  • Hayom Yom 4 Cheshvan - Daily Torah study is critical for the soul

Studying Torah every day critically affects our very lives:

not only the soul of the person studying, but the souls of his household as well,

for then the atmosphere in the home is one of Torah and the fear of G‑d.

  • Hayom Yom 3 Cheshvan - A happy week living with Avraham Avinu

In the above-mentioned talk, the Rebbe Rashab continued:

“Bereishis is a happy parshah, even though its conclusion is not so pleasant.

Noach is [the parshah of] the Flood, but the end of the week is cheerful: our Patriarch Avraham is born.

“The really joyful week is Lech Lecha,

for throughout that entire week we live with Avraham,

who was the first to utterly devote his life

to proclaiming G‑d’s existence in the world.

And this mesirus nefesh he bequeathed as an inheritance to all Jews.”

  • Hayom Yom 2 Cheshvan - Live with the times, the daily Torah portion

In the course of a talk that my revered father, [the Rebbe Rashab,] delivered on Motzaei Shabbos [Parshas] Lech Lecha, 5651 (1890), he said:

“Once, in his first years as Rebbe,

the Alter Rebbe declared in public:

‘We must live with the times.’

“Through his brother, R. Yehudah Leib, the elders of the chassidic community discovered the Rebbe’s intent:

We must live with the Torah portion of the week

and, more specifically, of the current day.

It is not enough to study [a segment of] the weekly Torah portion every day; we must live with it.”

  • Hayom Yom 1 Cheshvan - Journey to the destination of life's mission

[In the Torah Reading] at the Afternoon Service, and likewise [at the Morning Service] on Monday and Thursday of the following week,

the third aliyah begins with the verse, “And G‑d appeared to Avram.”

My revered father, [the Rebbe Rashab,] once told a chassid at yechidus:

“From the time the Holy One, blessed be He, told Avraham, ‘Go forth from your land,’

and thereafter ‘Avram journeyed on, continuing to travel southward,’

the mystical mission of beirurim began. [This term signifies the task of sifting materiality, and elevating the Divine sparks that are embedded within all permissible entities and activities, by using them with spiritual purpose.]

“Propelled by the decree of Sublime Providence, a person travels

to the place where the sparks that are destined to be elevated by him await their redemption.

“Tzaddikim, being gifted with vision, can perceive where ‘their’ sparks await them,

and proceed there of their own accord.

    For common people, by contrast,

the Cause of all causes and the Prime Mover sets in motion a train of events and circumstances that will bring an individual to the particular place

where he is duty-bound to fulfill his specific tasks of sifting materiality and elevating its sparks.”

  • Hayom Yom 30 Tishrei - Customs in saying Hallel

In Hallel, even when praying alone, one should repeat the verse beginning Hodu l’A-donai [ki tov] after the verse beginning Yomar na, and likewise after each of the next two verses.

The verse beginning VeAvraham zakein and the request beginning Zevadiah yishmereini should be recited three times.

  • Hayom Yom 29 Tishrei - The effect of speech

[Our custom is] to recite the blessing over a rainbow, unlike the view of those authorities who question whether this blessing should be recited.

One of the householders in Mezhibuzh had a running argument with a fellow townsman.

Once, while he was in the shul of the Baal Shem Tov,

he cried out that he would tear apart his adversary like a fish.

Hearing this, the Baal Shem Tov told his disciples to hold each other’s hands

and stand near him in a circle with their eyes closed.

He then closed the circle by resting his own hands

on the shoulders of the two disciples nearest to him.

All the disciples suddenly screamed in terror:

they had a vision of this person actually tearing apart his adversary like a fish.

This unequivocally shows that every potential has an effect,

    either in a material format,

or in a spiritual format that can be perceived only with a higher and subtler sensitivity.

  • Hayom Yom 28 Tishrei - G-d's wedding ring with the Jews

It is written: “If you walk in the path of My statutes… I will grant your rains in their season.”

The study of the Torah and the observance of the mitzvos are the wedding ring

with which the Holy One, blessed be He, consecrated the Jewish people, obligating Himself to provide them with their sustenance and livelihood.

  • Hayom Yom 27 Tishrei - Torah an Mitzvos the path to fortunate life

The Torah and its mitzvos encompass a person’s life from the day he emerges from his mother’s womb until the day he is summoned [from Above].

The Torah and the mitzvos stand him in a ray of light, with a sound mind, lofty emotions, and upright conduct —

not only between man and G‑d, but also between man and man.

For a person who acts according to the Torah and the directives of our Sages lives a happy life, both materially and spiritually.

  • Hayom Yom 26 Tishrei - Remember the Baal Shem Tov on Mondays

The Alter Rebbe quotes the verse “Forever, O G‑d, Your word stands in the heavens”

and cites a classic teaching based on it. [The teaching: Each of the Ten Creative Utterances (“G‑d’s word”) in the Six Days of Creation, such as “Let there be heavens,” is eternally present in the universe and continuously, at every instant, recreates all of existence, such as the heavens, ex nihilo.] However, the Alter Rebbe cites this teaching (both in Tanya — Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah, ch. 1, and in Iggeres HaKodesh, Epistle 25) in the name of the Baal Shem Tov

even though the same teaching appears [much earlier] in Midrash Tehillim.

(This fact is also mentioned in the maamar beginning Ki bayom hazeh yechaper, in Likkutei Torah.)

[The Alter Rebbe] has a particular reason for doing this.

The utterance, “Let there be heavens” — which itself stands in the heavens eternally — was issued on the second day of Creation.

This serves as an everlasting reminder that on Monday, Chai Elul, the Baal Shem Tov was born.

  • Hayom Yom 25 Tishrei - The Alter Rebbe and the Mitteler Rebbe's songs

There are ten melodies, some of them merely melodic phrases, whose composition is ascribed to the Alter Rebbe.

Those ascribed to the Mitteler Rebbe were composed in his time and were sung in his presence.

He was not their composer, however.

He had a group of musical young men who were known as "the Mitteler Rebbe’s choir,”

which comprised singers and various instrumentalists.
