  • Step By Step | BMS | Ep 027
The powerhouse trio is back in the studio this week with a conversation around the topic of Production. Danielle, Val, and Ani discuss how they've seen many artists try to skip the steps necessary for success, and instead concentrate more on their quest for celebrity status and money rather than on the craft itself. At the end of the day, there is no substitute for doing the daily work necessary to build a strong foundation and long-term success.

  • Slippery Slope of Entitlement | BMS | Ep026
For Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week's Episode…..POWER

In today's episode of Big Money Stylist, Danielle, Val, and Ani engage in an insightful conversation surrounding the topic of power, and how to successfully navigate the fine line that exists between power and entitlement.

Point #1: Fine Line Between Power and Entitlement
    • The ladies agree with Val who believes that "power is confidence in owning your shit and owning where you're at." While on the road to finding their power, Val believes that people tend to become a little too confident, which leads them to feel like things are owed to them. "That's the slippery slope and fine line. We want to empower artists to live their best life and stand up for themselves, but sometimes, once they find their power, they start becoming a little lazy and entitled."
    • Ani: The entire point of BMS is to empower someone to move forward to a better place – a place they love, and a place that they're completely obsessed with; that's literally the entire point. Unfortunately, entitlement sometimes comes along with power.  Danielle: When it's easy, people tend to take it for granted. If, for example, you're an assistant and somebody paves the way for you a little bit, making your path easier, that's when entitlement happens.
    QUESTION

How do you know when you've crossed the line from power to entitlement?

Point #2: Staying in the Loop
    • Danielle is constantly reminding herself to "be humble, dial it back in, and do the work. I think it's important to have a little bit of an ego to be able to push, teach, and move forward – to be able to do what we do – and then to be able to dial it back."
    • "If you get stuck in entitlement, you won't necessarily grow; you'll loop. You'll feel like you're growing fast, but you're just doing loops. I've experienced where I thought I was moving forward because I was working hard, but ended up going in circles. I think a lot of people confuse putting in the time with doing the actual work."
    QUESTION

Where in your world do you feel like you're staying in the loop – working like crazy, yet never moving forward?

    Point #3: Course Correction
    • Ani can attest to the fact that Garrett's course corrections can be a gnarly smack in the face; they're not delightful and dainty, but swift, direct and to the point. One of the Warrior's describes it this way: Whether I agree or disagree with what he's saying, I tell him, hey, thank you. That's literally the only way I can learn and grow. I then step back and ask myself, "If this is what he said to me, then what am I doing that's making it come across like that?"
    • Val: I'll be caught off guard at first, but then I step back and look at it from his perspective. What am I doing? What is my role? I can't change how anyone else is going to behave, but what I can change is myself and how I will react. Once you take on that accountability, it's so freeing, so many more opportunities open up, and with that, there's more room for growth.
    QUESTION

How do you handle course correction? Are you open to feedback?

Point #4:  Living in the State of Gratitude Opens Doors
    • Ani: Val and I are always sharing our gratitude with Garrett and Danielle, not to ass-kiss, but to express gratitude for opening doors and giving us the choice to step through them. We've literally run through every single door, every single time. As Garrett and I were listing the top five students, gratitude was the #1 trait they each exhibited. When I see gratitude show up in our students, I know they're going somewhere because of it.
    • Val: When I'm in a state of gratitude, acknowledging the smallest things I'm grateful for – when I stay in that place of gratitude, so many more opportunities open up for me. I learned early on that when I begin complaining and wondering why I'm not as successful as another person, it doesn't benefit me, so I never allow myself to go there. If your mindset doesn't shift from complaining and entitlement to gratitude, more opportunities won't open up for you and you'll continue staying in that same loop.
    QUESTION

Describe how you feel when you're in a state of gratitude, versus how you feel when you're in a state of entitlement.

Point #5: Paint a Clear Vision
    • After laying out the numbers and taking a thorough look at them, Garrett and Danielle made some commission changes at the salon recently. Val: I agree with Danielle when she talks about painting a clear vision of "if you just show up and do the art, then the rest of it will be taken care of." I love that about our salon. I get to go there and do amazing hair, and everything else is handled for me. I don't have to worry about the backend. There's a price tag on that and I'll happily pay it because I hate it so much.
    • Danielle: I literally lost sleep over this. For Garrett and I, we're in it too deep and will fucking figure it out – no matter what it takes. We've gone through the loop so many times that now, when we recognize we're in it, we realize, alright, shit's gotta change and we've got to collide. I think a lot of business owners will sacrifice themselves by continuing on, believing things will turn around. Yet, when they don't turn around and they realize they're fucked, everybody gets fired, and they close their doors.
    QUESTION

How do you respond to change and collision when it's unmistakably necessary?

    Quote of the Week:

"Always dial it back in. Always be willing to be humble. Work hard. Live your life with the energy of gratitude. You'll be surprised how doing little things like that will push you forward in life."

    — Danielle White

"Entitlement won't help you grow, so don't be entitled. Look at yourself. Be accountable. Nothing's going to get handed to you. If you work for something, you will grow; that's where you'll find your power. Where you won't find your power is in having an entitled attitude."

    –Valerie Plunk

"Go to your place where you feel calm and happy, where you feel like a king or a queen; go to that spot and take a good look at yourself, look inward and ask yourself: Where in your life do you know you have power, and where in your life have you been more entitled than anything else?"

  • One Step Back, Three Leaps Forward |BMS | Ep 025

Heads are rolling and things are about to get spicy as Danielle, Val, and Ani take on the hot topic of Protection in this week's episode of Big Money Stylist.

For Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week's Episode…..PROTECTION Point #1: Copycats
    • Val: We're keeping our brand and education safe and sacred; we don't want it getting watered down. The more it gets out there, the more copycats we have – but also the more eyes we have. We want people who are receiving NBR to have an amazing experience. That's why we're so protective of it.
    • Ani: Why the fuck is Sally Sue training other people? This has been a week of "all eyes everywhere." It's not just all of our eyes and ears, it's our students and artists as well. They have invested so much time, energy, blood, sweat, and tears into learning NBR and growing their business.
QUESTION: What are you doing to protect the quality of the NBR brand? Point #2: Protecting Your Work
    • Ani: We're seeing artists who at one point in time were learning NBR from Danielle. They didn't put in the work, started feeling entitled to something, and instead of thinking "I should do the work and get better," they decided to make a "new" method and claim that it's better, when in reality it's the same fucking thing as NBR.
    • Danielle: I used to lose sleep over this and I'd want to throw in the towel so many times. Now, it's not just about me, it's about the tribe we've built and all of our students. The only thing left to do is to protect, so we have a full-time lawyer on our team. As many copycats and crap that's going on out there, and as much as we're protecting it, my main goal is to focus on a quality experience.

QUESTION: How does doing the work protect you?

Point #3: Edit and Course Correct
    • Val: I want my assistant to thrive and succeed, but I'm always looking at things from the perspective of looking out for my family. You have to remember that you're running a business. With girls, everything gets so emotional, but it's okay to say this isn't working. If it's not serving me or helping my business grow and I'm in the protective mindset, it's easy for me to make non-emotional decisions.
    • I'm constantly self-evaluating. If something's not working, I course correct and change it. I never want to get comfortable, so I'm constantly cross-checking myself and editing so I can keep growing.
QUESTION: Where in your life could you use some course correction and editing? Point #4: What Are Your Numbers Telling You?
    • Danielle: So many stylists are so into the art that they don't know their numbers and think they're making more than they really are. We teach our students all the time that you have to know your numbers and that you can't be that business owner who is ignorant. If you're a salon owner and are merely breaking even, what's the point?
    • Ani: Garrett and Danielle came to us recently about the numbers with DKW. "Here are the numbers. This isn't working and we have to course correct. This is what we're going to do – you have the option to stay or leave. We want you to stay, so if you're in, that's great; if you're out, we still love you." That's not something that's easy for people or business owners to do, but is so necessary.
QUESTION: Where in your life or business are you ignoring the numbers? Point #5: Protect Your Mindset
    • Danielle: People listen to the voices in their head telling them all the reasons why they can't do something, which keeps them small. It's hard at first, but the ones who are willing to push through those voices are the ones that make it.
    • Don't ever doubt yourself, just push forward and protect your mindset. You have to get to a peaceful place inside of you, tune out the noise, and power through. It's so important that you protect your mindset so that you don't self-sabotage.
QUESTION: What steps do you take to protect your mindset? Quote of the Week:

"The topic of protection makes or breaks a lot of areas of your life. If you're not protecting one area of your life and you're falling short, it ultimately spills into every other area."

    — Danielle White

"If I give all of me wherever I am and protect that space, I feel like I succeed better."

    –Valerie Plunk

"A lot of times in life, we don't think we're worth it and we tend to keep playing small because of it. I feel like it's something we have to constantly course correct. You have to protect every little piece of you because the minute you stop, that's when shit starts going sideways."

  • Let Go and Let It Grow | BMS | Ep 024

On the heels of their first million-dollar event, Danielle and the ladies have a conversation around the topic of Profit, and how it is revealed in many ways, not only monetarily.

For Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week's Episode.....PROFIT Point #1: #growth
    • Coach Ani: Six months ago, we stood in front of a room of 165 empty chairs and we were like, "Oh fuck, do you see all of these chairs? There’s going to be a person in every fucking chair!" This time we had double the size of that, and as we looked over the audience, Val turned to me and said, "This is it?"
    • Coach Val: Leaving my kids, being in front of people, putting myself out there and teaching - none of it is my natural state. If you know how painfully shy I am, and how much I hate being in the spotlight, I was not only totally fine, I really enjoyed the whole process. So the fact that I did it and enjoyed it, I was like yay! All the hard work is paying off. If I can grow at this rate, anyone can!

QUESTION: Where in your world are you currently doing something that at one time seemed impossible for you, but has now become almost second nature?

Point #2: It's in the Numbers
    • Danielle: This was our first million-dollar event! The numbers and the money have to be important. If you don’t know your numbers and you’re not moving forward, what’s the point? As a mom with two kids, I wouldn’t fucking do this if there was no profit.
    • Coach Ani: If we don't look at the numbers, we have no idea how to course correct or what we can do to improve. I feel like numbers are part of protection and profit. You have to know your numbers in order to move forward and grow.

QUESTION: How has taking the time to know your numbers been a game changer for you? What changes have you made as a result?

    Point #3: Walk the Talk
    • Coach Val: After the convention, I got some clarity about how I have been complicating things again, squeezing in more clients, and working more hours at night when I don't need to. By the time I get home, my husband says I'm like a Zombie. It’s hard to let go of something when you enjoy it, but in order for me to live what we're teaching, it's time for me to reel it back in.
    • Danielle: In BMS, we teach that profit is reflected in other areas of life, and not only in a dollar figure. Because it's hard to let go of the art, the clients, and money, we tend to burn ourselves out. But in order to live what we preach, we have to figure out how to be in that place of managing and delegating so we can actually have a good life. It’s about owning and creating that balance.

QUESTION: What can you do today to create more balance in your life between work and home?

    Point #4: Letting Go
    • Coach Ani: I admit I’m a complete control freak, especially when it comes to everything inside of BMS. I've spent so much time creating and building it, I swear there are little pieces of my soul inside of it. Having an assistant has been a game changer, and for me, that’s such a big profit. Having an extra set of hands has freed up space for me to create more.
    • Danielle: When you have that assistant - and when you let go - you’ll be a new you. You think you’re letting go of power and that you’re not going to be as powerful, but you'll find that you become even more powerful. You’re going to get to this weird space where everything on the checklist is done, your mind goes quiet, and it opens up space for you to create something new or different.

QUESTION: Where in your life have you been feeling that tug to let go?

    Point #5: Freedom and Time
    • Coach Val: When Danielle and I were on stage talking about being moms and missing out on a lot of things, we received a lot of messages from the artists. One said that when she gets back, she’s letting her clients know she is no longer working Saturday’s. "I’ve been putting my clients in front of my children. No more! Not one more fucking day!" I love when artists take a stand for themselves, their family, and their time.
    • Coach Ani: When the convention first started, we each were on stage telling a little about our story. Garrett asked one of the artists what they wanted. "Freedom." That describes me to a T. I am so fiercely independent. I had let my clients dictate so much of everything that I did- the time, the energy, the days, the money. Never again will I let someone dictate my life. I want to do what I want, when I want, and how I want -  be damned what everybody else thinks.

QUESTION: Where in your world is it time to take a stand for your life?

    Quote of the Week:

"Entrepreneurs and people that work really hard get so addicted to the grind, and I get that. But if your company is moving forward and you’re able to enjoy life, for me, that’s profitable."

    -- Danielle White

"When you spread yourself too thin, you’re not multitasking, you’re giving everybody shitty pieces of you. You're trying to survive and you're barely getting through the day instead of thriving. You have to find that sweet spot so you have that space to create."

    -- Valerie Plunk

"I tell our students that if it seems like we have our life together, I’m so sorry. I’m still a student inside of this."

    -- Anianne Rivera

  • Your Next Step is Go! | BMS | Ep 023

On the heels of a wildly successful BMS Convention, Danielle and Coach Ani are back in the studio having a candid conversation about Production in this week’s episode of Big Money Stylist, which continues to top the charts as the #1 podcast in the category of Fashion & Beauty in iTunes.

For Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week’s Episode…..PRODUCTION Point #1: Production = Action
    • Coach Ani: Production is doing the actual work that’s required in order to move forward. We love that you’re listening to us, but it doesn’t actually count as ‘the work.’ The work is what you do behind and in front of the chair to grow your business, not just listening to a podcast.
    • Danielle: Many people tell us how motivating we are, yet if you’re not actually doing the work, it doesn’t matter that we make you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. A lot of people will tell me they’ve changed their mindset, yet you have to have the work to follow up with.
QUESTION: What does Prouction mean to you? Point #2: The Choice
    • Danielle: BBMSCon 2 was so amazing and was filled with so much good insanity. I launched my brand seven years ago and didn’t really take it seriously until the last two years. I literally want to impact the entire industry.
    • Coach Ani: To think this all started with you, Danielle. We had 350 artists inside of one room to learn NBR and to learn business systems and processes – and this all started with you making one choice 7 years ago.
QUESTION: Looking back, what is one choice you have made that has entirely changed your life? Point #3: Reps Bring Success
    • Danielle: We can only teach what we have experienced. You have to be willing to put in the work. I used to be that asshole who thought that all I needed was a new camera lens, then I’d be an amazing photographer. That’s a starting point, but first, you have to actually commit, which is the biggest thing we stress at the events.
    • You have to throw yourself in the mix and know that part of that is fucking it up, learning from that, and moving on. You can’t put a price tag on experience and reps. We always tell our students – just get some reps under your belt with NBR, marketing, and photography.
QUESTION: What one area of your life could use more reps? Point #4: Do the Work
    • Coach Ani: We’re not here to save you, we’re here to help and guide and push you. The path has been paved. There are so many people that have walked that path and have succeeded. There’s proof.  But if you have to be willing to do the work.
    • Danielle: You have to let go of your ego and submit to whoever the teacher is at that moment. If you’re taking a class and submit to the process, you will learn and grow more as an individual. You just will. I’m here, I’m going to do the work, I’m going to submit to the process, even when your ego steps in. If you submit, you will be successful.
QUESTION: What area in your life are you committed to doing the work consistently? What are the results you want to achieve in that area?

    Point #5: Grant Yourself Permission
    • Danielle: Once we saw the amount of work both of our businesses had done, we knew it was doable, but we had to give ourselves permission to say, “This is the new version of me, we’re not going back.” It forces you to level up your life even more.
    • Ani: I used to think how cool it would be to have a convertible and drive it up and down PCH. That’s all I ever wanted. I saw the Mazaradi, my dream car and I had this conversation with myself, “You can’t do that, that’s insane.” Then I said, “Wait, why can’t I? I work hard, I live by the beach, this is what I’ve always wanted, don’t I deserve it? Yes, you fucking do.”
QUESTION: What is something you need to give yourself permission to do? Quote of the Week:

“When you’re put in a place where ‘it’s on me,’ I believe most people will rise. It’s crazy for me to think how unwilling we are as human beings to put ourselves in situations where we can rise, and step out of fear of failure.”

    — Danielle White

“The life I lead now is such a reflection of the amount of work I put into everything.”

    –Anianne Rivera

  • Step Into Your Power | BMS | Ep 022

What could actually change inside your life if you made the decision to step forward and own your power? Join Coach Ani and Coach Val in their passionate conversation around the topic of Power in this week's episode of the Big Money Stylist Podcast.

For Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week's Episode.....POWER Point #1: What is Power?
    • Coach Val: For me, power is finding my confidence and then standing strong in that power as it propels me into the direction I want to go. I am loving this journey, and I love pushing myself beyond my comfort zone.
    • Coach Ani: Something we see all of the time in the students who come into our programs is the attitude of "I wish I could, I want to, but it's not for me, my husband won't let me, etc." It's actually them retreating from a lack of power. Once they make a decision to stand in their power, they are never the same person.

QUESTION: What does Power mean to you?

    Point #2: I Want a Jill
    • Coach Val: This phrase has been coined as a result of my training Jill. This keeps me on my toes and keeps me wanting to make the training a valuable experience for her. It's not enough for me to reach a new level and then stay there, I have to keep wanting more, growing more, and being more so I can keep inspiring others and leading the way.
    • One of my constant struggles is saying "yes" and putting myself out there because it's so easy for me to revert back to playing small. It's really uncomfortable for me to be open and vulnerable, and to be in the limelight. Taking those baby steps is a daily decision that doesn't come naturally for me, but the feedback and the results from our students keep pushing me forward so I can grow even faster.

QUESTION: What is a factor in your continual growth?

    Point #3: Turning Points
    • Coach Ani: As I look back on my journey, I'm able to recognize how certain decisions have been huge turning points in my life. I see how there are so many turning points in everything that we do. Warrior Week for Women is going to require a version of me that's never before existed - it's not the version of Ani that does hair or who trains on the systems of marketing. This is a whole different ballgame. And all of this pushes me to want to continually get better.
    • Coach Val: When I moved my family to the beach, it was a move that didn't make any sense financially, or in any way. The kids were in the middle of a school year and at this point, I was assisting Danielle making an assistant's salary. But that feeling came over me of knowing that if we moved, more opportunities were going to open up. Within three weeks of saying it out loud, we made the move.

QUESTION: As you look back over your life, what are some significant turning points?

Point #4: As the World Turns
    • Coach Ani: Finding power isn't just a one-time thing. You start out with version 1.0 of yourself. When you step into decisions that aren't easy, you become a new version of yourself and the old you dies. The world keeps moving - everything is growing, shifting and changing. If you're not going forward, you're going backward. There's no such thing as stagnant because the world doesn't stay still.
    • Coach Val: When I get clarity and find that power for myself, that spills into other areas of my life  - with my husband, my kids, with family and friendships. It's so crazy how having power in one area spills over into another. I've changed as a person because of that power.

QUESTION: How has becoming a new version of yourself changed the trajectory of your life?

Point #5: Did You Make the Edit?
    • Coach Val: When you find your power, the quality of your life gets better. You start tolerating less bullshit because you're that much more clear about what you want. The more power you find, the more clarity you gain, and then you begin editing out anything and anyone that doesn't fit the vision of your life.
    • Coach Ani: It's not like you're editing and making your bubble smaller and smaller. I feel like our bubbles are so big because we have such a large capacity. At the end of the day, it's about the decisions you make. Every single decision you make will take you down a different path, and will either give you more power or take power away.

QUESTION:Who and what have you edited out of your life after gaining clarity and making the decision that you will no longer tolerate bullshit?

    Quote of the Week:

"Even though I get in my head and slow myself down, I'm always working toward that vision I saw of BMS. I want to encourage you to follow those moments where you have a vision. Don't just brush them to the side, follow those visions, even if you're scared."

    -- Valerie Plunk

"Take a look at your life: Where have you been avoiding taking power of something in your life because you're scared, nervous, and unsure? What is it that you're avoiding? What could actually change inside your life if you made the decision to step forward and own your own shit?"
