the positive trait of drawing one’s friend close with love and affection.
True, to attain this requires awesome and tremendous exertion.
One must study extensively and with understanding, every individual according to his level.
G‑d will then help him [so that his efforts] will be genuine.

[In the above note, the Rebbe spells out the unusual meaning of an abbreviation that appears in the Hebrew text of Torah Or.]
It is written, “A man goes out to his work and to his labor until evening.”
Every soul [is assigned] both general and particular tasks when it descends to this material plane.
This mission is alluded to by the phrase, “A man goes out to his work.”
That is, the soul leaves its standing in the treasure-store of souls in the celestial heights,
and descends level after level until it becomes enclothed in the body and in the natural, animal soul.
The goals [of this descent] are (a) man’s “work” — his overall tasks of empowering [spiritual] form over [tangible] matter,
and illuminating the world with the light of the Torah and the lamp of the mitzvos —
and (b) his “labor,” his particular tasks.
For every soul has its individual duties in the realm of intellect and emotion, based upon its nature and inclinations….
[These endeavors continue] “until evening” —
only as long as one can still take action, as it is written, “[…the commandments that I command you to do] today, to perform them.” [And on this phrase the Sages comment, “They can be performed today (i.e., in This World), and not tomorrow (i.e., in the World to Come).”]
From a deeper perspective, the above verse may be understood
[…] as alluding to the soul’s [heightened] ascent following its descent (“a man goes out”) to the material realm.
When the soul ascends after having been clothed in a body in This World below,
[it proceeds] “to its work:” its activities in the World to Come echo its [former] work in This World.
If, [while in This World,] that person had set aside regular hours for Torah study,
that soul is allowed in the other world, too, to enter the tents of Torah study.
Moreover, [when the soul ultimately ascends,] it proceeds "to its labor:” if, [while in This World,] it engaged in its labors of Divine service properly,
it then ascends “until erev.”
It ascends level after level, until it apprehends the pleasant sweetness (areivus) of the Essence of the [infinite] Ein Sof.

The text of this essay is a compilation of letters from the Frierdiker Rebbe, and some commentary.
Please enjoy the listen as it will enhance your study of the Hayom Yom.
In the Afternoon Service, Tachanun is not recited.
The Tzemach Tzedek writes:
The love [of G‑d at the level] indicated by the verse, “Beside You, I desire nothing,” is such that one desires nothing other than G‑d Himself.
One does not even desire “heaven” or “earth,” which allude here to the Higher Gan Eden and the Lower Gan Eden, for they were created only through the letter yud.
Rather, one’s love is directed solely to G‑d, to His very Essence.
And indeed, these were the words that used to be heard from our mentor and master (the Alter Rebbe),
when he entered a state of dveikus:
“I desire nothing.
I don’t want Your Gan Eden.
I don’t want Your World to Come….
I want nothing but You alone.”
Gut Yom-Tov!
May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year in the study of Chassidus and the paths of Chassidus.

Chabad Chassidus opens the gates of the halls of Chochmah and Binah,
enabling one to know and recognize, with an intellectual grasp, “the One Who spoke, and the world came into being.”
It arouses corresponding feelings in the heart that spring from the particular G‑dly concept that one has understood.
Moreover, it guides every individual — according to his own level —
along the path by which he can draw near to holiness, enabling him to serve G‑d with his mind and heart.

A main foundation of the Chabad approach is
for the mind, which naturally rules over the heart,
to enlist the heart in the service of G‑d
through abstraction, understanding, and a deepening awareness of the greatness of G‑d.
