Bloody Halloween Music Special

The Bloody Halloween Music Special features as the first ever bonus episode of The Dark Corner Podcast. Herein, DJ Evil Dave presents ten select tracks. Moreover, each has the common theme of blood. Mostly, the artists fall into the category of dark electro. However, Dave includes some post punk. Also, he includes gothic rock and dark hip hop. Additionally, Dave rips into Apple and visits with an online friend.

Catalina

Dave updates his MacBook Pro to Catalina and suffers the consequences. First, Apple Music hasn’t as useful a search function as iTunes. Second, Audacity no longer recognizes microphone inputs. Finally, the obsolescence of the iPod for one unhappy Dave.

In this Bloody Halloween Music Special, Dave presents the following ten songs. That is, he starts with some dark electro. First, Divergent:13 performs Bleeding Sun (Cutoff:Sky Remix) from equinox. News

Our friend, Chris Bodily of Hatrobot, has created a graphic novel. Black Lantern is a Halloween themed comic book series. That is, it features a pumkinhead, a rockabilly witch, and a talking cat that can see ghosts. While the Kickstarter reached its goal, many rewards remain open until the 31st of October.

Reviews

First, we review the grounded science-fiction film, Ad Astra. Mainly, we contrast its internal story of father and son with its outer space setting. Also, we review a couple of creepy television shows. That is, we watch the first two episodes of Creepshow. We address both the pulp fiction and the existential horror elements of this anthology series. Meanwhile, Brandi celebrates the practical effect. Also, we watch the first two episodes of Evil. In this CBS series, a forensic psychologist aids a couple of assessors as they investigate religious claims of possession and miracles.

The Dark Track

Arts of Erebus perform Death Shall Have No Dominion (Vocal Mix) from On the Edge of Insanity (CD Edition). Arts of Erebus call both France and Germany home. They perform emotional gothic rock throughout Central Europe.

The Tarot: XIII Death

First, the tarot provides a useful tool for meditation. Second, The Death card suggests a transformation and very rarely an actual, physical death. In the point, we explore the symbolism of the Death card. That is, we explain the skeleton, the white horse, and the dead king to name just a few symbols. Also, we delve into the card’s numerology. Finally, we point out representations of death in pop culture.

Additionally, Brandi plays Final Fantasy VIII. Also, we revisit Star Trek: The Motion Picture on the big screen.

News and Reviews

At FanX Fall 2019, Dave could not find a taiji sword at any of the many sword vendors. However, Brandi enjoys playing Final Fantasy VIII on her Playstation 4. Mostly, we enjoyed revisiting Star Trek: The Motion Picture on the big screen. That is, this is the first time Brandi has seen it in the cinema. Meanwhile, we pick up on some aspects of the film for the first time.

The Dark Track

Dave forms a new agreement with a publicist to bring you this episodes Dark Track. That is, B.F.G. formed as a post-punk band in Manchester during the summer of 1985. Of the ten tracks offered, Dave chose Anonymous. It appears on the 1989 album, Blue.

The Feminine Critique

The Feminine Critique podcast reviews two movie an episode. For example, The hosts, Emily and Christine, view each film from unique perspectives. That is, Emily enjoys pulp, exploitation, and really cheap and bad movies. Meanwhile, Christine values writing and performance.

Diversity in Discovery

In the Point, we discuss diversity casting in Discovery. That is, we illustrate how Discovery represents women, racial minorities, LGBTQ characters, the disabled, mental illness and alien races. For example, Sonequa Martin-Green plays Michael Burnham. Not only is she a woman of color, she also plays a foster child of Vulcan and human parents. Meanwhile, Wilson Cruz plays Dr. Hugh Culber, a gay person of color who also carries the burden of someone resurrected from the dead. Brandi and Dave talk about even more characters and the actors that portray them.

FanX Fall 2019

The Dark Corner Podcast reports from FanX Fall 2019. That is, we share our experiences of attending Salt Lake City’s comic and pop culture convention. for instance, we attend panels and meet celebrities. Also, we shop and vendor booths and visit artist’s alley. for instance, Brandi commissions art for her Dungeons and Dragons character and we buy dice. .Also, we grab something to eat as well as admire all the cosplay. Speaking of, Brandi has her picture taken as the 13th Doctor.

Day 1

Brandi receives her special guest badge. Meanwhile, Dave discovers a short cut when going back to the car for his iPhone. Also, we meet Amy, Hayley and Zachary of Trek.fm. Furthermore, we bump into our friend, Allen. We meet with Brandi’s sister at the Droid Builders booth. mostly, we get our bearings and prepare for Day 2. However, we do buy a commemorative mug with free refills of root beer.

Day 2

We begin at celebrity row. That is, we meet Carlos Valdes from The Flash and Jason Isaacs from Star Trek: Discovery and Harry Potter. Also, we attend the celebrity spotlights for each in the grand ballroom. However, we had to duck out of the Jason Isaacs spotlight so Brandi could moderate on a panel. That is, Brandi hosts a panel on diversity in Star Trek. Afterwards, we share a burrito and walk the convention floor. Finally, we end day two by attending a panel on John Carpenter’s The Thing.

Day 3

We relax and take our time on the third day. For instance, we refill our mug of root beer. Also, Brandi chats with artists and their families. Also, Brandi falls in love with a plush Godzilla. Eventually, Brandi meets up with author, Jonathan Maberry, and finds out some scuttlebutt regarding an upcoming film and a Netflix series. Also, with the birth of Star Trek: Discovery art, Brandi commissions a bearded Spock from the Relics Comics booth. Finally, we attend a panel on the new Picard series.

The Dark Track

Finally, we end the show with a dark track. Damsel in the Dollhouse is the brainchild of Nina Tucciarelli from Montana. She performs Villains off the Feast of Villains album. Eerie synth pads contribute to this electro-industrial piece.

Tin Anniversary

It is our 10th anniversary of podcasting. As such, The Dark Corner Podcast celebrates with tin. That is, we talk at length about the soft, shiny metal. However, we provide a jumping on point for new listeners. For instance, we introduce ourselves and share our stories. Also, Dave gives updates on his computer issues. Furthermore, we review a musical play and several streaming tv series. On top of that, we have shout outs and a Dark Track.

News

Dave has a massive hard drive failure. For example, a new hard drive failed to mount. Also, an old hard drive converted files so they can no longer be accessed. Therefore, Dave shares his grief and frustration. however, there is hope as some files were stores on an even older hard drive. Meanwhile, many music downloads remained on the hard disk for the laptop.

Reviews

We review The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. For instance, we discuss the new theater in Centerville. Brandi shares how she knows one of the cast. Overall, is well acted and the song and dance numbers entertain. Meanwhile, the show has both funny and sad moments. Additionally, it features some audience participation.

In television, we wish GLOW had a little more wrestling. However, we enjoyed the social commentary and the character subplots. Also, we found Wu Assassins fun and exciting with amazing fight scenes. However, it has limited special effects and Dave found they were fast and loose with five element theory. Finally, we dip into the first two episodes of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Mostly, he praise its use of puppetry and fantastic art direction.

The Dark Track

Sweet Spectra from Santiago de Chile perform Fleshless. The traditionally gothic track features loads of reverb and guitar feedback. You can find this on the HISPANO-LATINO AMERICAN Gothic compilation.

The Greatest Generation

Once again, we air a promo for The Greatest Generation, a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine podcast on the Maximum Fun network. This clip features a song celebrating the drunk episodes.

Tin

In the point, we talk about tin. We get into the specifics of this element on the periodic table. Also, we get into different types of tins. That is, we discuss the shiny beta tin, and the dull alpha tin. Additionally, we show hoe tin is used in technology, from plating ships to providing electronic video screens. Moreover, we show how tin influences language and cultures. Finally, we list appropriate tin gifts for a 10th anniversary.

100 Albums

We celebrate 100 episodes of The Dark Corner by listing 100 albums. That is, we each list 50 albums of note. Meanwhile, Brandi and Dave approach their lists differently. Also, we speak briefly about each album. Furthermore, we have time for shout outs and a Dark Track to end the show.

Brandi’s List

Brandi includes albums that reward multiple listens. Mainly, she lists metal bands such as Ayreon, Within Temptation and HIM. Also, she lists soundtracks to Hamilton, Five Guys Named Moe and Star Trek Discovery. Additionally, she mentions popular bands like Muse, The Killers and Imagine Dragons. However, she surprises with Duncan Sheik, My Darkest Days and Madonna. She rounds out her list with personal selections from Green Day, Blue October and My Chemical Romance.

Dave’s List

Dave started his list with 100 songs and pared them down to 50. Dave focuses mostly on gothic and industrial bands. For instance, he lists Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Alternately, he lists Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly and KMFDM. Moreover, he lists live albums by Einstürzende Neubauten, Switchblade Symphony and Rammstein. A few surprise albums survived the culling. That is, Dave lists albums by Rasputina, Pouppée Fabrikk and Abney Park. Meanwhile, Dave lists a few nostalgic picks. For instance, he lists albums by Thee Clash, Duran Duran and Led Zeppelin.

What sets them apart from other bands is the introduction of a second bass player. For example, this leads to a heavier and more oppressive sound overall.

Three improvisers bring on special guests in this fantasy themed interview podcast. That is, Arnie, Chunt and Usidore the Blue meat strange characters as they travel the magical land of Foon. Season 3 is a great jump on point for Hello from the Magic Tavern.

Stranger Things 3

Mainly, we review season 3 of Stranger Things. That is, we look at the adult, teenager, and kid storylines. For instance, we see how the kids struggle with an interest in the opposite sex. Meanwhile, we see how Nancy resists under a sexist employer. Furthermore, we shake our heads at how Hopper slips back into toxic behavior. All the while, we see how Russian agents plan to benefit from the upside-down. Finally, we see the Mind Flayer as it rampages through Hawkins.

Into the Spider Verse features as our movie commentary this episode. Therefor, Brandi returns to the Dark Corner Podcast. That is, she joins Dave to talk over one of her favorite movies. For instance, we talk about animation and comic book history. Meanwhile, we look at the various representations of Spider-man.

We start with a little banter. For instance, Brandi prepare some home made chili. Also, we tell you when to sync your copy of Into the Spider Verse with our commentary. We praise the animation style. That is, we compare it to pop art and comic book illustrations. Dave notes the different designs in the characters. For instance, he mentions how the art of Bill Sienkiewicz inspired Kingpin.
