The Epoch of Incredulity episodes

  • Episode 22 - "Austerity Orgasm"
This week on the Epoch, we're back to the grind! The election's over (most likely) and we still have down-ballot races to discuss, and the absurd amount of money spent on cycle. What will a Biden administration mean for future UK/EU trade deals, and how does the UN feel about USA's human rights record? At last, the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict has come to a close, hopefully. We end the episode sharing our feelings on Biden's victory, and the national celebration that followed.

  • Episode 20 - Gnome Chomsky
It's a somewhat contentious Epoch! We got drama baby! This week is another full deck, as all six of your enlightened hosts stop by for some fun. With many perspectives, comes disagreement. In this episode, we mostly debate the validity and effectiveness of electoral politics, harm reduction, voting for Biden or voting third party, rank-choice-voting, #resistence, the privilege of living in a Blue State, and the ways we can make electoral politics more representative. LE pitches what is probably the plot for the next Hostel film. Scott reviews Aaron Sorkin's very liberal The Trial of the Chicago 7. And, as always, Joe goes off on some current news stories. In the words of Comrade Jesse, "It's impossible to live in Capitalism and not be a harm reductionist."

  • Episode 19 - Talking to Normies | DTPC

Or, Dick-To-Pig Connection. It's an extra stuffed Epoch as are joined by Comrade Will (Scott's brother) from South Shore DSA for an extensive, rather broad, and often humorous discussion on the ways we talk to normies and non-leftist about politics. What is the average person's major concerns? With what ideas are they most eager to agree? What to they outright reject? How can we move them to our side? Does it all just come down to the use of the word, "socialism?" Scott covers the new West Wing special, and finally figures out a bit with 'Dave in a Cave,' LE talks about empathy killing firing simulators, and like always, Joe goes over the week's most important stories.

  • Episode 18 (part 1) - "Death Meat"

It's a looser Epoch this week. We continue to track the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict, Trump's COVID diagnosis, Amy Coney Barrett and the supreme court confirmation hearings, the end of the Massachusetts eviction moratorium, and birds. We also cover the foiled kidnapping plot against Ralph Northam, A Pinkerton shooting a Nazi (win-win), and the demise of movie going. At the end of the episode there is a preview of a patreon exclusive discussion with LE about their struggles and experiences with Other Specified Dissociative Disorder. • Episode 17 - Gender

It all hands on deck for this week's Epoch as the full crew explores the many aspects and nuances of gender. In this awaited discussion we reflect on what gender means to us personally, how we express ourselves because or in spite of how we identify, the way we engage with the assumed normatives of gender, how society treats individuals based on gender assumptions and normatives, and impact left on our mental health and development. And would you believe it, we actually have a real bird story this episode?!

  • Episode 16 - "Bad Man Air"
With the first presidential debate between Trump and Biden on in the background, we open on a light note with a brief discussion of the possibilities the world is sleepwalking into World War 3. Things pick up from there as we cover Trump's taxes, Amy Coney Barrett, NA's services, the awful labor practices of the Disney corporation, topless legislators, and Tulsi's continued slide into full-on fash. Scott has fun playing with his newly constructed soundboard, while LE waits for their weed guy. Jesse says ACAB in Rabid Radlibs. Lastly, we choke on the horrible sci-fi nightmare surreality of commodified air.

  • Episode 15 - Left Wing Melancholia (part 1)
We return to the days of Ol' (the first five episodes) as The Epoch this week is a bit of a rambler. We cover the death of RBG, debate the likelihood the Trump administration tries to fill the seat before the next president is inaugurated, and what, if any, impact, an Amy McGrath Senate would have on the proceedings. We cover the electoral landscape, and highlight a few more leftist victories. We explore the oddities of late stage capitalism; we Pepsi the pain away with Pepsi Driftwell, bow down to the new Russian Christ, and are evicted by UBER, while being berated by Michael's customers. Jesse set his sights on the misconception that the Nordic countries are Communist. Finally, we end with a preview of our interview with Spencer Brown of Boston DSA on Enzo Traverso's book Left-Wing Melancholia, which you can find here: https://www.patreon.com/epicincredulity

  • Episode 14 - Reclaiming Our Time
We continue our journey through the perils of capitalism and the ravages left on our mental health. This week we discuss the effect capitalism has on our perception of time and personal achievement. The alienation and indifference that develops towards our own accomplishments. The emptiness of working your finger to the bone simply just to get by. Plus, bullet journals, rise and grind culture, the lack of sleep, Elon Musk (again), and more!

About The Epoch of Incredulity

From the publisher's feed

Here in the Boston Commune, we interpret the tumultuous churn of modernity through a Marxist lens. Episodes alternate between analyses of current events -- from the hyperlocal to the international -- and narrations of theoretical texts by communists and anti-imperialists the world over. This project was birthed in a mental health working group during the pandemic and continues in true DIY fashion, without any advertisements or monetization (save for a few generous patrons). Hard to believe, we know; for it is, after all, the Epoch of Incredulity.
