  • Hayom Yom 14 Cheshvan - Pursuing a spiritual livelihood

“A man’s footsteps are made firm by G‑d, [and He desires his way].”

Every member of the Jewish people has an assigned spiritual mission in life —

to build a dwelling place for G‑d.

Moreover, every individual, whoever and wherever he may be,

must make great efforts to seek out and find

a “spiritual livelihood,” just as he seeks out ways of earning his material livelihood.

This is because “he desires His way” — G‑d’s path —

as is stated of Avraham, “For I have known him, [because he commands his children and his household after him,] that they should observe the way of G‑d (Havayah).”

    For there are two paths,

the path of nature and the path that is higher than nature.

G‑d created the world in such a way that it would appear — to mortal eyes — to follow the path of nature.

This is “the path of Elokim.”

Torah and mitzvos, by contrast, are “the path of Havayah,”

which draws down into nature the higher realm that transcends nature.

And in response [to a Jew’s dedication to “the path of Havayah”], G‑d draws down to the Jewish people spiritual influence that transcends nature, within the framework of nature.

  • Hayom Yom 13 Cheshvan - The severity of evil speech

The Baal Shem Tov conducted a regular study session in Gemara with his disciples,

    combining acumen and erudition.

It embraced the writings of Rambam R. Yitzchak Alfasi, and Rabbeinu Asher,

and other commentaries of the Rishonim

that were relevant to the passage under discussion.

The Baal Shem Tov, [to introduce his explanation of each passage of the Gemara,] would translate its words into Yiddish.

When they were studying Tractate Arachin,

they reached the statement of the Sages (on p.15b) that “threefold speech kills three people.”

    The Baal Shem Tov explained:

“Evil speech kills all three people —

the person who first invented the story, the [present] speaker, and the listener.

However, this happens to their spiritual garments,

which is more severe than killing someone physically.”

  • Hayom Yom 12 Cheshvan - A Jew hears that his life transcends nature

One of the Alter Rebbe’s first teachings,

which in those [early] days were known as verter, was the following mystical interpretation of the opening verse of the Shema:

Shema Yisrael (lit., “Hear, O Israel”) — a Jew hears deeply that

Havayah Elokeinu — our strength and vitality transcend nature,

and that Havayah Echad — Havayah is One.

  • Hayom Yom 11 Cheshvan - Emendations to Torah Or

[In the above note, the Rebbe makes emendations to the Hebrew text of Torah Or that have since been incorporated in all of its editions.]

There are notes by my father, [the Rebbe Rashab,] on the discourse entitled Pasach Eliyahu, which he began writing in the winter of 5652 (1901).

  • Hayom Yom 10 Cheshvan - The Alter Rebbe's exhilaration from Atzilus

The [Alter] Rebbe used to refer to the World of Atzilus (אצילות) as “above.”

    As is related,

writing about this concept would bring him to such exhilaration that he could write no more than its first three letters — אצי.

  • Hayom Yom 9 Cheshvan - G-d reveals Himself to a circumcised Jew

When my revered father, [the Rebbe Rashab,] was four or five years old,

he came to his grandfather, the Tzemach Tzedek, on Shabbos Parshas Vayeira

    and began to cry.

“Why did G‑d reveal Himself to Avraham, but does not reveal Himself to us?” he complained.

    The Tzemach Tzedek answered:

“When a Jew who is a tzaddik decides at the age of ninety-nine that he must circumcise himself,

he is worthy of having G‑d reveal Himself to him.”

  • Hayom Yom 8 Cheshvan - A Mitzvah connects the person with G-d

The word mitzvah is related to the word tzavsa, meaning “connection.”

A person who performs a mitzvah forges a connection with the Essence of G‑d —

with the One Who gives that command.

This is the meaning of the teaching of the Sages that “the reward for a mitzvah is a mitzvah.”

The reward for a mitzvah is the connection it makes with G‑d’s Essence.

    By way of analogy:

A simple person feels innately humble,

utterly insignificant, before the wisdom and greatness of a sage.

Similarly, from the sage’s perspective, he hardly considers the simple person a human being.

    וְאֵין זֶה דִּמְבַטְּלוֹ וְדוֹחֶה אוֹתוֹ, חַס וְשָׁלוֹם, דְּזֶהוּ מִדָּה רָעָה

    Not that he belittles him or rejects him, Heaven forbid — that would be an undesirable quality;

    וְנֶחְשָׁב בְּעֵינָיו שֶׁאֵין לוֹ קֶשֶׁר שֶׁל יַחַס עִמּוֹ כְּלָל

rather, it appears to him that he has no connection or relationship with him at all.

However, when the sage tells the simple person to do something for him,

that command establishes the identity of the simple person.

First of all, it makes him feel significant, for he can fulfill the sage’s command,

and he was the one whom the sage commanded to do something.

Likewise, he becomes significant in the eyes of the sage, who speaks to him and gives him the command.

Moreover, the command unites the prominent and lofty sage with this simplest of people.

The analog [with regard to the performance of a mitzvah] is self-explanatory.

    Moreover, it is obviously immaterial

whether the command is for a great and lofty matter or a small and simple one.

  • Hayom Yom 7 Cheshvan - Stages before and after Matan Torah

In the era since the Giving of the Torah, the stages [in our Divine service] are:

first, removing the foreskin of the body, then of the tongue, and then of the heart — action, speech, and thought.

Avraham Avinu, who lived before the Giving of the Torah,

    הֲרֵי בַּתְּחִילָה הִכִּיר אֶת בּוֹרְאוֹ — מַחֲשָׁבָה

    first “recognized his Creator” — thought;

    אַחַר כַּךְ פִּרְסֵם אֱלֹקוּתוֹ — דִּבּוּר

    then publicized G‑d’s existence — speech;

    וְאַחַר כַּךְ מִילָה — מַעֲשֶׂה

then performed the circumcision — action.

  • Hayom Yom 6 Cheshvan - Wealth and peasant years

When the Alter Rebbe wished to bless R. Yekusiel Liepler with wealth,

the latter replied that he had no desire for it,

lest it interfere with his study of Chassidus and involvement in Divine service.

When the Alter Rebbe then sought to bless him with long life,

he replied: “But not peasant years.

Not years of those ‘who have eyes, but do not see; who have ears, but do not hear’ —

who neither see nor hear G‑dliness.”

  • Hayom Yom 5 Cheshvan - Jews are like shinning stars

The Jewish people are likened to stars that sparkle in the heavens.

Thanks to their light, even a person walking in the darkness of night will not err.

    Every Jew, man or woman,

has the moral and spiritual power to become a source of influence

for his friends and associates, and to situate them in a ray of light.
