The Hidden Cost of Comparing Your Business to Others
Ever found yourself scrolling through social media, seeing another equestrian business celebrating a fully booked diary, a sold-out launch or a growing team, and suddenly questioning how well your own business is doing?
You're certainly not alone. But comparisonitis can do far more than knock your confidence. It can actually start influencing the decisions you make in your business, and not always for the better.
In this episode of the Equine Business Podcast, we're continuing our Business Muckout series and tackling the habit of comparing our businesses to everyone else's.
Because here's the thing. Just because another business looks successful from the outside doesn't mean it's more profitable, more sustainable or even more successful than yours.
We're looking at how comparison can lead you to question your prices, copy somebody else's marketing, chase opportunities that aren't right for you and lose sight of what you're actually trying to build.
In this episode, we explore:
Why a fully booked diary doesn't necessarily mean a profitable business
How comparing yourself to competitors can influence your pricing and marketing decisions
Why copying what's working for somebody else could actually damage your own business
The difference between researching your competitors and allowing them to dictate your decisions
Why bigger doesn't always mean better when it comes to business success
How to turn comparison into useful inspiration rather than self-doubt
Why defining your own version of success is so important
Whether you're a riding instructor, equine therapist, livery yard owner or running an equestrian product business, this episode is a reminder that you don't need to build somebody else's version of success.
You need to build a business that works for you, your customers and the life you want to live.

The Fear of Failure Is Often Just Fear in Disguise
In this solo episode, Jenni Bush kicks off the new Business Muck Out series by unpacking fear of failure, fear of success, and the habit of assuming the worst before anything has even happened. She explains why setbacks are often feedback, not proof that you are bad at business, and why progress gets easier when you stop expecting perfection.
Jenni also shares a real example from her own business launch, showing how disappointing results can still reveal what needs fixing, especially around positioning, timing, and messaging.
This episode is aimed at equine business owners who want a more practical, less emotional way to respond to things not going to plan.

Next time, Jenni explores comparison—and why looking at someone else’s business can leave you wondering whether you’re getting everything wrong.
Introducing the Business Muckout: A New Series for Equestrian EntrepreneursJoin us as we tackle the baggage holding your business back.
Well, hello. It's been a while, hasn't it? The last time I recorded proper episodes for the Equine Business Podcast was back in March. I’ve been eager to bring the podcast back, but I wanted to do something a little different this time.
As the seasons change, I believe there's no better moment to dive back in. Many of you have shared that you listen while mucking out, driving, or juggling the many tasks that come with running an equestrian business. So, I’m excited to introduce a new series designed just for you: The Business Muckout.
This isn't about grabbing your wheelbarrow and fork—though, let’s be honest, that’s a familiar sight. Instead, we’re going to clear out some of the beliefs, habits, and assumptions that might be weighing you down in your business. Over 12 episodes, we’ll tackle one topic at a time, addressing the baggage that keeps us stuck.
Our first topic? The big one: fear of failure. It’s something that can paralyze us, making us question every decision we make. We’ll explore what happens when it feels like everyone else is more successful and why we often feel we’re not good enough.
I have a whole lineup of episodes planned, each filled with insights to help you clear out what’s holding you back. Whether you’re driving to your next client, pushing a wheelbarrow, or finally settling down with a cup of tea, I can’t wait to embark on this journey with you.
And remember, if you know another equestrian business owner who could benefit from a good muckout, send them this podcast. We've all got a few things we could stand to clear out!
Looking forward to tackling this first topic with you—fear of failure and what if it all goes wrong. See you in the next episode!
What is the Business Muckout?Join Me on This Journey
Your equestrian business can be busy, bringing in sales and attracting customers, but does that mean it's making the profit you want?
Turnover and profit aren't the same thing. And making more sales isn't always the answer to improving your financial results.
In this episode of The Equine Business Podcast, we're exploring Profitability, the sixth and final pillar of my GALLOP framework.
If Profitability was one of your lower-scoring areas in the Equine Business Health Check, this episode will help you look at what might be behind that result.
It doesn't automatically mean your business isn't profitable. You might be earning well but want a better understanding of your numbers, more confidence in your pricing or a business model that supports your future goals.
In this episode, we'll explore:
What you actually want your business to give you financially
The difference between sales income, business costs and profit
Whether you know what your business is earning and keeping
How you're setting prices and whether they reflect your costs and goals
Whether your business model can support the income and working hours you want
How beliefs about money, charging and what equestrian customers will pay might influence your decisions
I'll also share an example from my own bridal jewellery business and why comparing your prices with somebody else's isn't always helpful.
We'll use my BAR framework — Beliefs, Actions and Results to look at the financial results you want, the decisions you're making and what might be influencing those decisions.
By the end, you'll have a clearer idea of what you need to investigate before making changes to your pricing or business model.

How much time do you spend looking for information, remembering things or repeating jobs that could be easier?
Getting organised in your equestrian business doesn't have to mean complicated software, colour-coded spreadsheets or perfectly tidy paperwork.
It's about having systems and processes that actually help you run your business.
In this episode of The Equine Business Podcast, we're exploring Organise, the fifth pillar of my GALLOP framework.
If Organise was one of your lower-scoring areas in the Equine Business Health Check, this episode will help you understand what might be behind that score.
Because you don't need to be naturally organised or particularly good with technology to run an efficient business. You need ways of working that suit you and what your business needs.
In this episode, we'll explore:
Whether you can easily find the information you need
How you're keeping track of enquiries, prospects and follow-ups
Whether important tasks are being missed or taking longer than necessary
The recurring jobs and processes that could be made easier
Whether your current systems still suit the size and needs of your business
How perfectionism, procrastination or beliefs about being disorganised might be influencing your actions
Using my BAR framework — Beliefs, Actions and Results, we'll work backwards to understand where your business organisation might need attention.
You might discover that a simple notebook or spreadsheet is doing exactly what you need.
Or you might spot a process that's costing you time, creating unnecessary work or making it harder to deliver the experience you want.
The point isn't to get organised for the sake of it. It's to make running your business easier.

You care about your customers and want them to have a great experience. But how do you know whether that's actually happening?
Good customer service isn't just about being friendly or doing a brilliant job. It's about the whole experience somebody has when they buy from you, book your services and interact with your business.
In this episode of The Equine Business Podcast, we're exploring Look After Your Clients, the fourth pillar of my GALLOP framework.
If this was one of your lower-scoring areas in the Equine Business Health Check, we're going to look at what might be behind that result.
You could already have very happy customers and still have opportunities to make their experience more consistent or develop stronger relationships.
In this episode, we'll explore:
What you actually know about your customers' experiences
What happens from the moment someone buys or books through to delivery and afterwards
Whether your customer journey is clear and consistent
Repeat bookings and purchases, where they make sense for your business
How you're collecting feedback, reviews, testimonials and referrals
Whether your ideas about good customer service are leading you to overdeliver or struggle with boundaries
We'll use my BAR framework — Beliefs, Actions and Results to look at what's happening, what you're doing and what might be influencing those actions.
The aim isn't to give customers more and more of your time for free.
It's to understand how you can create an experience that works well for your customers and for your business.

Your equestrian business might be busy, growing and serving plenty of customers. But is it giving you what you actually want?
Running your own business should mean having some say in the kind of working life you're creating. And that looks different for everybody.
In this episode of The Equine Business Podcast, we're exploring Look After You, the third pillar of my GALLOP framework.
This isn't simply an episode about taking more breaks or working fewer hours.
It's about understanding whether your goals, workload and priorities match the business and life you want to build.
If Look After You was one of your lower-scoring areas in the Equine Business Health Check, this episode will help you investigate why.
In this episode, we'll explore:
What you want your business to look like over the next twelve months
Whether your current workload and working hours suit your goals
The difference between being busy and making progress
How much time you're spending on priorities compared with day-to-day firefighting
Whether your business has the capacity to deliver what you've committed to
How beliefs about hard work, availability and saying no might be influencing the way you run your business
Using my BAR framework — Beliefs, Actions and Results, we'll look at the results you want, the actions you're taking and what might be behind them.
You might find that your workload is a conscious choice that works well for you. Or you might identify something about your priorities, capacity or business model that deserves a closer look.

You're getting interest in your equestrian business, but what actually happens when somebody is ready to buy or book?
Sales isn't just about persuading people to spend money. It's about making it easy for the right customers to take the next step, communicating the value of what you offer and following up when appropriate.
In this episode of The Equine Business Podcast, we're looking at Actions to Sell, the second pillar of my GALLOP framework.
If this was one of your lower-scoring areas in the Equine Business Health Check, we're going to explore what might be influencing your sales results.
That doesn't mean you're bad at selling. You might already have a good sales process and simply want to improve one part of it.
In this episode, we'll explore:
What happens to enquiries and expressions of interest in your business
How to tell the difference between getting interest and converting suitable customers
Whether people can easily understand how to buy or book with you
How often you're actively inviting people to take the next step
What happens when someone enquires, including your approach to following up
Whether beliefs about being pushy, rejection or talking about money are influencing your actions
We'll work backwards through my BAR framework — Beliefs, Actions and Results to understand what's happening before deciding what needs to change.
You might discover something about your sales process, your offer, your marketing or simply the way you're keeping track of enquiries.
The aim is to identify what actually needs your attention.

Are you getting the results you want from your equestrian business marketing?
Whether you're posting regularly, trying to reach more people or wondering if you're spending your marketing time in the right places, it's worth looking beyond followers, likes and views.
In this episode of The Equine Business Podcast, we're exploring Get Seen, the first pillar of my GALLOP framework.
If you've completed the Equine Business Health Check and Get Seen is one of your lower-scoring areas, this episode will help you understand what might be behind that result.
Because a lower score doesn't necessarily mean your marketing isn't working. You might already be doing plenty of things well. We just want to understand where there's room to improve.
In this episode, we'll explore:
What you actually want your marketing to achieve, beyond social media engagement
How to look at the evidence, including enquiries, bookings and the people you're reaching
The difference between the marketing you've planned and what you're actually doing
Whether your positioning makes it clear who you help, what you offer and why someone should choose you
How beliefs about visibility, confidence or getting things wrong might be influencing your actions
We'll use my BAR framework — Beliefs, Actions and Results — working backwards to help you identify what deserves a closer look.
By the end, you'll have a clearer idea of which part of your marketing you want to investigate before making changes.
