  • AOA 072 | Jason Treu | How To Build Extraordinary Relationships
"Create an experience with people" - Jason Treu
I know that all the jobs I have ever had in my life, I got through a personal connection. People are attached to just about every good result you want out of life: a raise, funding your company, providing you with emotional support, finding a romantic partner, going on adventures with you, getting your book published, or being your customers and clients.
This is why I spend so much time focusing on the skills of creating and maintaining valuable relationships. Today's guest on the Art of Adventure is one of the best at this.
I read his book, Social Wealth, on building relationships last year, and it quickly became one of my top resources for connecting with people.
He coaches high performing individuals in networking, charisma, personal branding, and business leadership.
This is a guy who backs up his knowledge with action. At the end of the interview when I asked him who else he thought I should talk to, I was really impressed with how easily and quickly he thought of his connections that would be perfect for me, and then offered an introduction.
You can tell that he is a really outgoing individual, who also understands what it is like for introverts and inexperienced networkers.
I liked his ideas so much that when I was in Boulder, CO recently, I stole one of his best ideas and hosted a dinner for everyone I knew there.
Welcome to episode 72 with the genius of networking and relationship building, my friend Jason Treu (pronounced "Troy").

  • AOA 071 | Chris McDougall | Natural Born Heroes – Maximizing Human Performance
"Turn running into play" - Chris McDougall
I am super excited for this episode because my guest is one of my personal adventure heroes! He is the very definition of a curious explorer, and all his work ties back into the simple truth of having fun being a human.
Chris McDougall is perhaps best know for his phenomenal 2009 book, Born to Run, where he explores running as a human birthright, by following the Tarahumara indians of Copper Canyon, Mexico. Born to Run is one of the main reasons I started eating chia seeds and got back into train running when I lived in Montana. Born to Run is also currently being made into a movie with Matthew McConaughey.
Chris has another amazing new book out in Natural Born Heroes which tells a further story of Cretan resistance runners in WWII, parkour, and human performance.
This episode was a ton of fun for me, as Chris and I share a lot of common interests. We go over both his books, and broadly covers diet, running, athletic performance, movement, evolution, and mindset. I think you will be fascinated at how many different ideas Chris can bring into the conversation. If you are at all interested in optimal human performance, running, or health, this is the episode for you!

  • AOA 068 | Jeremy Moon | Icebreaker: Bringing Merino Wool To The World
"I seek out people who inspire me" - Jeremy Moon

When I first arrived in New Zealand last month I did a quick informal survey of my Kiwi friends about who the most interesting people in NZ were that I should have on the show. The one name that came up most frequently is today's guest!

Jeremy Moon is the founder of Icebreaker , a New Zealand based merino wool clothing company started in 1994, which now sells clothing in over 4700 stores world wide. The New Zealand Herald named Jeremy as one of the country's top business leaders, and Icebreaker has been the subject of two Harvard Business School case studies.

Today, we are going to get into the early development of the business, including how Jeremy used word of mouth marketing and generated hype among the New Zealand outdoor gear retailers. We will also get into the initial business and financial structure, and why merino works as a good product in the first place.

Icebreaker is also known for it's Baacode, an innovation that allows you to track which wool station (farm) in New Zealand your garment came from, so you can see the living conditions of the animals. When I surveyed my Kiwi friends before the interview about what they wanted to know about Icebreaker, they all said sustainability, so I asked Jeremy to discuss the importance of environmental impacts, social ethics, manufacturing ethics, and animal welfare.

This is a fabulous story of seeing a great market opportunity, and steadily growing a business to be the widely acclaimed, sustainable, international brand it is today.

    Quotes:

"I've never not had people who are actively shaping my world view" - Jeremy Moon
