  • How do you know when it's time to change your story?

I’m spreading a simple message. If things in your life change, it’s ok to change your story. In fact, you should change your story. Or else things will probably start getting a little weird.

Here are four reasons why it might be time to change your story:

    1. Your audience has substantially changed
    2. Your story is no longer relevant to who you are now and the reasons you do what you do
    3. You’ve experienced a life event which has taught you new things, shifted your purpose or made you view the world differently.
    4. Life has naturally evolved and you haven’t had time to catch up.
    5. So, if you don’t recognise yourself on your website or your social media, now is the time to do something about it.

    6. We shall accept nothing less than an equal voice.

Only 22% of top-rated podcast shows have female hosts. Depressing isn’t it?

We often think we’re just one tiny voice, so why does it matter if we don’t speak up. But just imagine if everyone thought like that! If sharing your story scares you, just think of the wider good it could be doing. The women that you could be inspiring, giving hope to, or making them feel less alone.

In this episode I empower you to stop feeling guilty for taking up space and instead, proactively carve out a unique place for your voice to be heard and celebrated.

For women with something to say, The Everyday Storyteller is a podcast about making your voice matter, one day at a time.

    7. Follow the leader, leader, leader.

“Leaders lead by telling stories that give others permission to lead, not follow.” - Michael Margolis

In this episode we explore the importance of storytelling in leadership and how your story can help give others permission to lead.

Pssst - even if you don’t see yourself as a 'leader' don’t skip this episode. Being a leader isn’t just about managing a team; you might be a thought-leader, someone leading by example or simply leading that tightly oiled ship you call family (yeah right!).

Whatever type of leader you are, or even if you’re not sure if you are a leader (you are!), do listen.

    8. Sticks and stones can break my bones...

How many of you remember the saying ‘sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me’? As a child I totally accepted it - the standardised retort for playground bullies. But as a grown up, I’ve really started to question it.

In this episode, I discuss the power words have to make people feel really great, or really crap. And share ideas on how you can get ahead of yourself when thinking what words to use in your stories and content.

    9. Feel the (storytelling) fear and do it anyway.

Feel the (storytelling) fear and do it anyway

There will always be people that don’t like what you have to say. And that’s fine. They’re not ‘your people’, they will probably never buy from you or buy into you.

In this episode I’ll show you how to stop worrying about trying to please the wrong people and how to engage positively with the right people through creating stories that speak directly to them and what they need.

Primary message? Be brave. Be bold. And do it all anyway.

    10. Why work in progress is better than no progress at all.

One of the key lessons I’ve learned so far with running a business, even launching this podcast, is that if you wait around for perfection, it will never happen.

In this episode, I explore the concept of MVP - Most Viable Product and how this can help you get more stories out into the world before it’s too late.

I also set you the challenge to hit the ‘post’ button on a story you’ve created, without spending hours overthinking and editing it!

So, have a listen, write your story and tag #theeverydaystoryteller so I can read it too.

    11. Why failure stories matter and how to use yours to build trust.

Hands up who’s cynical when it comes to all those glamorous rags to riches tales we see on social media yet still often compare your own story to them?

      Yep. Me too.

But don’t worry. In this episode I chat all about why sharing failure stories can be even more powerful when it comes to creating connections with your audience and fostering trusted relationships.

Want to get involved? I’ve also set a challenge for you to write 2-3 paragraphs about a time when things didn’t quite go your way and how it made you feel. If you tag #theeverystoryteller, I’ll share them too.

    12. Can imposter syndrome put a damper on your storytelling or could it actually help you?
Whichever way you look at it, Imposter Syndrome is real and probably isn’t ever going to go away completely. But there are a few things you can do about - and this is so important when it comes to being a better storyteller.
In this episode, I share my story about speaking at a conference in front of 200 women and what this experience taught me about tapping into collective fears to engage my audience.
Plus I share two things you can do if you feel imposter syndrome creeping in when talking in public.

    13. Revealing the woman behind the curtain.

One of the trickiest things, once you’ve found your voice, is knowing what to talk about. So if you’re after some quick inspiration, listen on.

In the last episode (Sharing. Or over sharing?), I mused about how much is too much when it comes to sharing publicly.

In this episode, I’m going to share a few ideas for personal stories that shouldn’t have you running for the hills.

And don’t forget to tag #TheEverydayStoryteller in any stories you post on social media so I can read and share them.

    14. Sharing. Or oversharing?

At least once a week I get ask the question - “how much personal stuff should I talk about when telling stories.”?

Truth is, there is no wrong or right answer but in this episode, I’ll help you set your own boundaries and see how sharing a little more of ‘you’ can help you develop deeper connections and engagement with your audience.

Check out the next episode (Revealing the woman behind the curtain) for five ideas for stories you can tell to bring out your personal side, without revealing all.
