  • Episode 12 - Thomas Sankara

    At age 33, Marxist–Leninist, Pan-Africanist, and Communist Revolutionary Thomas Sankara became the President of Republic of Upper Volta. After immediately launching vital social, ecological, and economic programs, he shed Upper Volta's French Colonial past and renamed the country, Burkina Faso ("Land of Incorruptible People"), where he rules from 1983 to 1987. A charismatic yet humble leader, Sankara was a virulent anti-imperialist, and believed in the self-sufficiency of his country, and his people, against western, and capitalist influences. On this Epoch, we discuss Sankara's legacy, his policies and their impact on Burkina Faso, and the Pan-African movement. Before that, we cover the final moments of the Markey/Kennedy primary race, and LE highlights the phenomenon of COVID songs.

    When Bill Clinton was elected president, it was seen as Neoliberalism's final victory against Reaganism and promised, "The End of History." In reality, many of the domestic policies of his administration were not only just soft continuations of what had come before, they also set the precedent for the conditions of inequality and degradation we see in the economic and social spheres today. On this episode of The Epoch of Incredulity, we explore some of these policies -- welfare reform, the repeal of Glass–Steagall, the 1994 crime bill, NAFTA, the 1996 Telecommunications Act, etc. --  and their ramifications today.

The minimum wage has been stagnate for a decade, and overall wages have been stagnant for several decades but productivity has been sky rocketing. Hamilton is a highly entertaining piece of liberal cultural hegemony, but it's a Disney-fied take on the lives of America's founding fathers. The empire continues to rot, and the world is suffering from a sickness, the sickness of Neoliberalism.

Here in the Boston Commune, we interpret the tumultuous churn of modernity through a Marxist lens. Episodes alternate between analyses of current events -- from the hyperlocal to the international -- and narrations of theoretical texts by communists and anti-imperialists the world over. This project was birthed in a mental health working group during the pandemic and continues in true DIY fashion, without any advertisements or monetization (save for a few generous patrons). Hard to believe, we know; for it is, after all, the Epoch of Incredulity.
