Reflecting back on the Great Commission and implementing the VIM model, Dallas coaches us in the ways we can realign our church activities around the vision, intention, and means of character formation in Christian community. Dallas offers advice to his audience of young pastors that is important for all of us in looking at how we approach our job, our ministry, our work (which is different from our job or ministry) and our own life.

Kern Family Foundation Pastors Conference
Theme: Character Formation

 In session two of this 4-part 2010 series, Dallas emphasizes the centrality of knowledge to the Christian life. The historical drive against this view of Christianity is part of a battle for authority over public life. We have allowed our beliefs to be treated as “just faith” and need to reclaim the importance of the knowledge of reality that is contained in the teachings of Scripture. This is where we find the best answers to the Four Great Questions. The answer to the fourth question (how to become a good person, leads into a discussion of the makeup of the human personality and where our actions come from).

Dallas defines character as acquired essence. “It is your identity as shaped by your experiences, and especially your choices, and interaction with other people.”

The first session in this 4-part series will give us a good understanding of what character is and how it is affected by our beliefs about the essential questions that shape human life. Dallas points out that the Great Commission (Mt. 28:18-20) includes character formation: that’s what we’re doing when we make disciples and teach them to do everything Jesus said.

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
