As Mohanlal, or the Complete Actor as he is known to fans, celebrates his 61st birthday today, the lockdown has put a damper into the usual high-intensity celebrations by his fans all over Kerala. Wishes have started pouring in from all quarters of the film industry and YouTube is already filled with fan-made tributes as this article goes into publication.
Mohanlal, who prefers to act in mainly Malayalam cinema, has also appeared in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films in a career spanning 40 years and 360 films. He is the recipient of 5 National Awards and 9 Kerala State Awards. He was also awarded the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019. He was also the first actor to be awarded the honorary title of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army.
Although starting his career in a negative role, he moved on and established himself as a bankable leading actor in the mid-1980s. Mohanlal then moved onto film production, distribution, playback singing and also dabbled with Television where he is the host of the Malayalam version of Bigg Boss. He also recently announced his foray into the world of film direction with the movie Barroz.
Lalettan, as he is fondly referred to by his fans, is constantly compared to the other giant of the Malayalam film industry, Mammootty and with whom he is known to share a great friendship off-screen. More than political, ideological or religious differences between the people of Kerala, the question that truly divides the Malayali into two camps is the question, “Are you a Mohanlal or Mammootty fan?”
On his birthday today, the All Kerala Mohanlal Fans Association is set to issue an international challenge to all aspiring and existing filmmakers around the world. Although this announcement is set to happen in the evening once the official website is live, our source who also happens to be an office-bearer in the association let us know more details of this contest.
This is an open invitation to anyone who thinks that they have a script or a character that they believe that Mohanlal cannot play.
Our source told us that every year they plan grand celebrations and throw amazing parties in major cities, but this year they decided to keep in mind the lockdown protocol in place and have a subdued celebration. “We are not politicians who can openly flout the very rules that they put in place”, he said referring to the completely mismanaged swearing-in ceremony of the new LDF government.
“We decided to restrict our celebrations to online platforms like Facebook, Whatsapp, Skype, Google Teams and Zoom. We started getting people from all over the world of various nationalities to join our discussion forums and saying how much they love our Lalettan. One of the discussions got a little heated when an American claimed that Daniel Day-Lewis was better than Lalettan. As per latest reports, there were over 42 laptops that were destroyed during that debate.”
“To put to rest any doubt that Lalettan was the best actor in the world, we are launching this platform where people can submit scripts for movies which they think that Lalettan will not be able to do justice to. We will pick 10 movies and start with the pre-production work to shoot and release the movies next year. The deadline for submissions is 30th June 2021.”
