  • AOA 061 | Steven Essa | Creating Kickass Webinars
Do you love adventure and entrepreneurship? So do I! In fact, I have an amazing retreat coming up in Bali! Find out more here.

ave you even been really surprised to find out that some 'trivial' piece of information you know ended up being really important to someone else? I find this every day when people ask me about presenting or podcasting or how to start a business. The moral is...people want to learn what you know!

Today's guest on the Art of Adventure podcast is a great facilitator of helping teachers and creators sell what they know.

Steven Essa is one of the world's leading trainers on how make great webinars that help you sell your knowledge, in the form of an online course, training, coaching, product, etc.

He has a great story in this episode about how at his live two day events, he will spend one day teaching about webinars, pick someone from the audience, set up a webinar for them, and the next day run the webinar live and create $2,000 - $23,000 in sales. Clearly this is a powerful tool.

I couldn't believe the amount of improvisation Steven did around the "test case" webinar we were referring to in the episode, which is an actual webinar that I want to give next week for scientists and grad students about presenting skills. He is so pro, he even came up with the patented "cheeky grin technique" for being more charismatic when you are presenting. It was like witnessing Don Draper in action.

If you are someone who already has a course, training, or coaching, or you want to get into teaching others what you know, this episode will blow your socks off with how powerful and easy it is to run a webinar and get people what they need.

    Quotes:

"Content is number one - you have to deliver amazing information" - Steven Essa

"You can't say the wrong thing to the right person" - Steven Essa

"People want to be led, you can order them to participate" - Steven Essa

"Tell the story of what led you to teach this webinar today" - Steven Essa

What you will learn in this episode:

-The tested framework for the most successful webinars

-How to come up with a great webinar title

-How to tell the story of yourself and why you are doing the webinar

-How to describe who the webinar is for

-How to talk about the benefits of your product or course at the end of the webinar

-How to craft the perfect call to action

    -How to set prices

-How to work towards higher priced products ($10,000 course or coaching)

    Mentioned in this episode:

    The X 10 Effect

  • AOA 060 | Dave Cornthwaite | Say Yes To Adventure
Today's guest on the Art of Adventure Podcast is 11/25 of the way through his quest to complete 25 journeys of a thousand miles or more, each via a different mode of non motorized transport. I was really excited to hear that one of his favorite journeys so far ended in my hometown of St. Louis!

Dave Cornthwaite has swum the length of the Missouri River and paddle boarded the Mississippi. He has also written three books, entertained audiences on six continents, broken eight world records, and is the founder of www.SayYesMore.com.

His new project "Out of Office" takes him around to amazing "office" locations around the world. The only stipulation is that he is not allowed to plan anything more than 10 days in advance, and he barters for all his lodging, food, and transport.

I caught up with Dave at Bambu Indah, a boutique luxury eco lodge here in Ubud where he was making a video about the place. Check it out, it's pretty epic.

Dave is a really down to earth guy, and a great story teller, I appreciate how thoughtful and real he was in this interview.

  • AOA 059 | Millionaire Mindset: Habits For A Rich Life
Welcome to another solo round of The Art of Adventure Podcast! Lots of folks have been asking me to do an episode on millionaires and the rich mindset for a while, so here you go!
This episode comes after a multi year study of dozens of books about millionaires and the rich. Now that I have the privilege of interacting with millionaires on a daily basis, I have distilled down some of the major commonalities from the top books and my mentors.
Some of these books are a hundred or more years old! Some of them are quite recent. While the shape of wealth and business is constantly shifting, I hope to share some of the lasting truisms of wealth as I understand them.
I'm not a millionaire yet so I can't back these ideas up with my own proof, they are simply a collection of observations and ideas that I have seen and try to cultivate for myself.

    Mindset
You might recognize this as one of the top themes from the first 50 episodes. Get comfortable being uncomfortable so you can make a big ask or go out on a limb when you need to.  Results come from action, which comes from whether you decide to take action, so before anything can happen you have to think it. The right mindset also means having a purpose - a reason why you are doing something, and a clear image of what it will look like. You would never build a building without a plan, so what is your blueprint for success?  Also, you have to believe you deserve the wealth you seek.

You have to actually deserve it.
Beyond believing you deserve the good life...from what I have seen, nobody is getting wealthy that didnâ€t deserve it, i.e. they solved a big problem or helped a lot of people solve theirs.  If you help make a ton of people rich, you will probably get rich too. If you solve a lot of problems, you will probably get rich.
    Creative solutions, lots of ideas
Because rich people have broad and deep knowledge and are not operating from a place of fear, their solutions to problems are creative (remember when you made creative deals in monopoly?) and that is a great way to uncover huge value that is closed to others. Giving good ideas away helps everyone and makes you valuable. When you have plenty of ideas (i.e. practice brainstorming) you come not from a place of fear, but from a place of abundance. Try thinking "How can I have my cake and eat it to?"
    Learn rich social skills
People like people similar to them. Most rich people are ridiculously positive.  You can be positive too! Learn where rich people hang out so you can meet them there. Learn the things they like to do and think about: travel, charity, playing chess, tennis, cycling, investing, entrepreneurship, etc., so you have something to talk to them about.  Rich people like to talk about big ideas, not gossip about people or talk material possessions, so practice talking about ideas every day. Maybe try not complaining too.
Setting good habits as a foundation.
If you spend more of your time doing useful, productive, money making activities than not, you can build wealth. This usually means cutting out some nonsense time when you are consuming rather than creating. You need to always have a sharp prepared mind and body, so when you sleep well, eat well, relax and fully rest, it means you can work harder when you need to, duh. For the important relationships in your life - set up a habit and a schedule to think about them and get in touch with them.
    Your surroundings are important
Your physical location brings you into contact with different people and ideas. The places you go on the internet bring the same contact. If you need to physically move to a new city or get new friends or...

  • AOA 056 | Michael Margolis | Storytelling For Business
Storytelling is one of those buzz words that is guaranteed to make me perk up my ears! I meet dozens of people every day on my travels and I am always trying to figure out the best way to tell my story.
Today's guest on the Art of Adventure Podcast is the founder of the world's leading school for business storytelling, Get Storied. I first encountered Michael Margolis a couple years back when I was just starting the Art of Adventure blog, and I needed to figure out how to write a good bio (not too braggy, and not apologizing for who I am).
Then, while in grad school, I had several hours a day of time where I was peering into an electron microscope, so of course I got really into listening to The Moth, and Porchlight Storytelling Podcasts.
Michael has a really interesting back story about how he became a story teller including up and moving to a new continent from Switzerland when he was a nine.  He turned to storytelling to help overcome his fear of social rejection.
Make sure you listen close to find out the storytelling principle behind Michaels "Chocolate secret", how sharing that he thinks chocolate is a food group encourages people to connect with him online (if you love chocolate like Michael and I, you should check out my search for the worlds best chocolate).
This episode is for adventurous entrepreneurs, digital nomads, authors, speakers, coaches, businesses with an online presence, or you simply want to get your message out to people in a way they can relate to.

"Storytelling is the source code of humanity" - Michael Margolis

"You can only take people as far as you have gone yourself" - Michael Margolis

"Everyone wants to know: are you selling to me or are you helping me?" - Michael Margolis

"Consider this: Before any business meeting, you have been Googled"- Michael Margolis
