    Synopsis

The world is called a “dwelling” for Hashem, as well as a “garden” (“I have come to My garden”). The difference is that whereas a dwelling remains essentially in the same state as when it was built, an orchard (garden) by definition must grow, and it requires great effort. And this is the purpose of man’s service in the world – to elevate it through his service to a higher state. The lesson is that if a Jew argues, I’ll keep mitzvos and learn Torah as I must, but why should I work harder than that? – the answer is that he’s in an orchard, so he can’t leave things in their original state. Rather, he must elevate the world around him and ascend in holiness. Similarly, when it comes to working with others: One may argue that he wants to work only with “grain,” which grows quickly and requires less effort than fruit-trees, but “Man is a tree of the field” (as it says in Parashas Shoftim) – his job is to make fruit-bearing trees – to turn another person into a tree that bears fruits of its own, and those fruits in turn contain seeds that will grow into even more trees etc. And although it requires more work, and you don’t see the fruits right away, the result is fruits that are much more valuable than grain.

    Synopsis

At the beginning of Chapter 11 of Hilchos Melachim, the Rambam brings three proofs from Chumash for the coming of Moshiach, the third of which states: “Similarly, with regard to the cities of refuge, it says [in Chamishi of Parashas Shoftim], ‘When Hashem your G-d will expand your borders…you must add three more cities etc.’ This command was never fulfilled etc.” Why does the Rambam put this proof in its own halacha, instead of combining it in the same halacha as the first two proofs? The answer is as follows: the fact that cities of refuge (which are for people who kill unintentionally) will be needed in the future era, also serves as proof for what the Rambam says in the next halacha – that Moshiach won’t have to perform any miracles and wonders because the world will continue to follow its orindary course. Now, the Rambam doesn’t explicitly cite this verse as proof that the world will follow its ordinary course, because it could also be explained that the cities of refuge in the future will be needed for people who killed unintentionally in the current era; therefore, he instead brings proof from the story of Ben Kuziva etc. Nevertheless, since on the other hand it stands to reason from the plain meaning of the verse that the cities of refuge at that time will be needed for unintentional killings committed in the future (because even when the Beis Hamikdash stood, Jews lived in the lands of the Keini, Kenizi, and Kadmoni, but relied on the cities of refuge within Eretz Yisrael proper) – therefore the Rambam brings this proof from the cities of refuge in its own halacha, to associate it with the following halacha, because it is at least a possible proof for his approach in the subsequent halacha that the world will continue to follow its ordinary course.

    Synopsis

It’s explained at length in Kuntres HaTefillah and elsewhere that davening must be prefaced by contemplation etc., and in essence, it’s an explicit halacha in Shulchan Aruch: “Before tefillah one should think about the exaltedness of Hashem and the lowliness of man.” Yet despite all this, people don’t give it proper attention. This contemplation must be done in such a way that it leaves a noticeable impression upon one’s davening, so that he feels like “a servant before his master. Ostensibly, the same obligation applies to all three tefillos; although you can argue that it leaves an impression for the whole day, and therefore it isn’t necessary for Mincha and Maariv – the truth is you can’t say that in this case, because the contemplation before davening isn’t just a preparation for davening, but an inherent component of davening itself. At any rate, for Shacharis, contemplation is certainly necessary. And to offer a defense for those who don’t do it, it can be said that when someone davens with a Minyan, his obligation is satisfied if someone else in the Minyan did the contemplation beforehand etc.

    Synopsis

The custom is that on the first day of Rosh Chodesh Elul, “one blows for practice,” whereas the obligation to blow shofar begins on the second day of Rosh Chodesh. The reason is: the main time for teshuvah is during the month of Elul, which begins on the second day of Rosh Chodesh. On the other hand, the reason we need teshuvah in the first place is the fact that “Because of our sins, we were exiled from out land,” which is connected to the month of Av. At the same time, in the month of Av we find an aspect of “transforming their mourning into gladness,” which is the service of transforming unholiness. Therefore, the way to prepare for the teshuvah of the month of Elul is the “blowing for practice,” the teshuvah and transforming unholiness, in the manner of the thirtieth day of the month of Av, which is the first day of Rosh Chodesh Elul.

    Synopsis

Parashas Shoftim begins: “You shall set up judges and officers for yourself in all your gates…”: the role of a judge is to show the people how to behave, and the judges appoint officers to keep order in the city etc. The same applies to every Jewish house, where the head of the family is like a “judge” and “officer” with regards to his family’s conduct. Similarly, every Jewish child must be a “judge” and “officer” over his own behavior and over his own room, making sure everything in his room, his sefarim and his tzedakah box etc., are arranged in an orderly fashion (for example, the tzedakah box should be high up on Shabbos so he doesn’t touch it). And these “judges” and “officers” must be set up in “all your gates” – the “gates” being the eyes, ears, and mouth – making sure that only matters of Torah and mitzvos enter and exit through them. All this strengthens their connection to our Father in heaven, and in this fashion, every Jewish child’s room becomes a “Minor Mikdash,” and Hashem becomes his “Neighbor,” and moreover Hashem becomes the “Owner,” and obviously a “Neighbor” and “Owner” like that brings good gifts….

    Synopsis

Siman 7 of Iggeres Hakodesh discusses the idea of “the mitzvah in which one is especially vigilant.” Meaning, although Every Jew is obligated to keep all the mitzvos, nevertheless, everyone has a special mitzvah in which he is especially vigilant. As the Alter Rebbe writes, “And although every Jewish soul needs to be reincarnated in order to fulfill all 613 mitzvos, nevertheless this [heightened attention focused on a particular mitzvah] is necessary only for the sake of an additional increase, vigilance and zeal, with greater magnitude and greater vigor, doubled and redoubled above and beyond his vigilance in other mitzvos.” For example, while everyone is obligated to see to it that others engage in Torah and mitzvos, for a Rav, it’s a “mitzvah in which he must be especially vigilant.” In my father’s notes on the margins of his Tanya, he explains these three expressions, “increase, vigilance and zeal” according to Kabalah. In simple terms: “Increase” means one devotes himself to doing the mitzvah with his heart and soul; this comes from the attribute of love and kindness, the “right line.” “Vigilance” means fulfilling the negative mitzvos by refraining from what is forbidden; this comes from the attribute of severity and judgment, the “left line”. And “zeal” means that as soon as one decides to do a mitzvah, he incorporates it immediately into practice; this comes from the attribute of the “middle line,” which runs directly and unchanged from top to bottom.

    Synopsis

Today’s Sefer Hamitzvos (and Rambam) discusses how korbanos must be “whole” (unblemished) and “the choicest” (from the best one has). The lesson is: (1) Even when doing something holy, one must make sure nothing unholy gets mixed into it (e.g., when making a bracha before eating, one must also first make sure he isn’t eating anything not kosher); (2) a mitzvah must be done with “the choicest” – the best of what one has (for example, giving the best of his food to the poor) and the best of his ability (for example, devoting the morning, when one’s strength is renewed and fresh, to Hashem). This will hasten the coming of Moshiach when we will bring the korbanos in the Beis Hamikash.

    Synopsis

    (1) Though it’s been mentioned many times that one shouldn’t stare incessantly at a certain person, especially during davening when one must contemplate Hashem’s greatness and “Know before Whom you stand” etc. – it hasn’t helped, and quite the opposite. Therefore: from now on, either the elder Chassidim and the like will take care of the matter, or else I will have no choice but to do it myself… (2) It’s discussed in several places that a person is affected by what they see, and this is especially important when it comes to children. Therefore, effort should be made that when toys and children’s educational books and the like use pictures of animals, they should be kosher animals. Especially nowadays, when we are preparing for the coming of Moshiach, when “I will remove the spirit of impurity from the earth”: to prepare for that time of purity, it is important wherever possible to use only pure images, and moreover, holy ones.

    Synopsis

There are “mockers of the generation” who mock the mitzvah of mezuzah and the idea that through mezuzah, Hashem guards the home and everything inside it etc. But it says clearly in Shulchan Aruch: “It is a mitzvah to write the passages of Shema and Vehaya im Shamoa and affix them to the doorpost of the entrance. One must be very careful with this, and anyone who is careful, his days and the days of his children will be prolonged….” Moreover, the Gemara says in Sanhedrin: “Rabbi Elazar says: any city that has even one mezuzah does not become an ir hanidachas!” The fact that this Jew forgot all this is understandable, because he has (at least one) invalid mezuzah in his home! And his tefillin should be checked, too, because the problem results from a failure to “subjugate the heart and the mind.” But the real question is to those who are flustered by his statements and wonder what to respond; why are they so flustered? It says clearly in Shulchan Aruch: “Do not be ashamed before the scoffers.” Moreover, why don’t they remember these explicit statements in the Gemara and Shulchan Aruch about the greatness of mezuzah?
