The historical, anthropological and scientific communities are abuzz with each side staking claim to what they believe is the correct genetic or genealogical makeup of Lord Hanuman, a character from the Hindu epic Ramayana. All sides have been putting their opinions across after a 2-year long study but sources claim that they are far from reaching a consensus.
Hanuman is one of the principal characters in the Hindu book and occupies a very high status in the minds of the followers of the Hindu religion. Hanuman is believed to be the son of the wind god Vayu and is also worshipped as a God in his own right. In the Ramayana, Hanuman is described as a vanar (monkey) and is an ardent devotee of Lord Ram. It is his devotion to Lord Ram that has since become the gold standard for all Hindus to look up to.
Hanuman, also known by various other names like Bajrang Bali, Anjaneya, Pavanputra and Kapeeshwara, is one of the Chiranjeevis or immortals of Indian mythology. His abilities include superhuman strength, the ability to jump far distances/fly and also heal disease. Hanuman is also portrayed as a highly intelligent individual with knowledge of the Vedas but is also cursed with never being able to understand the true potential of his abilities. He is also a brahmachari or a celibate.
Hanuman Jayanthi or the birthday of Lord Hanuman was celebrated across the country on 27th April 2021. Certain states like Andhra Pradesh, Telengana and Karnataka will celebrate it on the 4th of June. As the birthday is based on the lunar calendar, there is no fixed day every year when this celebration will take place. Different parts of India have different customs and traditions associated with the event including fasts being observed and special poojas being conducted.
Hanuman is not only important in Indian folklore. Hanuman plays an important role in the legends and mythology of other South-East Asian countries like Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia.
The main topic of debate within the international circles is the classification of Lord Hanuman within a scientific parameter. Although described as a Vanar or a Monkey in the Ramayana, Hanuman depicts characteristics that are far advanced than what you would expect from a monkey. This includes the ability to speak, think rationally, make decisions and also being physically a far superior being to humans.
Our source who is a member of the committee which was given the responsibility of researching and coming to a final decision revealed to us that no decision has been taken so far. The various groups within the committee have their own opinions and are not relenting to accept a different point of view.
The experts who include scientists, anthropologists, archaeologists, historians and biologists claim that Hanuman was part of the Vanars which were a race of their own in the Ramayana. This proves that the vanars, including Hanuman, is what all archaeologists, scientists and researchers of the human race called the “missing link” in the theory of evolution.
