    Synopsis

We know that Tomchei Temimim was established upon the suggestion of my father-in-law the Rebbe to his father, even though his father was the Nasi at the time, and there is only one Nasi at a time, especially in Chabad, and “Chabad” (embodied in the establishment of the yeshiva) involves Chochmah, Binah and Daas. The yeshiva was founded on 15 Elul, the third day from 13 Elul, the wedding anniversary of my father-in-law, the Rebbe; the verse states “…on the third day He will set us up, and we will live before Him,” and this is achieved by the founding of Tomchei Temimim, whose students’ role is to be “shining lights,” such that those whom they influence also become shining lights themselves. In other words: every one of them should make his four cubits and his personal home resemble Tomchei Temimim. Since every Nasi is the successor of the Nasi before him, it emerges that in our generation we have the revelation of all eight generations of Nesi’im, and we receive Torah teachings from them all, like the well-known story about the seven teachings heard from the Baal Shem Tov in Gan Eden. When every one of us learns and repeats the words of Torah said in Gan Eden, which causes “his lips to move” in Gan Eden – this is akin to “seeing your World in your lifetime” in this physical world.

    Synopsis

Because the king is the life of the entire country, true kingship exists only when “the people willingly accept His kingship over them” – “You shall crown Me over you,” which occurs on Rosh Hashanah. Being that Chai Elul is the time to make up for the month of Tishrei and Rosh Hashanah of the previous year, and Elul in general is the month of preparation for the coming Rosh Hashana, and being that we find ourselves in unusual times etc. – effort must be made to prepare the “country,” i.e., the entire world, to “willingly accept His kingship over them.” And it starts with the young children, “breath that is devoid of sin.” Therefore it is crucial to do everything in our power to ensure that every Jewish child receives a Jewish education according to the Torah, and the remaining days and hours from Chai Elul until Rosh Hashana should be used for this purpose. To put it in simple terms: The whole point, goal, and purpose of this entire farbrengen is to give a shake to everyone listening to go out and find every Jewish child and ensure that not one child remains whose parents aren’t spoken to about providing the child with a Jewish education, and if a child doesn’t yet receive a Jewish education, that should be fixed.

    Synopsis

    (1) 13 Elul is the wedding anniversary of my father-in-law the Rebbe, the Nasi of our generation, something which gets stronger every year, and “the body follows the head.” (2) The Alter Rebbe writes in his Shulchan Aruch: “In the era of the Beis Hamikdash, the Sages of the early generations ordained that communal lecturers begin publicly expounding the laws of the festivals 30 days before the festival…from the fourteenth of Elul they should expound the laws of Sukkos…to remind the people etc.” And he adds, “This ordinance did not cease from the Jewish people even after the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash etc.” This aligns with the saying that “In the presence of the lofty souls like Rash”bi, the Beis Hamikdash was not destroyed at all” because they were connected to the Divine essence and core etc. Even though these are very lofty levels, this is relevant to every Jew. As a practical matter, a focus should be placed on studying the laws of the holiday, as well as providing everyone with their holiday needs, as well as the holiday needs for Rosh Hashana (as it says regarding Rosh Hashana, “…Go, eat fat foods and drink sweet drinks and send portions to whoever has nothing prepared…”

    Synopsis

The first day of the week is associated with the mitzvah of Bikkurim [at the beginning of Parashas Ki Savo], which are brought “from the first of all the fruit of the earth”: Sunday marks the beginning of creation, including the “Bikkurim” of creation – Adam Harishon. In terms of Divine service: A Jew must turn everything in the world into “Bikkurim” for Hashem. While it’s true that in the mitzvah of bikkurim one gives “from the first and not all the first,” whereas in the mitzvah of tzedakah one gives his entire soul to Hashem (by giving away money that he earned with his very life, and which he could use to purchase his needs) – even the mitzvah of tzedakah must be done in a manner of Bikkurim – as though it is the first mitzvah one merits to fulfill in their life. Today is also the tenth day – “the tenth shall be holy” – of the month of Elul. The lesson is that the service of the month of Elul must be done in a way that connects the ten faculties of the soul to the inner core (“first”) of the soul.

    Synopsis

When a man marries a woman, “he makes her forbidden to the rest of the world like hekdesh,” and this is effected in “three ways – with money, with a document, and with relations.” “Money” is something external, which one can use to purchase his needs; similarly, “a document” merely needs to have some words written on it. But “relations” is an inner connection. Since the Torah comes from above, it is understood that all these concepts exist spiritually as well, namely, in the “kiddushin” between Hashem and the Jewish people “‘On his wedding day’ – this refers to the giving of the Torah”: A Jew must view “the rest of the world” as something forbidden to him “like hekdesh (i.e., he may use it only when it involves a bracha etc.). Specifically, there are “three ways” by which the bond between Hashem and the Jewish people is forged: Most mitzvos are performed with a person’s property (the external aspects of his life) – “money.” Then there are mitzvos performed with the faculties of his soul, primarily his chochmah – Torah study, which is called a “document.” Then there are mitzvos performed with the body (which cannot be done through a shliach), which are akin to “relations.” Since the Torah must be received every day “like new,” meaning that this kiddushin must take place every day – therefore, a person, and especially a yeshiva student, must resolve every day anew that “the world” is forbidden to him like hekdesh, and that his involvement in it will be only through one of these three ways.

    Synopsis

In the laws of gittin (based on Chamishi of Parashas Ki Seitzei) we find two opposite extremes: (1) According to Beis Shammai (and some say the halacha here follows Beis Shammai), it is forbidden for a man to divorce his wife unless he “found unseemly conduct in her); even according to Beis Hillel who holds that one may divorce his wife even if “she burned his dish,” still, “he should not rush to divorce her” (effort should be made to keep the marriage intact so that the blessing made at their wedding (“an everlasting edifice”) won’t be in vain etc.). (2) If he did divorce her, “what he did is done,” and he has no mitzvah to remarry her. The lesson is: (1) When by Hashgacha Pratis someone has begun a certain shlichus in spreading Yiddishkeit, and he finds it difficult – “she did not find favor in his eyes”; “she burnt his dish,” i.e. he hasn’t found success – still “it is forbidden to divorce her” – he may not abandon the shlichus. At the very least, “he should not rush to divorce her” because it is within his ability, if he truly tries, to overcome the difficulties, and then he will find that they were only a test without any substance. (2) If it happened that he did “divorce” it, then “what he did is done,” and now, since “It is not good for man to be alone,” he is obligated to find a new shlichus and utilize all his potential – and in this way he will also atone for betraying his first shlichus.

    Synopsis

    (1) The connection between the coming of Moshiach and the Rambam’s Yad Hachazakah – which concludes with the halachos pertaining to Moshiach. (2) Today’s Rambam states: “When a mizbeach became damaged, all of the kodashim in the Sanctuary that had been slaughtered, but whose blood had not been cast on the mizbeach, are disqualified, for there is no mizbeach on which to cast the blood” (i.e., just as the korbanos and the kohanim must be without blemish, so must the mizbeach be without blemish). However, “kodashim that were alive…are not disqualified…for living animals are not disqualified.” This teaches us a wondrous lesson: Every Jew is “alive” by virtue of his connection to Hashem, the Source of Life – and this is expressed practically by his keeping the Torah of life and the mitzvos, of which it says, “and live by them.” And because he is alive, in every situation, even if the mizbeach is damaged, “he is not disqualified.”

    Synopsis

The verse states (in shelishi of Parashas Ki Seitzei), “When you build a new house, you shall make a guardrail for your roof…”: When a Jew moves takes on a new service (“a new house”), he must put up a “guardrail” to protect himself, so that he will be able to withstand the challenges of his new mission (“so that the one who falls will not fall”). And the guardrail must be ten tefachim high – protecting all ten faculties of the soul. The Gemara offers three interpretations of the verse “…you shall build your house”: (1) it refers to studying Gemara; (2) it refers to good deeds; (3) it means “expounding [upon Torah] and receiving reward.” Accordingly, a guardrail is necessary not only when the “new house” is in the mundane realm; rather, even when someone begins to study Gemara (learning to understand and grasp), he must put up a guardrail to ensure that his intellect doesn’t lead him astray, and similarly when it comes to good deeds. Moreover, even someone who learns Torah on the highest level “expounding and receiving reward” in the future (i.e., he isn’t concerned with what he gains from it now) – he, too, needs a guardrail to protect all ten faculties of his soul. And the fact that we are obligated to make a bracha upon putting up the guardrail indicates that one obviously has the power to do it etc.

    (1) During the month of Elul we recite L’dovid Hashem Ori, which expresses how Hashem illuminates (“ori”) the daily life of every Jew, and how Hashem saves him and helps him (“my salvation”), and then it concludes with the trust in Hashem (“Put your hope in Hashem”). (2) A lesson for Ahavas Yisroel from Sheini of Parashas Ki Seitzei: The verse says, “You shall not see your brother’s ox or sheep straying and ignore them; you shall return them to your brother.” Even if “your brother is not close to you or if you do not know him…” nevertheless it is forbidden to hide and refrain from helping him. Similarly in the spiritual sense: One cannot hide from any Jew who has “lost” something in terms of keeping Torah and mitzvos; even if “he is not close to you…or if you do not know him…” you must “return it” to him etc.

    Synopsis

The special quality of the month of Elul is expressed by the Alter Rebbe with the parable of a king who goes out to the field where anyone can greet him, and he receives them all with a pleasant countenance etc., after which the people follow him to the city etc. This parable can be understood by children: certainly, when they are told that the king of the country is in the field and that they can go to him and ask for whatever they need, and that he will happily fulfill it etc. – they will put everything aside and run to the king. The Torah of Truth tells us that this is what Hashem does in the month of Elul. And although we don’t see it with our physical eyes – that is only because of how lofty the King is – a fact which awakens their love for the King even more, and motivates them to resolve to behave as Hashem wants etc.
