  • Fighting for Renters' Rights
Community organizers are trying to create the Detroit Tenants Association aimed at helping renters facing eviction and other housing concerns. Axios Detroit reports renters and advocates gathered at Spirit Plaza in downtown Detroit yesterday (Sun) to learn how to take action against predatory landlords. City Council Member Angela Whitfield Calloway says her team is working on amending the rental compliance ordinance to ensure enforcement among landlords. She told the crowd she has personally experienced eviction more than once. The call to create the association comes after several renters spoke at City Council meetings earlier this year asking for help as federal aid for a hotel program that housed renters facing eviction came to an end. Detroit is a majority renter city.

  • Judge declares mistrial in dispute over liability in Flint Water Crisis
A judge has declared a mistrial in a dispute over partial liability for the Flint Water Crisis. The jury couldn’t reach a verdict after hearing months of evidence against two engineering firms, Veolia North America and Lockwood, Andrews & Newman. The companies were accused of not doing enough to get Flint to treat the highly corrosive water or to urge the city to return to a regional water supplier. The jury began deliberations on July 25th but also took a planned 11-day break before returning Tuesday. Flint’s water became contaminated in 2014 when water pulled from the Flint River wasn’t treated to reduce the corrosive effect on lead pipes. Veolia and LAN say bad decisions by state and local officials caused the crisis.

A second trial is underway for two men accused of conspiring to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. A prosecutor told jurors earlier Wednesday that Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr. wanted to ignite a “second American revolution” in 2020. Fox and Croft are on trial for a second time, four months after a jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict and acquitted two other men. Prosecutors again will present secretly recorded conversations, video, text messages and social media posts, to show how serious Fox and Croft were about kidnapping the governor. Defense attorneys insist there was no real conspiracy and that the defendants were entrapped.
