The U.S. government is preparing to automatically register eligible young men for the Selective Service System later this year. This change would shift the responsibility for draft registration for young men turning 18 away from individuals and place it on federal agencies. The U.S. has not had an active military draft since 1973, and reinstating one would require an act of Congress.
